August 6, 2009 New Music: Whitney Houston – Million Dollar Bill
Whitney Houston’s official 1st single, “Million Dollar Bill,” is set to impact tomorrow (August 7th), but lucky for us it leaked a day early. There have been a few looped snippets floating around, but I have for you the official CDQ version. It was penned by Alicia Keys & produced by Alicia’s boyfriend, Swizz Beats. It has an old school feel and shows off a bit more of Whitney’s vocals and she sounds good! Alicia did a great job writing this track. I can already hear this being played at cookouts and family reunions everywhere. Whitney’s album, I Look To You will be in stores August 31st!
Take a listen and let me know what you think of the song!

This song doesn’t really do it for me. I mean, she sounds great! Her vocals weren’t “I Will Always Love You” but she still did a good job. As you said B., this will be played at cookouts and family reunions. Nothing more. I guess I’ll just stick to my Mariah Carey. She seems to have a more promising album.

Da Bomb.. OMG that voice can make you shout. so clear and its only gonna get better with time. “He makes me feel like a Million Dollar bill” is ganna be the new catch phrase. This is gonna be huge!!! Who in the business right now is singing like this with that much power. Nobody.. Nobody.. This is what you call a “CUT”….. Alicia hooked her up with this one. And that beat is on time. Takes you back to the 70’s disco era Donna summer style.. People miss this kinda singin. it will be a smash.

Finally…a track that is deserving of THE VOICE! It has very old school/R&B feel and definitely will make Whitney’s fans fall back in love….but the true test will be the new fans and the younger listeners! But I think Whitney is more concerned with celebrating her comeback to her love. Music.
This is a great summer track! =) Just in time Whitney! Welcome back… its LIKE YOU NEVER LEFT!

Ok I tried … really ! (Sighs and gives sad face
… I digress) I did, but I couldn’t even make it through the whole song yall (and don’t “ah! me” i’m just bein real.) I love me some Whitney and I hung on w/ the delusional Whitney-heads (Definition: “Whitney Houston superfans whole were denying the elephant in the room”) as long as I could. So I was ready for the COME BACK of all COME BACKS ( I’m talkin’ Kate Moss Who ? type of come back ) but I need the powers that be ( Clive Davis, etc. ) to know that I (and many others as well) DON’T want to see Whitney shake nothin from “left to right.” … She does not need to compete w/ Beyonce, etc. she is not 25 ! She just needs to be Whitney ! (and Whitney has NEVA, and I do mean NOT NEVA) needed a whole bunch beats (Swizz’s or’NOT) to cover the the essences of who she is ! WHITNEY!

Jorge what are you smoking? This is classic Whitney and music at its best. The 70’s and 80’s were THE BEST! And Whitney is bringing her best on this record! It’s a fun track that everyone of all ages can enjoy. She ain’t talkin about poppin her booty or whatever you’re talking about when you said she sang left right. It’s more of a groove or hand wave “throw yo hands in the air” type of thing. Come on now don’t be so naive. She’s singing about a guy who makes her wanna just dance, turn around, sing etc. Obviously people like you are too ignorant to understand that.
Anyway Whitney I adore you and the music you’re putting out on the airwaves. I bought two copies already and everybody should too! August 31st! This is Whitney’s year!!!

First lol @ Diary of an Overrated Cougar” …
I am actually feeling this. A lot… RT It sounds like Spotlight with Jennifer Hudson but Jennifer was being whitney houston on spotlight so I guess this was the song that spotlight was suppose to be.
Whitney really sounds well and I can wait to hear her do it live, which is where the magic should go down. Im kinda geeked that I am hearing new houston music and I am really glad she made it back. Michael didnt. I have been in music mourning for a minute but if anyone can get me out to buy music again its Houston. Welcome back boo. Its time.

I love how Jorge is trying to explain to everyone what Whitney truly is.
LOL! Have you met Whitney?
She was The Pop Princess. Number 1 in all categories.
She doesn’t need anyone telling her who she is or what kind of music she should make.
If you don’t like it when an artist switches it up …Switch to another artist. Your heart and Ears will go on …
Jorge, I encourage you to continue to keep it “real” but be careful you might wind up looking real foolish.
The song sounds great. I’m excited for Whitney!
Drugs never stopped an artist from being great.

August 7, 2009 at 2:45 am
Well, she certainly sings the song better than Alicia Keys would have, but the electricity factor isn’t there for me…good effort though. I’m looking forward to the next album. You will recall that it took Natalie Cole about three albums to really get her mojo back. Pulling for you, Nippy.

O my..I had such high hopes for this album but I must say..that this was only okay. I’m not feeling that old school beat..roller skating ring-ISH type thing going on. Her voice sounds good though, but none of the songs she has put out showcases anything magical that use to be Whitney. Several artists of today can outsing her at this point. So I shall not compare her to her old self…I shall only say that this isn’t AMAZING..it’s NOT…let’s be real. It’s good..but not amaZing. With that being said I shall get her album because she is sounding really good but right now I’m more curious to see what Mariah has to offer because so far..Whitney’s material isn’t suitable for airplay. She needs more. I thought I would hear some SANGING. I hope Mariah does some sanging..im so tired of this false representation of music. All tricks and beats with no voice to stand on it’s own. O well, I’ll jam Chrisette Michelle and Jennifer Hudson.. for now..cause that’s an example of what music and sanging is!

With great producers working on this album, I think this will be a disappointment.

THIS SONG IS WAY BETTER THAN THOSE OTHER TWO SONGS , DIDN’T KNOW MY OWN STRENGHT AND I LOOK TO YOU. STILL IT JUST AIN’T THAT DRAMATIC UNDENYABLE COMEBACK WE WERE ALL LOOKING FOR.
AND WHAT YA’LL TALKING BOUT WILLIS… ALICIA KEYS AND SWIZZ BEATS ARE TOGETHER??? ALICIA WROTE A GOOD ONE. BUT WHITNEY’S VOICE SOUNDS LIKE SHE JUST STOPPED SMOKING CRACK AN HOUR OR TWO BEFORE THE RECORDING SESSION. NO HIGH NOTES AT ALL. CLIVE DAVIS DONE LOST HIS MIND, THIS ALBUM IS ABOUT TO BE GARBAGE. AND WHY PICK AN OLD R. KELLY SONG AS YOUR COMEBACK BALLAD?? R’ KELLY??? OF ALL PEOPLE!!!!!!! WHAT ARE THEY DOING OVER AT THAT LABEL??? U PEOPLE REALLY SUCK. AND WERE IS THE VIDEO? All I can say is Wowzer. Are Diva is back and getting more fierce with each single. I’m really glad Whitney is mixing up the styles not keeping with same tempo and genres. I think this album is really going to be a stepping stone for Whitney. True fans will enjoy the sounds of are Diva. People that are dissing Whitneys new sound need to wake up and smell the roses. This is going back to her true talent, giving us new sounds. I see really good things out of this Album. Love ya Whitney, keep going Baby!!!

I like it, B. Scott. I don’t expect Whitney to be as fabulous as she once was, but with ALL she has been through, this is a great Summer/Fall Jam with an old-school feel. She can still put some of these younger singers to bed with their pop-tart squeaks. Good for Alicia Keys for penning this one.

August 8, 2009 at 10:10 am
Positives — good ol’ school vibe to it, fun track… good album track, very upbeat and positive… which is good to see from Whitney
Negatives — the vocals are just middle of the road, couple of good runs here but you can hear the damage to her vocal chords
Overall, i think this is a good album track… but not a good 1st single. So far… the “leaked” songs and this one don’t bode well for the album… not expecting “I Will Always Love You”… but expecting a track that puts Whitney front and center w/o the bells and whistles. I’m still hopeful that the album will have better tracks then the three released so far. (Still on Team Whitney!)
P.s. — what does Mariah have to do w/ this thread at all… people are still on that MC vs Whitney crap… and the funny thing is… they don’t compare… MC = excellent singer/songwriter/legend, Whitney = excellent singer/legend. both are extremely talented and there’s nothing wrong w/ supporting both… just like some people need to learn the difference between constructive criticism and HATING!
ACE
August 8, 2009 at 1:16 pm
So I SEE the MC vs WH battle continues lol. Someone asked why the album cover jack? Answer: Whitney shot her pics first with the photographer Mariah got the same photographer… look it up. These two ladies respect each other so lets respect that please DAMN!
Now to the song…
ITS A CETIFIED BANGA! Swizz and A.Keys did this one there – I hope that this isnt the last time they work together(WE ALL KNOW THEY DOING SOMETHING ELSE TOGETHER HEHEHE) HOWEVER I love this freaking song “I’ve been looking I’ve been searching ” she eats it. YES vocally she sounds different but u cant say she can’t sing… cuz she is definately killing this. IF THIS DOESNT GO TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS then People are deaf

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WHITNEY…today is her 46th Bday and I want to congradutlate her on an AWESOME track. I must admit, I have been a Whitney fan for life, but I didnt have high hopes. Like many, I worried that she would not be able to pull it together to get another good album out. Her voice isnt what it was 20 years ago cuz…ITS BEEN 20 YEARS! Mariah, Celine, Toni, Aretha, Barbra…NONE of them sound the same. Mariah cant sing in full chest voice anymore to save her life, and Celine’s power is about half what it was.
But thats okay…it happens…anyone who sings knows this. Great voice is a fleeting precious thing, so we must cherish it. But even so, she sounds awesome, and still outsings juts about every other female in the game now.
This song brought me to reality. Its such a feel good, upbeat and light song, just what we needed to hear. Its so catagorically different than the same old tired RnB riffing that has been mainstreamed. I cant get that damn chorus outa my head and find myself singing it at work. She has stepped back into the light…lets welcome her.
To the haters…okay, I know that many fans of OTHER artists have always been a little defensive, since their artists have been in the shadow of Whitney since the start…but really, let it go. MC fans especially…I loved Mariah, though her last two albums are shit…but I own all the others. They love each other…so drop it. This complex they all have isnt sexy.

I love Whitney and I’m soooo glad to hear she’s back! I’m a bootlegger, but I think i’m going to buy this album NO DOUBT. Gotta support her. She was the best singer of our time hands DOWN!!! She has a better track titled “salute” written by R Kelly. Here’s the demo. Check it out. I think this is better; good lyrics and contemporary mid tempo RnB cut.

Uh oh. This won’t be popular, but I don’t really like it. There’s no heart in it. Sounds like she just sang the words and said, “print it!” Maybe a dance remix would do it some good, but in it’s current form…yawn. SOOOOO glad she’s back, tho. Hope she writes a book about “it all.”

She needs to sing about her life and what she has been through. That will have her back where she needs to be. Her recovery will always be the elephant in the room if she doesnt sing about it. I think it would be great therapy for her as well as her fans but don’t sweep it under the rug and act like it never happened. What do you think about that idea Bscott. Love ya baby.

August 23, 2009 at 5:48 am
I think the major point that is being overlooked is that Whitney Houston does not have to prove anything to anyone. If she sat down and never recorded another song, she has done more than most. I am not talking strictly CD sales…I am talking successful attempts at acting (not to talk poorly of other artists, but who else had a hit movie AND a hit soundtrack…can anyone say Bodyguard?) Whitney Houston is a mother and was a wife for many years, her music will not, should not sound like Beyonce, Mariah Carey, et al. All of their experiences are different. There is something to be said about women (men also for that matter) who grow old gracefully…who understand that at 45+, they should probably not being wearing spandex dresses. Not because they would not look bad in it, but because, it just is really not appropriate. The song is great. I feel the retro vibe. I think she was on point throughout. I think most people who are disappointed with her new project are because of unrealistic expectations. As someone said, crack or not, older or not, she can still sing 95% of the singers under a bus. She does not have to dance to distract you from subpar singing. She can stand there, and sweat and sing and make you shake your head at what you are hearing. Stop and think of her appeal: universal and still very strong. Let’s admit it. If her appeal wasn’t still viable, we wouldn’t even be waiting on her new release. Congrats Whitney! I hope it just keeps getting better!

I don’t like the song, but hey I’ve never liked her pop/R&B songs, so…whatever. That still does not take away from the fabulosity of the Diva!! I will always love you Whitney.
