November 24, 2009 Hilarious Video: Black Hiker with Blair Underwood
Funny or Die sent me a great new video with Blair Underwood, all about the plight of being a black hiker. Apparently white people react in some extreme ways when they encounter a black guy out on the trail. It’s a really funny video and also features the great comedian Matt Braunger.

Funny, but I’ve experienced this! Whether it’s camping, whitewater rafting, backpacking or traveling – unless you’re in an all-black group doing it – you’re an exception to the rule if your black. People let you know that you stick out, even when you’re not thinking about it!
I went backpacking and a guy in his early 40’s was like “I’ve been doing this for years and I always wondered why African-Americans never do, but you proved me wrong.”
My only guess, at the time (3 years ago), was that a lot of black people are either never invited to do it or tend to avoid things that are perceived to be white/dangerous (skydiving, bungee jumping, wandering in the wilderness, etc). Then one of the other group members made some comment about how dangerous the African jungles are and I was, like, wtf?
My friend was the only black in his study abroad trip to Europe (as I was the only black in my group when I went to Europe and Egypt). Once someone realized he was African-American, they just assumed he was there for basketball!
It definitely happens!

I’m an African American hiker and no one pays me a bit of attention. Perhaps it was Blair’s looks. I’d certainly grab a camera and drop my jaw if I saw his yummy ass hiking.
