Ava DuVernay Reportedly Tapped to Direct Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’, Set to Become the First Woman to Direct a Marvel Film

This is a huge deal.

According to a Marvel Cinematic Universe exclusive, Marvel Studios has tapped Selma‘s Ava DuVernay to direct its upcoming Black Panther film.

Black Panther is the first black superhero in American comics, and the film will mark the first time Marvel has brought a black superhero to the big screen. Get on Up‘s Chadwick Boseman is set to portray Black Panther in the feature film.

A woman, let alone a black woman, has never directed a Marvel film, and, if true, Ava is set to become the first after Patty Jenkins backed out of an opportunity to direct Thor: The Dark World. According to reports, Marvel had been courting Ava for some time.

Ava has yet to confirm the news, but we’d be on the lookout for an official announcement soon.
