November 17, 2009 10 Days ‘Till Turkey! Try Not to Overdo It … I Said ‘Try!’

Hey love muffins! If you’re anything like me, you’ve already started the countdown for Thanksgiving, whatever your plans may be. Whether you’re going to kick back at your Mom’s all day, table hop from your cousin’s for cocktails, your grandma’s for dinner and your best friend’s for dessert; you know you’re going to have your face in a plate all day long! Some of us celebrate during the days that precede and follow “Turkey Day,” ending in a week’s worth of the consumption of mass quantities of food. Good food. The options are endless the appetite bottomless, so one must temper themselves to avoid the “muffin top,” “trucker gut” or the “Turkey 10″ … you get where I’m going with this, right? Let’s try not to lose ourselves in the bliss of family, fun and, most importantly, food! Key word being: try. I can’t make any promises but, again, I will “tryyyy.” Who’s with me? All my LoveMuffins who plan to participate, leave a quick reply! Even if it’s a quick note that says “B. Scott, I will try.” That’s all I need to know. That I am not alone. Let’s support each other in this. Take a look at a few tips I put together for myself and those who want to TRY and behave at the table next week! Good Luck!

Stay Out the Pots - if you’re the one getting down in the kitchen, stuffing turkeys, baking hams, pies and cakes, etc., chances are you “sample” every dish you make! While it is absolutely necessary to make sure your cuisine is on point, you know it is! That’s why you keep going into the pot to “sample!” Stay out the pots and save the appetite for the sit down! But there’s a parallel! If you “snack” enough during the preparation, you won’t stuff yourself at dinner. I know. I’m flip-flopping, but you know yourself so do what works for you!

Use Restraint - if you know you’re going to go for all the main dishes and later dessert(s), take smaller portions! You know what I mean! After the second heaping spoonful, the third is unnecessary! Move on to the next dish and limit yourself to a few spoonfuls, so when it’s time for sweets, you don’t don’t feel so remorseful for cleaning the dessert plate too!

Distract Yourself - it’s so easy to succumb to recliners, cocktails and the plethora of platters before you in these times! Remember, this holiday is all about giving thanks! So a healthy distraction would be to busy yourself around the kitchen with the chef – wash the dishes, take out the trash and set the table! Being helpful is the perfect distraction before you sit down at anyone’s table so it should ease the the propensity to overindulge!

Watch the Bottle - for some of us, cocktails go hand in hand with all the festivities! And over drinking will surely get you muffin topping in no time! So stay hydrated with water and watch your alcohol consumption. Try not to switch from beer to alcohol to wine. Stick to one juice, mix or wine so you don’t go confusing your metabolism with all those empty calories! Stick to one and drink lots of water! Avoid fatty Egg Nog and super sweet ciders also!

Walk it Off - If you have a pooch, all this means to you is take “Fluffy” for a good, long, quick stride after dinner. *Actually, before would be better because your metabolism will be burning before you eat versus after.*Just a suggestion. But be a leader and suggest that you all take a brisk walk before or after you feast to kick up digestion a notch.

Phew, love muffins! I say this now but we’ll see how we all fare this holiday season! Can’t wait to hear success stories from all of you. But we’re here to support each other! I hope this helps us all! Double kisses!

-Love, B. Scott

i’m making my famous strawberry cheese cake short bread and i’m going to TRY and share. I think that should do it cause i been working my butt off taking these finals i’m too ready for a break and i’ve been craving some of my mommy’s seafood dressing i’m from New Orleans you have eaten until you been to Lousiana

  • I’ll try B but its gonna be hard for me when it comes to the sweets. I love sweets!!!! UGH but they don’t love me back …. LOL

  • I will do just that, B! I will work out on Thursday morning while my food is baking, maybe go for a walk after dinner…and work out Friday and Saturday by doing some dvds or exercise tv on cable.

  • What great suggestions!!! Yes, I will definitely be trying my best to not over indulge! And I promise to take my yorkie “Gio” out for a stroll before dinner…well with a glass of wine in hand…does that count as burning calories??? lol…you know how it gets when the relatives are ALL around…man listen, 2pm and the wine bottle gets cracked open! I will definitely not overstuff myself this year, actually the family has opted to go OUT to dinner because then our portions are controlled! AH HAAAAA! More than one way to skin a cat…no dishes and less calories, go figure!!! Enjoy your Thanksgiving B!! and you’ll have to let us know how it goes! :)

  • I’m not making any promises. Already fasting in preparation for Thanksgiving AND Xmas :-D
