August 14, 2009 Listen Up: Trey Songz ft. Drake – Successful

I know “Successful” has been around for a minute, but lately it’s been connecting with me on a whole new level. Drake previously released the song on a mixtape featuring Trey Songz & Lil Wayne, but it’s also featured on Trey’s upcoming album Ready and has Trey singing an extra verse. Do we all “just wanna be successful” and make our dreams come true?

  • As someone who has tasted success and walked away from it, no I don’t want it. It cost me greatly with my personal life, people were all up in my business, I worked long hours and made good money, won many awards for my achievements, blah blah blah…..but I was majorly stressed and unhappy.

In the end, I chose to walk away because even with the materialistic things I had, I was not satisfied. I kept wanting more and more things because people looked to me to shine and have that swagger. When I see people with the big houses, nice cars, etc. I feel bad for them because I know their pain. They are in a miserable trap and end up doing drugs or becoming alcoholics to ease the pain. Look at what happens when they lose the things they worked for. They commit suicide or go crazy. Believe me when I say, define what is successful to you and leave the materialistic crap out of it. My idea of success right now is to be happy with who I am, make good enough money and live below my means, and travel the country and world because I now have time to do it. Trust I have been much happier ever since I left it all behind.

But for those who still want the materialistic success, may God bless you on your journey because the devil tends to be the one that tests you along the way.

  • @ KR

Some people are just not cut out for success. They are not good at judging character and keeping their true friends close. With great privilege comes great responsibility! Success can be obtained my many but maintained by few.

  • I don’t know, I think the problem (referring to Lexington and KR’s comments) is that it’s very hard to define exactly what success is. It’s quite personal. I don’t think it really has anything to do with money, even though it sometimes goes along with money.

In any case, I like the song even though I’m not really into materialism. It seems to me to display a level of honesty not usually found in songs about money and success.

  • @ Lexington

Seems like you are cut out for success. You seem to know the recipe on how to keep that kind of success I walked away from. Good luck with that.

As far as success, I am still successful. Only this time I am successful on my terms. I still have my education, my connections, I own my life and I am still making good money. I just don’t have that extra bull crap to deal with by being in the spotlight.

  • I’m not a huge fan of this song or Drake for that matter, but I loved Trey’s part. I ‘ve been going back and forth with this man. One minute he puts out golden tracks, the next it’s garbage. i guess he’s just one of those artist that you have a love/hate relationship with.
