Say What Now? Lee Daniels Says He Made the ‘Star’ Lead Character White Because ‘the Country Needed to Heal’ & He Refuses to ‘Embrace’ Racism [Video]

Lee Daniels says that me made the lead character of his new Fox drama, ‘Star,’ a white girl because he felt like ‘the country needed to heal.’

We don’t really know how a white lead character in a primetime television drama is supposed to ‘heal’ the country — do you?

via The Wrap:

During an appearance on the syndicated daytime talk show “The Real” on Tuesday, the producer said that he believes that the U.S. is in the midst of “a civil war.”

“I thought that it was important to address race relations in America,” Daniels said. “We are, truly I believe, in a civil war. And I think that when we understand that we’re all one that [we will] then understand America. And America is still to be understood by us.”

Set in the hip-hop haven of Atlanta, “Star” follows three young women (Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady) who form a musical act and navigate the cutthroat business on their way to success. The cast also includes Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt.

“I think that this white girl is so fabulous that black people will embrace her, and white people will embrace her,” Daniels said of Demorest’s character.

“If I embraced it, it then it became real. And if it became real, then I would be an angry black man,” he said.

So — a ‘fabulous’ white girl will help us heal race relations in this country? Good to know.

  1. Well… I’ll give it a chance

  2. Ni99a just say that she’s so fabulous black people will accept her. These ni99as. Black men clearly and blatantly tell black women white is better and ok. Yet for them it’s black men are superior and the best. These black men can kiss my black ass. And his show. Guaranteed to flop.

    • Right! Black men are the ones running and sniffing behind white women, so them embracing the lead won’t be anything new. My issue is, they don’t need any embracing. They are considered the crème de la crème in America, put on a pedestal by ALL (definitely are men), so in short, do they really need, yet, another platform? Lee Daniels truly makes me sick!!!

  3. Safe to say I can’t stand this man

  4. Trump logic if what BSCOTT is saying about the lead being white is true.

  5. so the white girl is healing us all from what exactly? lee’s a queen, bye lee. no one wants to watch this and empire has sucked since season 1.

  6. Rolling my eyes so hard I may induce a seizure. I can’t.

  7. I can’t with him. He really is delusional. Did he say he refuses to accept the reality that racism is real?! So, what planet does he live on? Rather, he is in the Hollyweird Bubble!

  8. If a White woman playing the lead role in a tv show or movies is the cure for racism why is there still racism since 99% of roles for leading ladies are portrayed by White women?

Wow that was so contradictory to say. We have always accepted “White Women” so this country needs to heal because we still need to praise “White Women?” Ok Bozo!

  10. wouldn’t be where I was if I embraced racism. If I embraced it, then it became real. And if it became real, I would be an angry black man,” he said.

So racism isn’t real, I guess Mr Daniels is one of those Blacks who explains away the racism he faces daily. I’d also bet he blames Blacks for White people being racist towards us all. His type of Black is not new to Black people. I knew dude had a problem with Black folks (particularly Black women) when he made the comment about visiting GMHC in NYC and thinking it was a “welfare office” because of all the Black women he said he saw there. I’m not suprised by his statement at all, nor do I watch his work. I cannot understand anyone who deny their own reality. No one suggest embracing racism but it cannot be denied .

  11. Black writers know what really happened (Because we hear it all the time whenever we present a Black story). The powers that be reviewed his script and thought it was great. And then they asked him, “can you make the lead Black character white? And in order to please the powers that be,so that his project will be green lit he agreed, and came up with this bull shirt story about not embracing racism, when in fact racism has embraced him with a convoluted racialized image meant to be acceptable to a wider white audience..

    • Ha! Right! And the setting is Atlanta. Atlanta is, what, 90% African American, soooooo this lead character still needs to be white? Oh O.K. That setting for that platform is NOT realistic.

  12. Miss hunty embrace it or not, its real
