A former New Jersey mail carrier tried using the addresses of empty homes to smuggle cocaine from Puerto Rico.

Amanda Cruz, 22, was arrested this week and booked with first degree narcotics violations, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office told local media.
Prosecutors said Cruz was a relatively new hire at a Short Hills, N.J., post office in June 2016 when she struck up a drug smuggling arrangement.
The Newark resident would look for addresses whose residents had stopped mail deliveries while they were on vacation, officials said.
“She figured out who put their mail on hold,” assistant prosecutor Romesh Sukhdeo told The Record. “She was having drugs sent to those addresses, and a third party would make the pickup.”
The smuggling scheme fell through, however, when two residents were home.
The each opened their mysterious packages to find about a kilogram of cocaine — valued at thousands of dollars, Sukhdeo told The Record.
The local police department and U.S. Postal Service investigated the packages — eventually arresting Cruz.
She was charged with two counts of first degree possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
