August 27, 2009 New Music: Mariah Carey – I Want To Know What Love Is
Mariah’s official first single was set to premiere later this week, but lucky for us it leaked early! “I Want to Know What Love Is” is a remake of the 80s classic originally performed by Foreigner. I knew that when it was time for Mimi to bring it that she would come and shut it down! She is singing her ass off. Period. Everything that Mariah has to offer is beautifully crafted into this song. The song has been described as a “powerhouse ballad” and I have to admit that I wasn’t sure what exactly to expect, but this blew me away. I can’t wait to hear this live because I know that she is going to bring it!

This song is amazing, I really like it, its growing on me more and more, this singing goes well with the title its very light and angelic, not overdoing it at all.
I’m not sure if it’ll be a #1 but def a top 10!

This song is okay, nothing new. Mariah is trying hard to capture a 20 something market is her close to 40 something world. B Scott, why are you such a biased person. You seem kinda miserable.
Mariah’s ‘Glitter’ project was underrated, she needs to add some of those ballads to her ‘just average’ Memoirs CD. I was at the listening party in NYC in L.A. Reids office only 20 people showed up. She’s going to have to come harder.

I actually REALLY like this song. My only issue is when she “breathes” the chorus rather than really singing it. She could have killed that part.

Yeah, it’s a little boring, and too soft. I don’t see where she put any heartfelt emotions into this track…unlike what Ms. Ross and Patti gave us with their renditions.

ummm…it starts off beautifully. However. WAIT let me listen-again.
ok. I really did re-listen. instead of her doing all that background stuff the oohs and awwss.
I wish she would have just let her voice flow with killer high notes.
But’s it’s a beautiful song. gotta listen to the original-now.

Mariah Carey’s I Want to know what love is ……..is beautiful. She has returned to form after the questionable single “obsessed”.
Mariah did leave out the Incredible 2nd verse. That’s the centerpiece of the song. But she does sound classy, incredible and pretty.
Thank GOD we finally got a SINGER who is singing, so tired of Rihanna, Keri Hilson and beyonce in those nasal tones. I need Vocals.
Thank you mariah

You are so fake and biased. There is nothing amazing about this song and she is not bringing it. It’s just ok. It’s ok if you like an artist, but she is a studio singer and always has been.

Wow! I didn’t know it was so many lambs! As much as I love Mariah, this isn’t it for me. Let’s compare Journey’s “Open Arms” or Phil Colins “Against all odds” then compare it to her current cover. Hate to say it, but by the sounds of all the lambs on here, you evidently don’t know what Classic Mariah sounds like! Remember “If it’s over”, “Vanishing”, “Always be my baby”? Now that’s classic Mariah! That whispering shit reminds me of “Charmbraclet”, decent album but how many cuts do you actually remember besides “Through the rain” and “Bringing on the heartarche”. Let’s be real people! No need to insult either Mariah or Whitney, but ……..Well this is not one of Mariah’s greatest covers. Oh, I forgot, ” Can’t live” is also a great cover”.

Mariah’s version gives me chills and she mixed up her classic Ballad formula with the structure. My only complaint is that she removed what she did. IT’s over too soon! hope it will be a hit

does this sound like a fuckin’ song done to appease 20 y/o’s? really? what about it says that to you? it can’t be the lyrics….and the stripped down production. nothing about this song screams that it’s for the kiddies. so try again.
and for the people that talk about the song being boring…..look @ it like this. the first verse & chorus are nothing but musical foreplay……that all leads up to the eargasm at the end. get into it people. unless y’all are the straight ‘fuck & run’ type……then this is just not for you.
and “Brian”….you are showing your ass, sweetie. Mariah has not ALWAYS been known as a studio singer. unless you’re 12 (actually, she was still blowing in ‘97)…so, unless you’re 7…….shut the fuck up with that bullshit. youtube is your friend….feel free to go play with it. in traffic. blindfolded. bitch. boo. bye.
whether you consider her a studio singer now or not…..at least she can deliver it in the booth. it’s funny that this ONE song…poor quality (and all)…has vocally defecated over some artists’ entire albums. oh well.

I love me some Mariah Carey. At first listen it did take me back to her Charmbracelet album. But it’s not a bad song, there’s just so many fake ass hater’s out there. Get over yourself because all ya’ll do is give the some more attention. If it’s not for you then keep it moving.
Why hate so hard. In my opinion she could leave the club bangers to these new artist. Why should she have to come like she’s 20 with all that “Up in the club” and “Shake my ass” bull crap. This is classic Mariah, it may not sound like “Vision of love” but she still sings circles around more then half of these wannabes out there. I love the song, love Mariah and I can’t wait for the album.
I guess I’ll see all of you haters in the store buying the album too. I’ll even give ya’ll a good excuse. Just say “I’m buy the album to see if she delivers on at least one song.” Maybe you could get away with that. I know so many people that hate on her to the max yet they have her albums hidden in their car, and as soon as a song plays on the radio they sing along, talking about “I hate it so much, but it comes on all the time so that’s how I know the words.” Ya’ll crack me up.

She is using distractions as usual. She never just sings the song. Thre is a lot of baground distrations and her main voice is whispery and scratchy. No real power ballad here. She rellies on that whistle note a little too much and it is annoying. The origional song had Chaka tearing up the ending. Mariahs doesn’t even reach half that level.

ExaCtly..anyone who is hating on Mariah right now is just a plain haTer cause no one compares to this woman’s technical ability in doing a song. This was off the charts. No..she didn’t “blast out” the song all the way through..which has never been her style anyway. She did it her way and it’s beautiful. This has been her signature style of singing and she always pulls it off beautifully. Far from boring. I have heard (and hoping it’s true) that this is a radio edited version and it’s actually longer but ofcourse can’t believe everything you read..but im hoping cause it does seem to be over too fast..so it may be true. Anywhoo..I love it..she really did put it down on this track..im very hopeful for this album!!

It was good…got the chills, which is more than I can say for Whitney. But its still not 100% classic Mariah, but thats ok. She can get it back…its not like crack cocain fucked up her vocal chords or anything??
But i think we should focus our energy more on NEW AGE ICONS, like Leona Lewis and Jenifer Hudson, just saying. Mariah is past her prime.

i can say whatever the fuck i want on here so go fuck urself haters and the song is still boring and dated, she lacks soul, power, and emotion in her music. she’s a studio artist she will not be able to sing that song live and that’s the truth. every artist she sung live with has slayed her ass. patti labelle, aretha franklin, and whitney houston celine dion all have slayed her ass live on stage, her voice is fading and u r just as dumb if u think it’s not.

LuvHer..Whats with all the name calling? It just makes you look pressed. Anyway, I love Mariah but as I said she is not a LIVE singer. If you were a true fan you would know that. In the early 90s yes she did have wonderful live performances. MTV Unplugged was fantastic but as her voice began to decline she often lip synched her high notes. With the amount of work she put in who can blame her. But for the last 12 years or so she has been all studio? YouTube her performances this decade. Having said that it does not make a difference because we all know she can sing, write, etc.

August 30, 2009 at 6:47 pm
@Brian… with all due respect, how is she not a “live” singer.. .have you seen her in concert? I have, twice.. and in person…she is ON POINT, vocally… period… remember the Grammy awards where she sang “We Belong Together” and “Fly Like a Bird”… ON POINT. (both in this current decade and both within the past 3 years) Mariah has NEVER been known as a “studio singer”… you make a comment about how for the past 12 years she’s been a “studio singer”… but with that statement, u’d be talking about back in 1997… when she was singing LIVE everywhere (i.e DIVAS Live, Around the World tour, etc…)…
now she’s never been known as a performer either (i.e. singing AND dancing) but that’s not her thing… with her voice, all she has to do is stand there and sing…
before making absolute statements… should really collect all the evidence.. u kno…
(note: none of this meant to offend… and i look fwd to, if it happens, a lively debate… definitely not attacking you personally as I don’t know you)

First up, i really liked this song. it ended a bit too soon, so im kinda hoping the album version is longer. so all in all its great!
Secondly, i can’t believe this song has caused such a up roar!!!
Its a power ballad marketed to her fan’s!
Most of her fan’s out there will know that THIS album
“Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” is particularly for them.
If you don’t like Mariah Carey then why waste your time listening to this song! Simple.

I’ll never understand the mentality of the person that specifically seeks out and comments on stuff they dont like. You don’t see me on the Paris Hilton threads ranting about her vocal ability. I think ultimately, beyond the strictly negative comments that are posted by this brand of people, the content of what they have to say says more about them, then what they are actually saying. Maybe it’s my maturity level, but I just cant be bothered with things I don’t like.
Anyway, I’ve always loved Mariah – I’ve had my own convictions about her vocals at times, but as listeners, you can either accept it for what it is – take it or leave it, not to say you cant have an opinion on it – but realise it’s art and she’s giving it to us and sharing – try to be constructive and let her live….

I must say I’m extremely disappointed.
Mariah’s voice sounds so ravished, almost as if it is a shell of what it used to be.
What is going on with Mariah’s voice? Maybe she needs to have vocal-node surgery.
It does not sound very good, her notes were moving all over the place.
This is not a good sign.
And FYI I am actually a LAMB I will purchase the new album because I buy all the Mariah albums because I love her, but this is my honest criticism.
I just don’t see this being a big single for her, the vocal delivery is scattered with too many fluctuations from the whisper voice and her voice actually sounds hoarse in some areas.
This is going to be bad trust me.
Hopefully she delivers on the rest of the album.

August 31, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I ♥ it. Mariah made it her own and incorporated a lot of her older vocal styling to the song (i.e. 2:24 “change this lonely liiiiiiife…iife!…”) that’s melisma at its best and you can find that all over the Day Dream Album. Her vocal style is not for everyone but it certainly builds a climax. You basically know that she’s going to tear it up at the end which is why she sings the song mostly in her whisper register. That is only for emotion. It is not that she can’t sing the song in full voice. You wouldn’t want a piano player to play a tune without using the soft petal would you? If you did there would be no emotion or climax just loud unnecessary noise.

Whitney Houston is changing the Game.. Mariah pushed her album back and went back in the studio to record this remake with her actually attempting to sing. After she heard Whitney’s new music she is trying to compete with Whitney. Give it up Stankriah.. You can’t compete with Ms. Houston. Do yo thang and jump back on that AutoTUNE.. LOL… LOL… LMAO…

Being a Foreigner fan it was not a bad cover however it reminds of what a version could have sounded like if Michael Jackson would have done it. Production was similar to his songs and if Mariah and Michael could have done this together it would have been a mega hit. I agree with another that she didn’t own the song and she definitely has the voice to do it.

She covered this song way before hearing anything off of Whitneys album. She actually was in competition for it with Marc Anthony. I love Ms. Houston, and Ms. Carey but for me this one song show more power + range, than anything on Whitneys album, and I love them both dearly. I love Whit, but I live for Mariah.

I am a huge Mariah Carey fan since Vision of Love days. I basically grew up listening to her songs. I just don’t get why most “FANS” as what they like to call themselves (when they truth is you are not) are still hoping that the Mariah Carey’s vocals from 90-97 will come back, it will never come back even if we wanted to. You’re expecting too much everytime she puts a single or an album out.
If you really are her fans, you should accept the fact the time changes her vocals and it is not just over night, it’s been happening since 98 and it started on her Rainbow album. Hoarse and all. Why can’t you just be happy she’s still here making an album for her fans? And if she wanted to win new fans then be it. It won’t harm you if she does.
Seems like whatever she does, some fans ain’t happy with what she’s doing. Real fans are happy just to be able to hear her sing and release an album and fake fans will just say, “I am a fan but I hate her remakes and the way she delivers it. She needs to belt it out.” See the difference?
I just don’t get it why some people loves to compare the vocals of someone who’s in her late 30’s (Mariah) to an early 20’s Leona and mid 20’s Beyonce. Look if those two came out the same year as Mariah and actually release their very first single, Mariah (Vision of Love), Leona (Bleeding Love) Beyonce (you can think any single she released) and perform live in Grammy’s who will win the crowd by belting out? Think about it.
And someone said that Whitney and Celine’s voice are still the same when singing live? I don’t want to say anything against the two coz I do love their vocals but the same as Mariah’s, their vocals changed too and that’s a fact. Whitney’s voice is damaged by drugs and with Celine, i don’t know what causes it. Even Aretha’s voice ain’t the same anymore.
For me, she doesn’t need to prove herself anymore by belting it out like most newbies does. She’s already proved it too many times. Singers come and go but a legend like her will still be here.

This is one of those Mariah songs that is going to grow on you whether you like it or not. My absolute favorite Mariah song is ‘All I’ve Ever Wanted’, and it wasn’t even released, what a crying shame! Check back on Music Box for those of you band-wagoner Mariah fans. This song has all the styling of my favorite, with a back to roots start from the original album. Everyone bitches that she screams, she yells, she’s losing her voice, she moves through her octaves too much…press release everyone, she CAN! What other artist do you know that can do what she can, has, and will??? The number one female recording artist OF ALL TIME continues to do it better than anyone else can. Kudos to her for bringing it in so many different ways. I was a fan from day one, and I have followed her through it all, finding songs that I absolutely love on every single album she has created. I don’t love every one of her songs, but she has over thirty that have touched my heart to the core. THAT is why I am her lamb.

I’m not going to lower myself down to everyone elses level on here and bash other people or bash Mariah i like her rendition of this song even though it isn’t her best material it is good she is showing that she still has some voice left in her and isn’t going to stick with those lil catchy sexy songs she has made recently she is a true singer and true singers never lose their voice or talent i can’t wait for the new CD to come out i know it will be a hit no matter what (: you go Mariah and thank you B. Scott for letting us hear it before the album its very generous of you.
Also it Mariah is showing that she isn’t going to be one of those artist that stay hidden and let the younger ones take over like some are she is showing she can work in today’s world of music and fit in right with Beyonce and Rihanna she will do fine and so will her new album.

I think it’s a nice song. As she has mentioned in her interview, she wanted to sing with her upper register with this song; therefore her classic signature vocals are restrained and many fans do miss that part. I think it’s good to take a chance to do something different. The use of the upper register allows Mariah to have the opportunity to make the song her own and she has achieved that. I do wish that the song was longer or without chorus since the song is shorter, the chrous lending the voice takes away from enjoying Mariah’s voice. She is certainly playing a balancing act here as well, trying to please her young audience and older. Many new singers don’t have a Whitney or Mariah range; therefore she is shying away from that. Critics also have complained that her singing can also be a bit too much vocal areobics.
I guess, it’s hard to appease everyone. I am grateful that we have singer in this world who has a beautiful voice and is sharing her gift with us all.

Starr, u can say what you like, true enough. That doesnt make it valid. Vocals are a matter of opinion. However when it comes to numbers, Mariah owns EVERY girl u mentioned. do i smell a little haterade on callin’s, ron, RR and Starr’s part? how many times have they sang live on oprah and got a standing ovation. i, for one of many feel like she blew this song away. her face looks a lot like she did when she sang on the song “emotions”- callin-stop hating on mariah because she sounds so beautiful. sometimes when there is a remake of the song and it’s not as good, but mariah’s version of the song is so unique. it’s as if it’s an original song with the same words as the old one-if that makes sense. anybody else agree? so to all the ones making negative comments about mariah-stop drinking haterade
