We waited to catch a glimpse of Rihanna on the Grammys red carpet, but we figured she decided to skip the carpet and go straight to the ceremony.

According to a new report from TMZ, she not only skipped the red carpet — but she straight up canceled her scheduled performance for the evening altogether!

Sources connected to the production tell us, Rihanna has been struggling with bronchitis and is on meds. We’re told a doctor on site recommended that she pull the plug on the performance because it could permanently damage her vocal cords.

Our sources say Rihanna wanted to perform but reluctantly decided she had to listen to her doctors.  She left Staple’s and is going home.

She was going to sing “Kiss It Better.”  She even rehearsed twice but in the end the show just could not go on.

This is unfortunate. Rih’s performance was one of the few we were actually looking forward to seeing this evening.

Update: Rihanna’s rep has released the following statement:

“Based on Rihanna‘s examination, after Grammy rehearsal today, Rihanna‘s doctor put her on vocal rest for 48-hours because she was at risk of hemorrhaging her vocal chords,” her rep told us in a statement. The antibiotics she has been on for 3-days did not kill the infection adequately therefore she cannot perform safely.”
