Aretha Franklin ‘Cracked Up Laughing’ Over Beyonce Lip-Syncing Controversy

Read below what an apparently amused Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, had to say about the Beyonce lip-sync controversy.

Aretha Franklin wowed the crowds at President Obama’s first inauguration four years ago, belting out “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” on a bitterly cold Washington, D.C., day.

Four years later it was Beyonce whose performance drew initial raves at Obama’s second inauguration, but with the news that she may have lip-synched her rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” the Queen of Soul weighed in on the controversy, noting that she still thinks Beyonce “did a beautiful job.”

“But, when I heard the news this evening that she was pre-recorded I really laughed. I thought it was funny because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers that is just not good singing weather,” Franklin told ABC News in an interview. In fact, the weather was even colder than that Monday, around 40 degrees.

“When I heard that I just really cracked up. I thought it was really funny, but she did a beautiful job with the pre-record … next time I’ll probably do the same.”

Of course, in her inauguration performance in 2009, she sang it live because, she says, “I wanted to give people the real thing and pre-recording never crossed my mind.”

She did lament that she wished she hadn’t had to wait so long in the cold four years ago, saying that if she hadn’t, her performance — which had the crowd going wild — would have been even better. “Had I not had to sit that long, I had to sit for 45 or 30 minutes and it was much colder, it was in the 20s,” Franklin said, of the performance where both her voice and her hat got noticed.

“I just wished I could have sung the moment I got there,” she said. “If I could have walked on immediately and sung it wouldn’t have affected my voice the way it did.”

The 70 year-old music legend did admit to lip synching once when she performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the Detroit Pistons took on the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 5 of the NBA Finals in June of 2004.

So, does she think it’s wrong what The Queen Bey did?

“I think it’s optional really, it’s up to the artist,” Franklin said. “In 2009, I wanted everything to be live and on the real side for the moment as it actually happened. Those were my feelings for my performance, but having come face to face with 28, 22 degrees I am not surprised she pre-recorded. She wanted her performance to be what she wanted to be and she realized it wasn’t going to be the way she wanted it to be or she was going to be running a risk. That’s probably why she pre-recorded exactly how she wanted it to be heard.”

Franklin added that Kelly Clarkson, who did sing live, and also sang “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” was “magnificent” as well.

“I enjoyed every minute,” Franklin said, adding that she “loved” Clarkson’s arrangement of the song.

Franklin said she enjoyed James Taylor’s performance and was quite emotional throughout the entire ceremony.

“From the beginning to the end, I was crying throughout the ceremony at different times,” Franklin said. “Looking at the history of the president coming to the point he came to, looking to where it came from the Civil Rights movement to yesterday and I think most of the country was crying.”

She said she wasn’t more moved than four years ago when Obama became the first African-American president, but noted that the experience is very different watching it from home.

“It’s one thing to be there to perform and another to be able to sit at home and watch it on TV, it’s a completely different perspective,” she said.

The problem with Beyonce is she likes the negativity linked to her name and the media likes that coz they get the buzz. she doesnt address rumours not sure if she has a publicist if so that publicist is very lucky getting paid for nothing I am not a fan i hate her phony ways but i have watched the video more than 10times she did sing live i can see her throat veins strained when she was hitting the notes i dont like this woman but if you check the videos you can tell that she sang live my question is why does she ignore but then the answer is she likes the negativity not sure if she realise that she will mostly be known for the bad things not her real talent which is a shame coz most people believe what they hear on news, newspapers or radio

how does she like the negativity.??? because she doesn’t feed into the negativity.?? I’m not so much a fan but she really does have a awesome voice, dynamic stage presence & represents very well… apparently you knw her very well to determine she’s phony, I don’t know her personally so I can’t justify anything “personally” about her… but I think she doesn’t address “rumors” because they are “rumors”… if it’s not true why feed into the bull, but hey, I don’t know her personally to assume or say. My question is why not ignore.? you just said yourself, its negativity… why feed into negativity, is my question to you.?

she has nothing to lose by addressing the rumours straight away becoz she ignores thats the reason why everything she does since her fke pregnancy issue she has to justify everything she does people question coz they believe that she is fake if she could address rumours straight away people will not question her credibility. in this case of lip sync if she didnt why cant she prove this for the sake of her stans not surprised coz she doesnt really care much abt her stans but abt her perfectionist thats the reason she chose to lip synch when the other guys opt to sing live I dont blame Arethat for laughing at her she is a disgrace she seem to be so supportive of the POTUS and embarrasing the POTUS like this its a shame

People need a life, because they enjoy other peoples life more. Who loves negativity. Lol. We take these blogs to seriously. Fake Pregnancy, are we still talking about that after it’s been debunked time after time. I don’t see the big deal with Beyonce. Yes, she’s a great performer and I giver her that but between the fans and hater, they have some serious mental issues…..especially the haters…As for addressing rumors, what’s the point of addressing rumors, it will only feed the fire. It was a slow news cycle. Now the media have the Hilary Clinton showdown in Congress Beyonce so called scandal is over. Whitney Houston, the best rendition of the National Anthem, she was lip syncing …

I really don’t understand how there are so many other entertainers that lip sync, sing over pre-recorded tracks during EVERY ONE of their performances… & don’t get so much hate & criticism… but when it comes to Bey (who the media has put on such a high pedestal) the world goes crazy, it’s like they expect her to be sooooo perfect.! Entertainers sing over pre-recorded tracks everyday… the fact is, yes, she WAS singing live w/ the help of a pre-recorded track.! She opted to use a pre-recording last minute, my biggest “guess” (understand i’m not assuming or saying wht she did cause i wasnt there or didn’t tlk to her personally like some of you think ya’ll do) is she’s a perfectionist, she wants her work to be perfect, also she knows her voice, she probably didn’t want to make any mistakes or errors & come off as close to perfect, cause she is who she is, even tho she sang live & did a damn good job, she opted to sing over the track, get over it… it happens.!!!
