Jay-Z Files a Trademark for 'Jaybo' From 'The Story of O.J.'

Jay-Z is gunning for the rights to Jaybo, the lead animated character from his ‘The Story of O.J.’ music video.

via TMZ:

Hova’s company, S. Carter Enterprises, just filed docs to trademark the animated character, “Jaybo.” The plan is to plaster the little guy on T-shirts, sweaters, hats, blankets, shams, dinnerware, mugs, cocktail shakers and thermal containers.

Interesting move to commercialize Jaybo, since it’s a playoff of Sambo — the main character from an 1899 children’s book that’s widely held to be racist due to the illustrations.

The thing about putting Jaybo on merchandise is that any one can buy it. We’re not sure if we want to see a bunch of white Jay-Z fans out here wearing a traditionally racist caricature on hats and shirts.

Hopefully it’s more of a protective trademark.
