We were all excited when the controversial animated series The Boondocks announced its return to television on April 21, but after learning the show will continue without series & comic creator Aaron McGruder, we’re a little concerned.
How does a show continue without the man who created it and the person who was integral to the show’s overall creative direction?
A press release from Sony Pictures Television, which produces the series, noted that the new season “was produced without the involvement of Aaron McGruder, when a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined.”
Representatives for McGruder could not be reached for comment — which is a odd, considering McGruder has always vigorously protected and defended his work and the Boondocks characters.
Thankfully, reprising the role as the voices of Huey and Riley is Regina King, and John Witherspoon is returning as the voice of Robert “Granddad” Freeman.
We’ll have to tune in for the fourth and final season this April to see how McGruder’s absence truly affects the show.
