Rosario Dawson Reveals She Was Raped and Molested as a Child

Rosario Dawson revealed publicly that she, too, is a victim of sexual assault.

Her revelation came during a conversation in which she talked about how what she experienced as a child has shaped her view of the world today.

“I was raped and molested as a child, so for me, the world was like that since I was a child,” Dawson said in a new episode of the Morado Lens podcast.

“So when I saw it in the workplace, it wasn’t foreign to me,” she continued. “It was like, well, that even happens within family. It happens with people that are supposed to take care of you when you’re a child.”

Dawson, 38, has regularly tweeted or retweeted posts about the #MeToo and Time’s Up initiatives, which aim to fight sexual harassment and assault while giving a voice to those who previously didn’t have a platform to speak up.

Last Saturday, she retweeted a number of posts about the Women’s Marches taking place in multiple cities and shared a photo of herself with marchers holding up empowering signs.

The actress said during her appearance on the podcast that she’s encouraged that there’s a brighter future on the horizon now that so many women have bravely come forward with their stories about sexual misconduct.

“Now we’re in a place where it’s finally like, ‘No, we don’t have to keep passing this on. This is archaic and terrible and destructive. Let’s look at it,’” Dawson told hosts Nathalie Farfan and Cindy Rodriguez during their Jan. 17 conversation. “It’s beautiful. I’m so ready for this moment.”

While the #MeToo movement won’t end sexual assault overnight, it IS causing a lot of much-needed conversation to take place.
