Say What Now? A White-Owned Texas Restaurant Observed MLK Day With a Fried Chicken and Watermelon Special

A Texas restaurant is no doubt feeling the sting after being accused of racism for its offensive lunch special commemorating MLK Day.

On Monday, Sabrina Pyle, owner of Azle Café, advertised a fried chicken special on her restaurant’s Facebook page. The post read: “Happy MLK Day guys! Come have some chicken & waffles w/a side of watermelon.”

The post was swiftly removed, but the damage had already been done. Angry phone calls began pouring in, and online reviews trashed the restaurant.

While Sabrina originally thought the fried chicken special was an “incredible, ingenious idea,” she now realizes she made a huge mistake.

Per WFAA:

“I wasn’t thinking about the historical (context),” she said. “I was thinking, we have margaritas and tacos on Cinco de Mayo, so, let’s have some fun with Martin Luther King Day.”

Sabrina maintains that she is “by far not racist.”
