‘Django Unchained’ Actress Daniele Watts Sentenced to Community Service After Judge Decides Court-Ordered Apology Was Insincere

‘Django Unchained’ actress Daniele Watts has been ordered to perform community service after a judge refused to accept her court-ordered apologies to Los Angeles police she previously accused of racial profiling.

She and her boyfriend pleaded no contest to disturbing the peace charges stemming from their arrest last fall and the court said they had to apologize to the LAPD. Three months later, Daniele and her boyfriend gave the judge an apology letter that wasn’t much of an apology at all.

In the letter, the couple said the sergeant involved in the encounter provoked her, describing him as sarcastic and dismissive. She signed her name with a heart, but didn’t offer a direct apology.

“Hopefully you can forgive the fact that my heightened emotions disturbed what might have otherwise been a carefree stop on your way to a nice cup of coffee,” she wrote.

The couple was told to try again. They wrote a new letter in which Daniele apologized “for my lack of emotional control” and asked for forgiveness.

The judge wasn’t here for it and called the apologies “insincere and passive aggressive.” She sentenced the couple Wednesday to 15 days of community labor and two years of probation, the city attorney’s office said.
