According to several of our sources rapper Roderick Anthony Burton II (born November 25, 1987) better known by his stage name Dolla, was fatally shot at the entrance to the Beverly Center mall this afternoon, and police were searching for two suspects. Our sources close to the situation believe the shooting stemmed from an initial altercation in Atlanta, GA. No official word has been confirmed on the motive.

The shooting occurred just after 3 p.m. at the La Cienega Boulevard entrance to the popular Westside shopping center. All entrances and exits to the popular Westside shopping mall were sealed off as police swarmed the scene. LAPD officials said that officers were sent to the mall on a report of a group fight, possibly involving a knife. LAPD Sgt. Ronnie Crump said two suspects ran in the direction of Beverly Hills. At a Chipotle restaurant in the mall, several people were eating when the shots rang out. “The customers were yelling ‘close the store, close the store, because somebody is shooting,’ ” said Elsa Hernandez, general manager of the restaurant. An employee who was behind the restaurant, near the mall’s valet parking service, saw the tail end of the dispute, Hernandez said. “He saw a lady … shooting a handgun,” Hernandez said. latimes.com

LA Mill Coffee is one impressive “looking” hybrid restaurant and coffee house. Originally known for it’s high-end black-bean delights, this year the venue partnered up with a proper chef and expanded into the breakfast and lunch arena. But… if LA Mill were a radio show I’d have to call it “Morning Becomes Too Eclectic” for anybody to actually eat.

We here at Love B. Scott try to review restaurants and events that we think are fantastic recommendations, but this spot was so over the top odd and annoying we had to “ring the alarm” of concern. This is the kind of restaurant non-Californians mock us for. Tiny, fussy plates of food involving intimidating ingredients. And the ironic part is their mission statement is to provide simple, straight-forward fare.

We started with coffee. Wait, not “coffee”, but an orange infused cappuccino with textured (read: steamed) milk garnished with cacao. It’s the new kid in town, and The Waffle is trying to stay in the game. We decided to pay a visit to this much-hyped late night spot to see what all the fuss was about. Tecate Mojito: Muddle six sprigs of fresh mint, 4 tsp. of sugar syrup and 2 tsp. of lime juice in the bottom of a tall glass. Add 2 Tbsp. of light rum (optional) and stir. Pour 12 oz. of chilled Tecate Light into the glass and enjoy!

Nueva Cuba: Pour 6 oz. of Coca-Cola into the bottom of a cold glass, followed by 6 oz. of Tecate Light. Squeeze a lime slice into the mix and drink up!

Bloody Bull Lager: Mix 2 tsp. of lime juice, ½ c. of spicy tomato juice and 2 Tbsp. of vodka (optional) in a glass. Pour 12 oz. of Tecate Light, and top it off with a crisp celery stalk!

Citrus Explosion: Pour 6 oz of citrus soda and 6 oz of Tecate Light into the bottom of the glass. Stir well and enjoy!

Try one or two of these suggestions, and you’ll definitely find that there’s more to the Superbowl than chips and dip!

The most intriguing thing about fusion food is that it brings together complete opposites that somehow manage to complement each other naturally. Asia de Cuba’s menu takes the flavors of Latin food with Asian cuisine to create various plates that open your mind and tingle your taste buds. Sweet and spicy, fruity and savory, crisp and creamy—these are just a few of the tastes and textures that make up the menu. A new world awaits…on your plate.

If atmosphere is a deciding factor when it comes to dining, then Asia de Cuba should be on your list for that reason alone. The vibrancy of the scene starkly contrasts with the colorful menu because the entire restaurant is lacking color. In fact, the interior is a monochromatic setting of bright white and creamy beiges designed by Philippe Starck. The outside patio with its lighted trellis, oversized terra cotta pots overflowing with trees and vines and views overlooking the city adds a splash of color to any outdoor dining or cocktails. The design is very much in line with the remainder of the Mondrian Hotel, which stands out from other Sunset hotels with its sleek, sophisticated interior. The restaurant is just a matching addition.

Serving breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner, Asia de Cuba dishes it out from early morning to late night. The prices may run high, but the presentation and quality of food make it worth the price. Breakfast, lunch and brunch are individually plated, but the dinner items are meant to be shared. Plates are served family-style, so everyone can fill their plate with whatever is on the table. The evening specialties include calamari salad with bananas and sesame orange dressing, spiced pork spare ribs with corn and avocado salad, hoisin roasted duck with papaya, cuban barbecue chicken with coconut sticky rice and the renowned miso cured butterfish, which is cured for at least four days and served with tempura shisito peppers. The nightlife guide is a growing resource of reviews for select venues that we visit often and recommend regularly. If it’s on the list, then we love it and think you will too!

Clubbing in Hollywood these days revolves around dealing with over-priced car scratching valet drivers, bribing bouncers and VIP lists that are no more exclusive than the yellow pages. We are constantly checking out new places and things to do around Los Angeles that will make your night out an experience worth talking about at work the next day.

This week: The Woods, Spanish Kitchen and Malediction Society.

West LA is such an eclectic hole full of eateries. Insert 3 Square Cafe & Bakery and Rockenwagner. It’s actually two different places—3 Square holding it down in Venice and Rockenwagner Bakery located in Marvista. Both are the creations of Hans Rockenwagner, a renowned chef and restauranteur with a worldwide experience that spans from Germany, France and Switzerland and of course Los Angeles starting in 1984.

With such an interesting background, we had to give the Rockenwagner trifecta a try starting with 3 Square. It’s called 3 Square because it offers what it considers the obvious–”3 square” meals, each day. The menu is intriguing. Breakfast is only offered during the week from 8:00 am-11:30 am, but you can get your fill of authentic muesli with cream and berries, apple pancakes, vegetable frittatas, ham and cheese paninis or the day’s featured omelet. Of course there are various early morning sides like assorted breads and pastries from the bakery, smoked bacon, and their infamous pretzel rolls. Lunch picks up from 11:30 until 3:00 pm, and the menu offers a selection of gazpacho, calamari, vegetables with couscous, vegetable burgers, salads and number of sandwiches and other entrees such as salmon “Monte Cristo”. Sides include green salads with a housemade, creamy dressing, mixed berries, French fries, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try the avocado fries. Of course you can’t forget a midday dessert. Try the citrus pound cake or the chocolate caramel tart. Finally, around 5:00 pm, there’s dinner. Start off your meal with avocado fries or spinach-ricotta ravioli. For the main course, there’s authentic German spatzle, pecan-crusted chicken breast, mini burgers, grilled salmon steak or halibut and the well known pretzel burger.

For some reason, there’s something about a restaurant’s potential to serve a nice brunch that always stands out. At 3 Square, you’ll find it every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Toast to the lovely weather with a mimosa or bellini over a breakfast of huevos rancheros, chicken-hazelnut salad or veal sausage and eggs. For your side, take your pick of the sauteed potatoes or fresh breads served with homemade jam and Plugra butter—a richer, creamier European-style butter. The breads and pastries are available at the adjacent bakery, which stays open from 7:00 am-6:00 pm, so after breakfast, you can take a bag of sweet treats home.

3 Square carries the entire line of pastries from Rockenwagner Bakery located just a couple of miles away. If you’ve ever wondered what the flavor of German or Austrian pastries could be like, it’s worth it to give Rockenwagner a try. There’s the triberry scone, Rudolf Steiner bread (a specialty multigrain bread), lemon cherry cookies, linzer cookies and the ever popular pretzel roll in addition to a variety of breads, cakes, muffins and croissants. Ever heard of a berliner? It’s their speciality version of the traditional German doughnut, and you can only get them from Rockenwagner on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Inside the fried dough, you’ll find raspberry jam, and outside, it’s covered in cinnamon and sugar. How can you go wrong with cinnamon and sugar.

With all of this food, you need a way to wash it down. Try their selection of waters and teas from around the world along with a variety of lemonades and teas that you wouldn’t find just anywhere. They also carry the Austrian Julius Meinl line of coffees, teas and espressos. It’s not your average venti americano from Starbucks.

It’s not often that Angelenos can get a taste of Germany or Australia by the sunny beach. But 3 Square Cafe and Rockenwagner Bakery offer just that, right over the hill. By offering you those “3 square” meals, you should have plenty of opportunities to try breakfast, lunch and dinner (but don’t forget brunch!). As for Rockenwagner…well, how many times can you say you’ve had a true berliner?

Driving up and down the length of Melrose Avenue, you’ll find an abundance of restaurants for a midday brunch or early evening dinner. So which do you choose? Just between Martel and Fuller Avenues, there’s Blu Jam Cafe. Years ago, it was an underground jazz and blues club, and patrons would have to enter secretly to hear musicians play. Hence the name: Blu Jam. There is plenty of outdoor seating for those who like to watch the crowds go by on the weekend, but for those who prefer the coverage of four walls, there are just enough tables inside to make it feel cozy but not claustrophobic.

Having a dinner party or brunch? Ask for the private table behind the curtain for a little seclusion. The cafe’s art deco feel adds to its atmosphere. Fanastical paintings (some for sale) cover the half-brickface walls, providing a little extra conversation piece during your stay. High-backed wooden chairs flank intimately close square tables, which draw your eye to the front counter stocked with a few of the day’s sweet treats.

Morning, noon, and night, there are so many choices for a meal that you can’t help but spend at least five minutes grappling with your decision. Stuffed French toast, crepes with nutella or fruit, various egg scrambles and fruit dishes make up the majority of the breakfast selection. Lunch is an impressive selection of homemade soups, hearty burgers, grilled sandwiches, hefty meat and veggie wraps and fresh salads. If you’re looking for heavier fare, try the pasta, seafood and steak selections for dinner. Their offerings for the vegetarians out there don’t fall short either. Tofu scrambles, portobello and veggie burgers, vegetarian wraps and sandwiches and a variety of salads should appease those who would rather not eat meat. And health nuts need not worry either. Seasonal fruit and organic greens are offered with just about every meal, egg whites come in a variety of the breakfast plates and there are no french fries to be found here–just rustic cooked poatoes. Top off your meal with one of their special blend coffees or teas, and your meal is pretty complete.

Although parking is a beast, your trip into town should feel worth the trouble. It’s hard to complain when you eat for a king on a peasant’s pay. The prices at Blu Jam should be right down the alley for anyone, especially for those who are living the life of a struggling artist in LA. With breakfast and lunch selections ranging from $6-$12 and main courses between $11 and $17, it’s easy to get your fill on a budget. Plus, if you’re someone who can make it up and out during the early morning hours, you can take your pick of their breakfast menu for just $6.95. Any and everything for breakfast for only $7! Just make sure you place your order between 8:00 am and 10:00 am because by mid-morning, the special is over.

Make your way to Blu Jam sooner than later. It’s only open from 9:00 am-6:00 pm Sunday through Thursday, but the spot is open until 10:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Whether you’re going with a group of friends for lunch or solo to grab dinner and a coffee, Blu Jam Cafe probably has just want you want to satisfy your craving for comfort food.

There’s a glowing beacon of fun that rests in the crook of the treacherous 405 highway and Sunset Boulevard. It’s called the Angeleno Hotel. Inside that hotel, on the 17th floor penthouse, is West Restaurant and Lounge.

It’s floors above the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, and with the floor to ceiling windows that surround the entire restaurant, you can get a glimpse of most of the underlying area while you wine and dine. Go for breakfast, lunch, brunch or dinner, and you’ll have your choice of a menu designed by Executive Chef, Mark Mittleman, who used to be the Chef de Cuisine for Republic Restaurant and Lounge. Chef Mittleman brings his Italian heritage along with his Californian experience to each dish.

The main influence of the food is Italian with the everpresent Californian accents. We’d recommend the toasted three cheese ravioli or the Italian charcuterie and cheese plate for an appetizer. Shoot for the Kobe flat iron steak if you’re looking for something on the heavier side or the tuna tartare if you’re in the mood for something lighter. You can never go wrong with dessert. If you’re looking for something to hit the spot, try the molten chocolate cake filled with caramel. With its pleasant selection of pastas, salads, meats and seafood, there’s a little bit of something for everyone with a distinct palate.

What’s the one thing we definitely think you should remember? Well, West offers what they call a “Rush Hour Relief” happy hour from 4:00 pm-7:00 p.m. with half off all drinks under $20. Unless you plan on taking shots of gold flecked Patron, we think this applies to just about everything. If you’re stuck on the 405 on your way home, just swerve off the exit and stop off at West. VD also can rock the turntables and consistently delivers a bona fide groove. From old school jams to white label remixes he always keeps your body moving. His latest gig brings him to L.A. about once a month when he dj’s downtown in an art gallery’s basement. The Standard is over love muffins! Never again will you need to stand poolside when you can travel 21 floors up and over look LA—from the Valley to South Bay—at Elevate Lounge. This is THE place to be for anyone who wants to dip their toe into Downtown’s newest piece of nightlife. Last night, we got a taste of this hot spot at Flaunt’s August issue launch party featuring a performance by Midnight Movies, fall fashion preview by Orthodox and, our favorite, an open by from Skyy Vodka.

The space is amazing. Take the elevator up 21 flights and step off the elevator. If you want dinner, walk into Takami Sushi next door. If you want drinks and the dance floor, slide into the doors for Elevate. We’ll get to dinner in a bit.

With two large bars on either end of the lounge, a spacious dance floor, more than several lounging chairs and open-air windows lining the walls, there are plenty of things to admire about Elevate. Take your glass from the bar and wind your way through the half of the penthouse suite with a DJ serving up some of the most innovative mashes you’ve ever heard. With the summer breeze flowing through all sides of the building’s windows, it can never get too hot no matter how many bodies fill up Elevate’s half of the 14,000 square foot floor location. Feel free to check out this space because it opens to the public tonight! If you’re afraid of the weekend crowds, don’t worry. The lounge will be open every night of the week from then on.

The servers floating through the crowd carried trays from the restaurant next door: Takami Sushi & Robata Restaurant. The restaurant occupies the second half of the penthouse suite floor with a gorgeous, sparkling night time view of everything around (and below) you. You can even look to your left and catch a glimpse of everyone watching you as they chill at the Standard. Splendiferous.

Co-owner Emil Eyvazoff and General Manager Leonard Matsumoto gave us the private tour. It’s apparent that the $4 million renovation that went into this place paid off. From the kimono fabric lined walls and glass wine cellar to red balau wood slats on the ceiling and imported Italian leather floor tiling, this place has been designed to impressed thanks to the amazing Tag Front group. They’re responsible for what you see when you enter the Geisha House, BOA and Katana. There’s a sushi bar, a robata bar, lounge seating, standard tables for sit down lunch or dinner and a private dining area for parties. The menu has your standard sushi fare along with their own take on Japanese with a flair. Check out the illustrated sketches below for an idea of what we mean. And yes, those sketches are not rough, conceptualized starting points. That’s what it really looks like!

Downtown LA does not have the reputation that it should, but there are a few hidden gems. Elevate your nightlife, love muffins. Don’t be the last one to check out the spot that has completely redefined downtown LA!

Over the weekend, a few of us here at Lovebscott.com decided to test out one of LA’s newest spots. It’s called Ritual Supper Club. If you remember where White Lotus used to be, then you can find Ritual. (That’s right. White Lotus is no more for those of you who didn’t know.) Located on Cahuenga Blvd., just north of Hollywood Blvd., it’s a burgundy, red and gold classy spot where you can grab dinner or hit the dance floor.

The restaurant is located on the outdoor, open air patio with glossy tables and bamboo bucket seats and plush booths. The food is a Pacific Rim menu designed by Andrew Pastore who already has Sunset Room, Cabana Club and Pig ‘n Whistle on his resume. The down side? The food is very expensive, with entrées averaging $25. And don’t try to just get a salad to save money because there’s a one entrée minimum for each guest. The up side? The food is really, really good. Try the roasted Jidori chicken or vegetarian open-faced ravioli. There are also great appetizers such as the shrimp ceviche or the Ritual Roll—a daily special sushi selection. You will have dropped a lot of coins by the end of the night, but at least you can say your meal was good.

Head to the patio’s bar and order a few cocktails. We suggest the pomegranate martini, which is one of the best pomegranate martinis we’ve had in a while. The outdoor bar area gets crowded quickly with your usual Hollywood types. It can feel a bit claustrophic to have so many people fluttering by your table while you eat, which is why we suggest getting your cocktail and heading right to the club.

The actual club is really nice. It’s spacious, which is oh so important when it comes to that oppressive heat factor that comes up with most clubs. The floor is big, and if you’re feeling rambunctious enough, you can get right up onto the stage. There are the prerequisite VIP booths and stocked marbled bars along with flat screens for video mixing. The music is an interesting mix—hip hop, pop, mashes, techno and rock. Maybe we went on a bad night because the DJ wasn’t the best. In fact, he was a little wack, but from the tracks he did play, we know he had potential to do better!

Ritual Supper Club is one of Hollywood’s freshest faces. It has potential to be one of the better places to hang out because it has a cute look and a nice flair, but it will most likely appeal to a certain crowd—the kind that likes to be seen. Not people who really want to have a crunk Friday night. We definitely suggest it for a fabulous dinner, so save your coins love muffins! Treat yourself to a taste of Hollywood.

In cocktail shaker, combine lemon juice, sugar, gin and ice cubes and shake. Strain cocktail into flute and top off with champagne. Garnish with lemon peel and serve.

James Beach’s Original Mojito

Sweet, aromatic and tart. The James Beach mojito is smooth, and by one of the restaurant frequenters,it’s the ‘best mojito in LA’. Is it the best? Well, it’s definitely tasty, and at $9.00 a pop, it’s a pretty good version for those who crave the traditional. Plus, the intimate seating and low lighting along with the food at James Beach create a chill and relaxed beachcomber atmosphere where enjoying a nice drink feels mandatory. Sit at the sushi bar or request one of the tables set back in the shadows of the restaurant. James Beach is a nice spot for summer nights by the water.

Canal Club’s Raspberry Mojito

Lightly fruity, sweet and refreshing. The sister club to James Beach (located directly across the street) serves up a nice variation to the norm. Canal Club’s raspberry mojito doesn’t feel like it has a kick, but the trick behind the mojito is just that—hide the fact that rum is a key ingredient. Low on the carbonated component, the drink is quite sweet and almost velvety. The lime and mint flavors are not strong, which some people enjoy, while most others look for those aspects in a traditional mojito. Coming in at $10 a piece, it’s not bad, but there are places that have better versions like The Cheesecake Factory and even California Pizza Kitchen. Nevertheless, enjoy a drink in the quiet dining area or sit outside on the heated patio of James Beach. Wherever you sit, get ready for the crowd of young professionals who file into this place on the weekends.

Ma’Kai’s Mango Mojito

Delicate, exotic and cool. Ma’Kai’s mango mojito is a hit. Any bartender can tell you the difference between a drink with crushed ice and one with cubed ice. Ma’Kai’s bartenders must know the secret because they serve their mango version similar to a slushy in a highball glass. Their $12 version is a sleeper hit—it feels like a slurpee but if you have too many, you may walk out of the restaurant slurring! Take your drink at the bar or sip it outside on the fire-heated patio. As one of Santa Monica’s ocean-sided hot spots, it’s a great place for food and drink. The crowd is mixed, the bar is crowded and the drinks are top notch.

Last Tuesday (May 8th) I had my second event at the über chic Eleven in West Hollywood and it was an splendiferous success! We had such a great turnout, drinks all around and orgasmic music!

Anastacia Mcpherson from CW’s The Search for The Next Doll, Ray from BET’s College Hill 3, Naima Jamal (makeup artist extradornaire) and countless others came out to get their party on in the VIP lounge!

Big thanks to photographer Keith Carlos for his photos and of course my friends and fans for coming out! I’m also thankful that my friend Alex Quinn stopped by with his girlfriend (my love muffin Sona) after the premiere of his movie Lake Dead. Here’s the trailer below!

It’s in the heart of the mid-Wilshire district right at the intersection of La Brea Ave. and Wilshire Blvd. Walk under the yellow awning, and you’ll enter a small, intimate location with a compact bar, wooden tables on the floor and booths lining the exterior. I thought I’d share about a really nice restaurant that I found in Burbank called French 75. The atmosphere is wonderful. The live jazz band really puts you in a party mood. French 75 also offers a complimentary champagne toast around 8:00pm to 8:30pm Mon-Fri to all its guests. Best of all, it’s a great spot to be in a relaxed environment with a few of your favorite celebs! On my birthday a few cast members from ER were there as well as John Stamos, all just sitting around the bar having a good time. French 75 has that upscale feel with fairly down to earth prices. My only problem I encountered was I probably should have called a few hours before I came because they forgot my reservation but it was a very particular case so I don’t think it’s a common problem AND the manager gave me and my entire party (about 14 people) free champagne. We also got free glasses at the 8pm toast as well. I tried a few other drinks that were great. The food was very nice but the plus for this restaurant is definitely the atmosphere. Most of the furnishings in the lounge I was dying to take home!

Next to an Arnie Morton’s in a fairly nondescript office building, French 75 uses reds, vintage posters and tin ceilings in a seemingly impossible attempt to conjure Paris via Burbank. [LA.com]

Last night was another grand opening celebration for Kado, a new sushi-teppan restaurant located in The Farmers Market near Beverly and 3rd. 944 Magazine hosted the event, and it was definitely a grand affair. Sitting just above Bath & Body Works, there lies a sprawling sushi bar/restaurant/lounge connected by a bridge of sorts in the middle. The name Kado means “corner” in Japanese which is fitting seeing as how it sits right at the corner of the intersection between the Farmers Market and the main area of The Grove. Moving to Los Angeles has sparked my interest in one new food: Sushi! I heard about the Asian fusion menu at Tengu, and it seemed like the perfect spot for Japanese. Plus, it’s named after the Japanese god of “mischief”, so I HAD to go. When haunting the streets near UCLA, Tengu in Westwood is a great place to go if you’re looking for a chic spot with good food. The westside of Los Angeles boasts a well-known Korean BBQ restaurant that left a pretty good impression on me. It’s called Wharo, and according to various sources ‘wharo’ refers to the Korean charcoal pot that serves as a symbolic centerpiece where friends and family eat and spend time together. Today, the wharo must refer to the grill pit in the middle of each table where you can literally cook as you eat. Today’s lunch is brought to you by Pizzeria Mozza–THE best gourmet pizza in Los Angeles. At least the best I’ve had. This place is so popular that a weekend lunch table requires a week’s advance notice. Want to eat dinner there? Make sure you book it a month ahead. No joke. Anything with such a demand has to be good!

The westbound corner of Melrose and Highland Avenue used to be the home of Alessi Ristorante & Bar. Now 641 N. Highland boasts the location of LA’s hottest spot in the area. Pizzeria Mozza is a powerhouse pizza joint backed by Nancy Silverman and Mario Batali. Nancy is the co-owner of Campanile and the owner/baker at La Brea Bakery. Mario is a Food Network personality, the author of several cookbooks and an operator of seven New York hotspots. Add to that two places in Los Angeles–Mozza being one of them. When a co-worker announced that he had successfully scored a coveted reservation for six at Mozza, the decision to go was instantaneous. We had a week and a half to look forward to it, and no matter how hard I tried to get concrete information on what to expect, it was a struggle. The place is so new that the restaurant’s website doesn’t even offer a menu or photos of the interior, so everything was hearsay shrouded in mystery. Everybody loves Happy Hour–me included. The eclectic town of Venice has so much to offer, none of which I’ve actually seen, so it was the best time to do so. Tonight, I celebrated a wonderful Thursday evening with food and drinks. A friend and I made the turn onto Pacific Avenue and battled the Cali rain and befuddled Cali drivers for a parking spot. I caught a glimpse of the joint on the corner of Venice and Pacific, but something made me second guess that this was our destination of choice. It could’ve been the tacky neon sign glowing in the falling rain, or maybe it was the wood-colored paneling that made the location look like a boarded up beach shanty–characteristics of none of my typical destinations of choice. Near the corner of Fairfax and 3rd you’ll find Celadon–one of Los Angeles’ newest Euro-Asian fusion restaurants. (For those who are really in the know, Yi Cuisine originally inhabited this space just a few months ago.) The restaurant hosted an official opening night in conjunction with LA.com for critics, investors, family, friends and FOODIES (that’s where I come in) alike to check out the place. A friend and I decided it would be a great way to try what could potentially be a new LA hotspot. Celadon is definitely a beautiful restaurant. A year and a half after Hurricane Katrina destroyed the city, tens of thousands of people came to New Orleans to celebrate the climax of the Carnival season with parades, music and costumes!
