So Sad: Marlins Pitcher Jose Fernandez Dead After Boating Accident in Miami

Miami Marlins pitcher, Jose Fernandez, was killed over the weekend in a tragic boating accident near Miami Beach.

He was 24-years-old.

via TMZ:

Coast Guards found Fernandez’ body along with two others early Sunday morning near Miami Beach near the 32-foot vessel, which was overturned. 

Two of the bodies were found floating on top of the water, and one was submerged.

The Marlins released a statement saying,  “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at a very difficult time.”

Their Sunday afternoon game against the Atlanta Braves has been canceled out of respect.

Fernandez was born in Cuba and tried 3 times to defect to the U.S. … he was caught twice and served prison time.  He also saved his mother’s life after she fell out of the boat during one attempt.

Fernandez successfully defected in 2008. He was named the NL’s Rookie of the Year two years later.
