Serena Williams Wins 19th Grand Slam Title at Australian Open

Serena Williams won her 19th Grand Slam title this weekend when she defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 7-5 (5) at the Australian Open.

At 33, Serena became the oldest woman in the Open era to win the tournament and now ranks second among winners of Grand Slam titles in the Open era, trailing only Steffi Graf who captured 22 Grand Slam titles during her impressive career.

After winning, Serena took to the court to give her trophy acceptance speech, saying the following:

Standing here with 19 championships is something I never thought would happen. I went on the court with a ball and a racket and a hope. It’s inspiring for those of you out there who want to be something or for whatever you want to do when you grow up. You never know who you’re going to inspire; so I’m so honored.

Fun fact: Maria Sharapova hasn’t won against Serena in more than 11 years.

Here’s to hoping Serena catches and surpasses Steffi Graf.

Congratulations, Serena!
