Say What Now? Former 911 Operator Sentenced to 10 Days in Jail for Hanging Up on Thousands of Callers Because She Didn’t Feel Like Talking

A former Houston 911 operator was found guilty of hanging up on thousands of people calling to ask for emergency assistance.

Crenshanda Williams this week was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 18 months of probation for interfering with emergency telephone calls — which is a misdemeanor.

via NYDN:

The 44-year-old Texas woman spent a year and a half taking — and ignoring — 911 calls at the Houston Emergency Center. She was caught in 2016 after a supervisor noticed a surprising amount of quick phone calls on her line.

The District Attorney’s office said there is a recording system in place that tracks whether it is the operator or the caller who disconnects. It showed thousands of calls shorter than 20 seconds, all a result of Williams hanging up.

When police questioned her about the hang-ups during the summer of 2016, she told officers “that she often hangs up on calls that have not been connected because she did not want to talk to them at that time.”

Prosecutors said the calls Williams received ranged from reports of speeding vehicles to homicides.

In one March 2016 recording, Williams can be heard hanging up on Hau Li, who phoned in after hearing shots fired at a convenience store. Li attempted to call back, but the store manager was killed before authorities arrived on the scene.

In another March incident, a security guard phoned in to report a pair of reckless drivers, racing at high speeds. Williams hung up before the guard could give his name, according to Click2Houston.

“Ain’t nobody got time for this,” she can be heard saying in the recording of the call. “For real.”
