On November 16th the latest chapter from The Twilight Saga : New Moon held its movie premiere at Westwood, California’s Mann’s Village Theater. The new movie that has everyone talking, Precious (based on the novel Push by Sapphire) had its big premiere Sunday night at The New York Film Festival and the red carpet lit up with the stars including Mariah Carey, Paula Patton, Lenny Kravitz, Gabourey Sidibe, Jane Fonda and a few others. The hilariously funny, what-happens-in-Vegas-themed comedy The Hangover stayed put in the No. 1 slot at domestic theatres, pulling in an estimated $33.4 million. Disney/Pixar’s Up remained in the second slot, earning $30.5 million, bringing its cume to $187 million. Denzel Washington and John Travolta-starring The Taking of Pelham 123 opened in the No. 3 spot with $25 million, Night at the Museum was fourth with $9 million and $143 million in total. Rounding out the top five was Will Farrell-driven Last of the Lost with $9 million.

Eddie Murphy’s latest effort, Imagine That, opened with a wimpy $6 million, good for sixth place.

Any love muffins catch The Hangover yet? It’s too funny.

Disney/Pixar’s 3-D adventure, Up, is numero uno at the box office for a second week in a row, earning $44.2 million for a total cume of $137 million. R-rated The Hangover opened in second place with $43.3 million, while Will Farrell-starrer and retreading of the classic TV show, Land of the Lost didn’t fare so well, opening with a less-than-expected $20 million. This rather paltry opening for the comedy doesn’t bode well in the face of its $100 production costs, and bad reviews. In the No. 3 spot is former number one, Night at the Museum, earning $15 million, good for a total sum of $127 million domestically. Blockbuster Star Trek continues to hold its own, amassing $8 million from ticket sales, good for a galactic $223 total.

Disney’s 3-D animated feature, Up, was #1 at the box office this weekend, grossing a massive $68.2 million domestically. Ben Stiller’s Night at the Museum sequel came in second with $25.5 million for a total of $105.2 million. In third place was horror flick Drag Me To Hell with $16.6 million. The latest Terminator installment, Terminator Salvation, was fourth with $16.1 million and $90.6 million thus far. Rounding out the top five was Star Trek with $12.8 million and $209.5 million domestically.

In what proved to be the interesting winner of the #1 slot at this weekend’s boxoffice, Ben Stiller-driven Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian conquered pole position, finishing the super-sized holiday weekend with an estimated $70 million. Smithsonian marks Stiller’s biggest live-action opening, topping the $46.1 million earned opening weekend for 2004’s Meet The Fockers (this movie is too funny – you must catch if you haven’t already). Love muffins, early box office numbers are showing that kid comedy Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is beating out action-packed Terminator Salvation for the #1 slot with $53.5 million thus far.

For Night at the Museum to be a comedy, it sure was missing plenty of comedic punch lines. There was nothing special about this sequel – the only difference was that everything took place in a bigger museum (I felt like fast forwarding through most of the movie). As I mentioned before, in Terminator Salvation Christian Bale (John Connor) really came alive in this film compared to his more subdued tone in last year’s The Dark Knight. Not to mention McG’s riveting directing style. I still think Terminator Salvation will open at #1 despite the huge kid draw to Ben Stiller’s Night at the Museum sequel – official numbers will not be released until Tuesday due to the Memorial Day weekend. Let’s place our bets…Ha.

Thoughts?

I got the chance to see the latest installment in the Terminator series. Terminator Salvation has so much action, you won’t have much time to catch your breath. Let me tell you, there is some serious eye candy. Sam Worthington- take me right now! Sam plays Marcus Wright who signs a contract for his body parts to be used for what he thinks is a good cause (he’s on death row without much use for them). He kicks major booty! Christian Bale (John Connor) really comes alive in this film compared to his more subdued tone in last year’s The Dark Knight. Director McG (Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle) really brings everything together – I love his directing style. Oh – there’s a secret cameo by someone very integral to the whole Terminator series. I’ll let you figure out who it is when you see it.

The film is now in theatres – go see it.

Tom Hanks-driven Angels & Demons placed first at the North American box office this weekend, taking in an estimated $48 million – a bit on the lukewarm side of industry expectations. Internationally, the film fared well, accumulating $104.3 million from 96 territories, for a total worldwide cume of $152.3 million. The film is based on Dan Brown’s book of the same name that introduces the character Robert Langdon, who rose to fame in the film and movie also starring Hanks, 2006’s The Da Vinci Code. (...) The official box office numbers are in and as expected, the 11th installment in the Star Trek series shot warp speed into the top spot, earning $72.5 million over the weekend. This is the largest opening ever in the franchise — the cume stands at $76.5 million including $4 million from Thursday evening’s previews. Internationally, the film grossed $35.8 million from 54 territories. Historically, the series has been a weak performer at the international box office, but this is expected to change with this latest release.
