November 22, 2009 ‘New Moon’ Breaks Box Office Records – $140.7 Million

Twilight fans came out in full force this weekend to see the second installment in the Twilight Saga. The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened up with $140.7 million in its first three days and pulled in a total of $258.8 million worldwide, according to studio estimates. That total nearly doubles the opening of the first Twilight film back in 2008 which had an impressive $69.6 million.

Not only that, but ‘New Moon’ now has the record for the biggest Friday opening of all time with an astounding $72.7 million, beating previous record holder ‘The Dark Knight’ which opened in 2008 with $67.2 million on nearly 800 more screens.

This puts the film at the #3 spot for having the biggest opening weekend sales in history, only being beaten by Spider-Man 3 at #2 and The Dark Knight at #1.
