August 19, 2009 New Music: Whitney Houston – Salute
A brand new track from Whitney’s upcoming album leaked earlier today in its entirety. “Salute” was penned by R. Kelly and produced by Tricky Stewart. The song is nice, but like the rest of the material I’ve heard from this album it seems really safe. This song doesn’t do much for me, but honestly I wasn’t really expecting anything amazing.
In other Whitney news, she’s been confirmed to be appear on Oprah in the near future. I’ll definitely be tuning in to hear what she has to say. It should be interesting…

B Scott.. I could agree with some of the slow stuff we have heard. but cmon! you think her voice on this song is BAD? You don’t ear the anger and realness in dis track? It wouldn’t even sound right with her belting kinda voice. I was PRAYING that she didn’t come back in 2009 trying to make r&b music like it’s 1995; people would laugh and say the crack still has her cause she aint woke up and realized music has changed..dis is current and Innovative. I can tell her voice has changed, but you gotta give credit where it is due… dis song does knock!
Now.. if dis chick start “rapping” and taking her clothes off… I WILL HAVE A PROBLEM LOL

ACE, B didnt say anything that wasnt true. I LOVE Whitney – she’s amazing – but her vocal damage is WAY worse than Mariahs and if you think otherwise you are fooling yourself!
The song is cute. It’s hard to let go of the old Whitney, this material is more the speed of Keri Hilson or Mary J, when she’s being vocally lazy…but this effort pales in comparison to THE VOCIE that once was. I’ve come to accept present day Whitney..a far cry from her glory years but God bless her for sticking in there.

Omg B. Scott I must say I share the same sentiments on everything…BUT YOU ARE SO WRONG HERE….AND FOR THE FIRST TIME…I AINT WITH U HERE….THIS SONG IS SO AMAZING…anyone who knows Whitney’s story will feel this song…she stayed with that man for 14yrs of her life…lost her way and she is fighting to find it again…I feel what she is saying and I celebrate with her…she made it through. That song is pure bliss…beautifully written…it carries a women empowerment message. I missed such music, with something you can take and use in yr life…a msg that sticks…a song that makes you ask yrself…am I trapped in my relationship..if so do I need to SALUTE and walk out…above all I missed her so much..Whitney is brave to try and amend and re-establish from an embarrasing public problem..most star wld have given up and locked themselves in thier mansions..BUT WHITNEY IS SAYING HERE IAM..THIS IS WHAT I HAVE DONE IN MY LIFE..THIS WHAT I AM TRYING TO FIX..TAKE ME OR LEAVE ME..AND U KNOW WHAT B SCOTT…I’M WITH HER EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.
I don’t think you ever really liked Whitney anyway….I’m thinking back..yes uv never really liked her…BUT DNT HATE..DNT PUT OUR BLACK SISTER DOWN..ITS BEEN 7YRS..SHE BEEN HELL PLEASE DNT PUT MORE FLAMES ON HER…LETS QUENCH HER BURNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to disagree with you B. This song is hot, it is not a slow tempo ballad so you shouldnt expect the grandstanding notes. But this song is a perfect mixture of being young but also mature (a line that Mariah too often crosses). I feel that this album is shaping up to be really good. I know I’m getting it.

I’ll tell you one thing. Whitney’s vocals on this song SHITS on Mariah’s vocals on “Obsessed”. This whole song shits on “Obsessed”. Production and everything. This song is FIYAH! I thought “I Look To You” was too boring but Whitney brought it with this joint. HOTNESS!

But Mariah’s voice is NOT the same either….yet BScott wanna be subjective and PRAISE anything she does….I just feel being in the game he is…he cannot expect to go far without being objective….and he was CLREALY being biased here…..you put Whitney on the stage to sing Salute & Mariah to sing Obssesed…..YES….WHITNEY would kill her voice, lyric…content wise…..and performance wise….based on the the delivery of the two songs we have from each…….this is no Mimi bash….it’s just to show how BIASED BScott is….

Maybe Mariah was singing about you on “Why you’re so obsessed with me” because everything I’ve heard so far from Whitney surely trumps the auto-tuned Mariah songs. But you seem to think Mariah’s “nursery rhyme” lyrics to be the bomb. More love to you on that. Why can’t we love both of our divas? Anyhow, people needs to realize that Whitney may have speed up the deteriotion of her voice a slight bit, but most aging female singers start to develop that natural husk anyhow, etc Aretha, Glady’s, Dionne. More power to Whitney for standing tall after all the public embarassement to return and challenge her ownself. As I see it, the only competition Whitney has out there is Old Whitney versus New Whitney. I’ll take them both,

I actually like this song as I have liked all of them thus far. No, she’s NOT the same Whitney of the 80s or 90s with the let-me-take-this-Dolly-Parton-Country-song-and-rip-it-Pop/R&B-with-my-own-signature-style-and-have-it-become-the-best-selling-single-of-all-time, but she sounds a lot better than these Pop Tart artists of today. I have always been a Whitney supporter even though her singing gaffes and mishaps, and right now, I think she sounds well. When Sade left the game and came back 8-years later, she had the exact same sound as if she had never left. When Maxwell left the game and came back 8-years-later, his sound was a little different, but “Pretty Wings” continues to fly, At this juncture, Whitney is doing much better than I anticipated and I hear her pain through “Salute” and cannot wait to purchase her album. This woman has been through enough and it’s time to celebrate her return as a singer who can still sing despite her tumultuous personal life.

This is my kind of song. Whitney you betta sang this song fo I slap you gurl! B.Scott I don’t know why you’re continuing to wait for some 1985 type of ballad from her b/c it ain’t happenin. She’s done that for years and has sacrificed her voice to set standards doing those types of songs. This is a new Whitney and to be honest I’m not mad at her. She workin with what she got. You call tell by listening to her new songs that she has more emotion, passion, and grit in her voice than I’ve ever heard before. I’ll take that kind of sangin any day. She’s not forcing something that’s not there, and for that Ms. Houston I say thank you. Good luck on the album…good to see you back doing what you love!

WOW, now we see your true colors starting to show. Everything on MiMi’s last cd was safe and showed absolutely no vocal acrobats at all, not one song she sand the entire cd in one octave, but u thought it was FIRE, then Obsessed she showed even less vocal chops and used autotune, still u said HOTNESS. Now whitney comes out with one of the hottest tracks i’ve heard and fits her life so well and u say its safe and nothing special?
dont call it a comeback, i’ve been here for years. Get em Whit.

I am feeling this track a lot more than “Million Dollar Bill”. This song is also very easy to relate to–for anyone who has had to conquer a storm, trial or test. It might not be a track she markets for radio, but in my opinion, it fits nicely with the sound of the rest of her album.

August 20, 2009 at 11:41 am
Mariah diasappointed me with her last album, mike. I am happy that her fans have begun to realize how she is duping them by trying to stay relevant instead of sticking with the people who got her to the spot that she is in.
As far as whitney goes, people are still singing the songs that she made in the 80s and 90s. after ‘hero’, ‘vision of love’, and ‘we belong together’, nothing that mariah has brought out could be considered timeless or classic.

i’ma call it like i see it. i actually like this song from Whitney. first one i’ve instantly liked….and felt her vocals sounded pretty good on.
unlike all the delusional people out there, i am not expecting her to sound like she did 15 years ago. however, she will get the pass because she is a LEGEND.
the thing that irks me though…..it seems that just b/c Whitney’s a few shades darker than ‘the other diva’ (and is undeniably a black woman)….she will get the pass to be as subpar as she wants to be. people have been jumping to her defense to say that there is no way in hell we should expect her to sound like she did when she first started. but yet, these same people shit on Mariah for not having the same vocals either. at least Mariah sings all of her background vocals. but i digress.
as for the idiot who compared this song (Salute) to Obsessed…..of course Whitney’s vocals are gonna sound more ‘complicated’. different feel….different tempo…different vibe. however, go ahead & compare Salute w/ I Stay In Love. that’s more of a fair comparison.
at the end of the day though……people like who they like. and it’s very little that can be done to change that. sad.

Ok ok ok!
Let me say, B.Scott I think you are throwing some shade at Whitney. I am a straight up Mariah Carey fan, but i can tell you as much as i like Obsessed this song is definitely better. Obsessed is a song that one of these underaged trollips should be singing. (Vocally) no whitney is not what she used to be, but neither is Mariah. E=MC2 was a true safe record. While it had some amazing songs, she didnt “sang” to much of anything on it. Now The Emancipation Of Mimi, she sang her ass off! (see Mine Again/Stay the night). I believe this record (salute) is fantastic, while safe; she is still doing R & B justice and staying true to her grown and sexy. Brava whitney for being an artist and not trying to be Keyshia Cole 2.0 . xoxo. PS: If the reviews are right, Mariahs new CD is going to shut it down come Sept 29th.

B. Scott u r so wrong this song is Fiyahhhhhhhhhh. If this would have been Mariah singing this song u would have thought different. Whitney might not be like she was back then but she can still sing circles around these wanna b diva’s. The music world have been missing real music and Whitney is bringing it back. History has proven everytime Whitney used her voice it gets stronger and u can tell that in certain songs she did. I for one will always support Whitney, she been thru hell and back. Her entire album is HOT. And u B. Scott are such a shallow person to say that about her music. I use to respect u but after this I’ve lost all respect and luv for u. But I do wish Whitney and Mariah the best.

Mariah album was pushed back for obvious reason. The buzz is all about Whitney at the moment. Not only are people anxiously waiting to hear the record, but they are also wondering if Whitney can delivered it live. It would take a few weeks for the momentum to minimize so Mariah album can rank well also. Hate for Mariah album “MEMOIRS” of an Imperfect Angel to be titled “MEMORY” of an Imperfect Angel. Much love to both singers, for a love them both for their individual style. I think the landmark moment was when Whitney and Mariah duet together. Quite obvious that Whitney sent Mariah into a Whispering phase that she can’t seem to shake. Mariah turned hip hop because she knew she couldn’t deliver classic style singing. Mariah voice sounds choppy, and it breaks to ever so often now. Listen to her updated version of Hero. Instead of “And then a hero lies in yooooooooooooooooooou. Now it’s “And then a hero lies in you oo oo oo ooo ooo–yeah yeah yeah. Not as smooth anymore

Wow! Some idiot mentioned Whitney should have left the game at her best, I want you to walk out on your job and see how you make it. Singing is Whitney’s job like whatever you do is your job. Another idiot mentioned a phrase Whitney sang in the song , Don’t Call It A Comeback and stated the phrase is outdated and at the end of there comment stated Peace Love and Hair Greese now isn’t that OUTDATED. Who goes around now saying Peace Love And Hair Greese. Anyway’s Whitney is doing what people not used to anymore and that is sanging. No she doesn’t sound like she did 25 plus years ago but she still has that Gift in her voice. People singing is not hitting high notes or Singing loud. Singing is when people can understand every lyric you sing and you still get that good feeling of what they are singing. Whitney still has that magic in her voice that makes you stop and listen. Aretha doesn’t sing high she still has it…Gladys never sang with Octave Range and she still has it. Whitney no matter what will go down as One of the If not the best singers in history.
