‘Expendables 2’ Outshines ‘Sparkle’ at Weekend Box Office

The Expendables 2 won the weekend box office raking in $28.8 million. Not only did it beat out The Bourne Legacy and ParaNorman, but the action-thriller took opening week glory from Whitney Houston’s last film, Sparkle. Don’t expect Sylvester Stallone & co. to run out of steam anytime soon. The Expendables 2 is expected to have a lengthy box-office run.

“We think we’ll have a great run,” Lionsgate executive vice president of distribution David Spitz told The Hollywood Reporterin regards to The Expendables‘ performance. “Older audiences don’t rush out to the cinema on opening weekend.”

The Bourne Legacy came in second place with $17 million and the family friendly ParaNorman rounded out the top three with $14 million.

The biggest disappointment of the weekend was Sparkle. Despite having generally positive reviews, the Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston led film came in at No. 5 with $12 million.
