I’m surprised at this. At this very moment, I think Jordin Sparks’ “Battlefield” is better than this. I’m just not feeling the song, sorwi.
Love ya B.

i’m rooting for Whitney. really. but even on a studio track, her voice sounds very strained. and that makes me sad. i know she would have lost some of the purity over time……but i don’t know….this just feels sad.
best of luck Whit. you will be supported, regardless.

Thanks for posting! You’re the best, B. Scott. Would love to chat with you on twitter sometimes! I’ve been waiting to hear this for a while now. This song get a 7 out of 10 from me. I like it, however I was expecting much, much better. But this is good enough. Go Whitney!

Im sure this will end up on a Tyler Perry Movie Soundtrack. I liken this song to many of the songs that Brandy have on her “Human” album. Sometimes, singers just need songs that they can relate too, and for Whitney this song is it. I can’t knock her efforts. But, to play devils advocate, this is not a great comeback song. I think she shouldve hopped on the Autotune train and had T-Pain do something for her. I’d love to hear Whitney on the Autotune.
I do have to give props to her for trying tho….its still just not the same. I wonder if her time is up…:(.
I have to concur with a Comedian that said, ” Instead of Jay-Z rapping about death to Autotune, there are a lot of things he could have talked about death too. One, should be death to OLD ass artist who don’t know when to stop”.
In this case, this is it. Sowwie.

Lost touch with my soul
I had no where to turn
I had no where to go
Lost sight of my dream,
Thought it would be the end of me
I thought I’d never make it through
I had no hope to hold on to,
I thought I would break
I didn’t know my own strength
And I crashed down, and I tumbled
But I did not crumble
I got through all the pain
I didn’t know my own strength
Survived my darkest hour
My faith kept me alive
I picked myself back up
Hold my head up high
I was not built to break
I didn’t know my own strength
Found hope in my heart,
I found the light to life
My way out the dark
Found all that I need
Here inside of me
I thought I’d never find my way
I thought I’d never lift that weight
I thought I would break
I didn’t know my own strength
And I crashed down, and I tumbled
But I did not crumble
I got through all the pain
I didn’t know my own strength
Survived my darkest hour
My faith kept me alive
I picked myself back up
Hold my head up high
I was not built to break
I didn’t know my own strength
There were so many times I
Wondered how I’d get through the night I
Thought took all I could take
I didn’t know my own strength
And I crashed down, and I tumbled
But I did not crumble
I got through all the pain
I didn’t know my own strength
Survived my darkest hour
My faith kept me alive
I picked myself back up
Hold my head up high
I was not built to break
I didn’t know my own strength

I hear a GRAMMY Award and stunning LIVE performances coming on
for this.
Whitney bares her soul on this track. Her vocals are strong but very
classy and humble.
It’s nice to hear “real music” without the Autotune and insecure 40 yr. old
sex kitten stuff ala Mariah Carey.
I just read the autobiography by Bin Laden’s sex slave where she revealed
so much about Bin Laden’s obsession with Whitney Houston. Great book! Lots of stuff in there about Whitney Houston’s impact on young sisters (even in Africa that I never thought about), so I’m really rooting for Whitney to have a comeback. She deserves it.
I’m proud to know that Whitney means so much to women all around the
world, because honestly, she’s BIGGER THAN RADIO. She’s a cultural
icon and the Bin Laden mistress book proved that to me.
Based on this leak, I bet the CD is totally classic.
Can’t wait for “Mill Dollar Bill” (written by Alicia Keys).
Whitney Houston is BACK!

This proves that she can still sing. That’s the first step. With some great writers (T-Pain, Ryan Tedder, etc.) she has an awesome opportunity. I really can’t wait to see what comes next. She’s planted the comeback seed. She’s proven that she can still sing. Many of today’s popstars can’t even hold a light to this performance.
I hope Whit has the intention of throwing her voice through some awesome, progressive pop production.
That’s when the number ones will come again.

what happend?? I’m fine with ballads, but you need an upbeat song to make sure EVERYONE knows that Ms.Whitney Houston is BACK and HERE to stay! I was hoping she’d belt out high vocals and make you wanna dance, but mission failed
Still love you Whitney! I guess the song has to grow on me!

I think it’ll be hot on Gospel charts and AC, but i dont think its worth being first single
lol @ Bscott for promoting Mariah’s new single “Obsessed” haha u got that from MDJ, i know you be representing us Lambs haha get it!!!
I’m looking forward to Whitney coming back, i’m so tired of this mediocre music that is out now, i dont even listen to the radio unless i know Mariah is releasing new music or a few artist maybe like 3 others but thats it,
radio today plays same songs ever 5 mins!
Adrienne
July 2, 2009 at 7:48 pm
I’m somewhat disapppointed in this. U can judge Mariah all u want but even her bad live performances are better than this. And she evolved with the times, Whitney can’t pull off too many up tempo songs like she can AS well as ballads. I mean let’s just look at how many up tempo songs and ballads alike that she’s had at #1, Mariah knows what she’s doing. I thought Whitney would come better since it’s been so long…. I miss the old Whitney… It’s over for her…

July 2, 2009 at 8:02 pm
I like Whitney, but this song is so.. um.. bland? I doubt this is the first single. This is not even good enough to be an album filler. Her voice sounds shot on this track. I’m sure she can do better. If she doesn’t come harder, this is not going to be the epic comeback we were all hoping for. Hmm.

July 2, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Sounds great!
My guess is that those who are disappointed a probably 30 and under. This is actually classic Whitney (although, i agree, her voice has lost some of its purity), and I love it!
LuvHer
July 2, 2009 at 8:30 pm
i’ve listened to it several times now, and it just is not growing on me. i agree, her vocals are rather reigned in….but when she does reach for the higher ones, her voice is strained.
but she has nothing to worry about…..her album’s going to sell simply b/c she’s Whitney Freakin’ Houston. and she will most likely garner Grammy’s too, b/c again…..she’s Whitney Freakin’ Houston.
if this is the single that’s supposed to show us she still has it, then the target has been missed. however, if this is just the single to show us she refuses to go quietly into the night, BINGO!!
good luck sweetheart.

July 2, 2009 at 9:10 pm
She had the greatest voice and that is just too much to live up to. The song is not bad, but this is Whitney and people expect perfection, even though she is 46 and has smoked cigarettes most of her life. She may have smoked more than that. Mariah has never been able to touch Whitney in voice, poise, beauty, and live performance. She is putting out bubble gum songs that Rhianna should be trying to sing and using autotune at that. Mariah has always had stage fright and rarely gives a good live performance. Whitney has many on tape singing live and tearing the shit up. You can never take that away from her.

I can sympathize with Whitney, as a singer myself, as we age we lose our lung capacity and it requires more deep breathing to pull those notes from our diaphrams. However, on the down side of things…if they were no smoking involved Whitney’s voice would have been stronger to date. In any event, I will always love Whiteny since she has inspired me to sing. There has never been and I don’t ever anyone that will influence me vocally as she has.
NathanHWilliams
July 2, 2009 at 9:40 pm
This is a classic Whitney song. Her voice actually sounds better than it has sounded in a while. Most importantly, it’s what good music is made of…a talented singer, amazing lyrics, great music and production. We’re so used to the over produced garbage we hear on the radio, I think we’ve forgotten what real music is. I’m glad she’s not pandering to the lowest common denominator on this one as I felt on the leaked Akon song…Whitney Houston should NEVER sing with Akon. I don’t care if her voice sounds like sandpaper.
With that said, this probably NOT the first single. But, a strategically leaked song to show that she’s given you Whitney on this album for the hardcore fans. She hasn’t released a ballad or midtempo as the lead single since the first album. (You Give Good Love)
We’re waiting with baited breath for Sept 1st.

Nice lyrics however Whitney’s vocals are shot. This is a far cry from her earlier work (i.e. Bodyguard, Preacher’s Wife, etc) for which I was hoping for with a comeback album from Whitney. I just wanted her to lay the haters to rest but unfortunately she didn’t do it with this song. I know that her voice is weak and she’s been through a lot but most people liked Whitney because of her amazing vocals but it’s no where to be found on this song. Sorry Whit Whit…Just keeping it honest. Fantasia would have tore this song up though. I’m just saying LOL!

I URGE everyone to keep in mind this is a LEAKED track.
I am sure the final track will be fFIRE.
But THIS LEAKED track gives us enough of a feeling of the NEW Whtiney.
And imo her voice is beautiful, the song is meaningful and relatable.
Makes me wanna holla and yearn for more….I love YOU Whitney Houston.

I love the message behind this song, but I don’t think I would label it a comeback song. I agree with some others, it sounds a bit dated. Her voice sounds VERY strained on this song, and it really isn’t a hard song and there are no high notes. I hope her voice isn’t really this weak.

Whitney’s already cemented herself as the greatest female voice out there. She doesn’t have to have a comeback album because she’s Whitney Houston. She’s the female voice that we measure other females on. Whitney at the pinnacle of her career face succeeded any of these younger talents voice to voice.

July 3, 2009 at 12:08 pm
OKAY 1ST I expected this, really I did. However I cant say she sounds bad because she doesn’t – and compared to Mariah, she definately still sounds a lot better than the Lamb. Im comparing this album really to MJB’s LOVE&LIFE; when Mary got off drugs and decided to get back to getting her voice together she wasnt ALL the way there on L&L however by the time THE BREAKTHROUGH came she was exactly where she needed to be and got better. Whitneys voice has definately changed but I dont think for the worst I think she’ll be able to convey a different emotion now and she’ll indeed get better with time.

I’ve listened to this song about 5 times already. The first time around, I thought it was decent and W sounded good. It’s got a very good message.
Now I can see myself sitting and rocking through the hard times to this track. The Phoenix will rise, always rise. Love me some Whitney.
I’m wishing her all the best with her future work. Diane Warren is an A-list songwriter. This is well crafted but may not have all the passion and some of the rhythms are little off-putting. It’ll grow on you though because of the Voice and the message.

Ok first and Foremost, I am beyond proud of Whitney.
For she has come a VERY long way. She is like Another Michael
Jackson to the black community. She’s beyond talented, and deeply loved.
If you really grew up listening to Whitney Houstons music. Then you
KNOW this is a TRUE DIVA. And as she states in this song, she has struggled,
she has hit ROCK bottom. But has survived.
I’m not being racist but if you white ppl can sit and listen to Ozzie Freakin Osburne raspy, gibberish ass. Then you can most def appreciate this ladys struggle and this comeback song she’s putting out.
And what’s up with the Autotunes comments.
Clearly you young turds dont know what REAL music is.

I think this is a great comeback song for Whitney. For those saying Whitney needs to work with Tpain, lol, or she needs an uptempo track, are you serious? Obviously you don’t own a Whitney Houston album or have ever heard a song by her before? Whitney needs to stay true to who she is and what made her a star.

July 3, 2009 at 9:12 pm
hmm, lightweight disappointed that 1, this was the “comeback single” sounds more like a album track, or something off a soundtrack 2, that Diane Warren wrote this.. doesnt sound like her style at all to me (what ya’ll think?) and 3, that she didnt showcase her vocal capabilities more. I dunno maybe it’ll grow on me, but at first listen I kind of expected more.

I think the song is a nice song for someone who hasn’t been in the spotlight in a long time. There aren’t any “power” notes, but the song is simple enough that she didn’t need to do that – It would have ended up being oversung. Good job, Whitney!

I like the lyrics, the message is right on point but vocally, NO. I mean she sounds worse than she did on the “Just Whitney” album. I love Whitney and applaud her finally putting something out other than that mess she did with Akon “Like I Never Left”. I know I am going to be called a hater, but this is not it. It will sell and for her sake I hope it does but vocally its sad. Her soprano is completely gone. Maybe once she gets comfortable with her new range the songs and the vocals will get better is all i can hope for. It just makes me sad. But good looking out for Clive Davis putting this song out at this time.

for all the naysayers: i would love to see you even try to sing a whitney houston and see how difficult it would be to keep the pitch, her modulations and the inverting. try to sing along with this song and see the difficulty it would be for you to sing along, ha! congrats whit! this is just the beginning. she is going to demolish the charts especially since the death of a great legend michael jackson and to have another legend emerge from such a difficult addiction she is a pioneer. this song will help other people that are dealing with self esteem issues and the like. at least she is empowering the tenacity of the human spirit vs. singing these anthem songs ie beyonce. this song will help someone else besides herself. great job whit. love, love, love ya! b

Seriously, the hate needs to stop. The message and emotion in this song is too good for all of that.
Vocally, yes, maybe Whitney isn’t where she would be if she stayed clean, but that’s the POINT of this song, listen to it.
But the people saying she sounds BAD…wow, clearly you don’t know what GOOD music sounds like. Vocally, Whitney still sounds better than 95% of the bitches with recording contracts right now. Whitney’s strength has always been making the most difficult and complex vocal acrobatics seem simple and neat. It’s why so many singers on American Idol attempt her songs and end up sounding like crap, because they’re a lot harder than they first appear.
I’d like to see someone duplicate the minute vocal runs and phrasing Whitney pulls off at the end of a line in this song. The tenderness and emotion in her phrasing. Hell, as a singer I’m actually surprised at the amount of vocal control Whitney possesses after all the strain she put her voice through. Anyone with any technical singing skill would know that Whitney sounds great here.
And to the person who said her Soprano is gone. Listen to the last minute of her song. She is still DEFINITELY in the Soprano range. Just because she’s not hitting one long powerful note doesn’t mean she’s lost her range. Some of her runs actually start pretty high and solidly in Soprano.
This is a tender song, and not one meant to be blown out with over singing. Hell, it’s written by Diana Warren, who was never known for belting, herself. But if you listen, that magic is there.
Is Whitney at her “I Will Always Love You” peak? Probably not. But her instrument is still there, and after more time working with it she’ll be back in top shape.
The sad thing is so many of the younger generations have gotten used to sloppy singing. Singer like Keisha Cole hitting scratchy, sloppy, untrained high notes in an attempt to prove they have sole. Just because they can and not because it fits. Whitney comes from an era where phrasing and delivery were more important than hitting a high note just to show off…even though she definitely did her fair share of that.

The raspy tone form years of bad living is quite evident. She has lost the pureness and unique sound of her voice. Although the song is good she unfortunately the great tone and quality of “I Will Always Love You” will not happen again for her. She should have retired.
This is yet another good example of why if you want to be a singer should not do drugs. Everyone deserves a second chance so I wish her good luck.

What made whitney so special was the strength and clarity of her voice. These things are lacking here, but it is an inspirational song.

i think it’s so hypocritical of people to jump on Whitney’s “raspiness…and vocal impurity” as pure musical genius….claiming she’s added a new texture/tone to her voice.
i bet these were the same people to go on & on about how other singers have lost “it”. lol. jokes.
you can’t have it both ways. either they have a new texture and tone or Whitney’s lost it.

Love Whitney, but the production is dated, and Diane Warren is the most generic songwriter out there. We needed something more along the lines of “My Love is Your Love” or “Heartbreak Hotel” if a slower song was going to lead. Again, love Whitney, but this song is a disappointment — it has less to do with her voice (which is not even close to what it once was, but that is old news) and more to do with the lame collaborators. David Foster was great in the 80s and 90s, but he is no longer relevant in today’s music scene. (And please don’t say that horrendously cheesy “Notes to God” song indicates that he and Diane are talented. All their songs sound the same. Yawn.) Much love to The Voice, though. She looks incredible, and let’s hope the rest of the album is better.

We don’t have to expect more the soprano singing of the early years, but a resilient voice affected by life.
Thank you Whitney.

I am a die-hard Whitney fan. When I first heard the song, I was disappointed because I could still hear the raspiness in her voice. However, the more I listen to it, the more I like it. I have to stop comparing today’s Whitney to the Bodyguard Whitney. I think the most important thing to remember is that we almost lost Whitney forever, but now she is coming back healthy, happy and strong. I will never count her out–let’s give her a chance.I will always love and support her, because she is a one-of-a-kind talent.

We have to support her. People age – the voice age.
However, she is more experienced right now and she has more to say, listen to her message, not her voice. Even though she dosen’t sound as good, she still much better than many of the current artists out there.
Whitney, keep taking care of you! We wanna listen to you forever. Your voice is in your hands, not ours. You have to take care of it because we want more!!!
He Y'all
July 7, 2009 at 2:04 am
Y’all make it sound like Whitney is the worst singer out today. Truth be told, she is better than about 95% of these hoes who got record deals from sucking and fucking these producers and writers for beats and song lyrics. This song does sound dated as hell and the lyrics are cliche for a comeback artist, but this should have been expected. Whitney isn’t known to follow trends like Mariah and Madonna. She knows her lane. Her voice doesn’t sound the same. DUH! Have you heard her recent live performances compared to her performances in her prime? This is nothing new. We all know the crack fucked up Whitney’s voice, just like the corona fucked up Mariah’s. Y’all was really expecting this lady to be hitting high notes everywhere? Such dummies! Her voice isn’t that bad, and I’m actually impressed. I was expecting a bunch of pitch problems. Her voice is gritty now, which takes away from the song, but it is what it is. This isn’t the first single, peoples. Someone at her label said that it was leaked and it was one of the front-runners for the first single because THEY liked it. This is just a teaser.

Whitney is back with a bang! she doesn’t say much. Her voice is her weapon, and she hasn’t to show off her boops like Mariah SCarey to sell records! The album will be great.Live with that, otherwise go listen to Rihanna or,even worse,Mariah(who,by the way, sounds like a transvestite Kanye West on her new single!!)
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE WHITNEY!
July 11, 2009 at 5:34 am
I LOVE WHITNEY TO NO END BUT, I have to say……, and I am NOT being hateful,….. just HONEST. The drugs fucked up her voice too much. I am SOOOO SAD about this because WHITNEY was the TOP! But through HER OWN ACTIONS she ruined her voice. ANYONE that knows ANYTHING about music knows that “I DIDN’T KNOW MY OWN STRENGTH” is a VERY easy song to sing. She didn’t change octaves or ANYTHING like she used to and she still sounded strained. Don’t get me wrong, I am glad she is back doing what she loves, BUT I wouldn’t pay to see her in concert cause SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SING HER OLD TUNES WITHOUT SERIOUSLY COMPROMISING THEM. She’s got an octave at best! VERY SAD!

He who have no faults cast the first stone. The song is very much representative of where she is now and the “wow” factor is the healing itself that is felt through the song particularly at this date and time in so many peoples lives. Prayerfully and lovingly of healing from the inside out…..

Not Whitney’s best at all. I would have expected a little more from her. The track is good, the vocals are horrible. Her range has been masked and the strength of her voice is clearly not there. The song has a nice melody and maybe it will get some air time because it’s Whitney Houston, but it is not a #1 single by a long shot! I would have loved to hear something with an upbeat
tempo for her first release….praying for you Ms Whitney, I know its in you. You have always been one of the GREATEST…

I’m rooting for Whitney. I like the song because it speaks to what she went through. It does sadden me to hear how her voice has been “altered” as a result of her drug use.
I’m defintely going to buy. Love Jordin Sparks but she hasn’t been through any trials so it’s not a fair comparison. That’s not to say she will. Again I lover her love her lover her(Jordin) but she couldn’t hold a candle to Whitney when Whitney was her age and innocent:-)

I LIKE THE SONG…LOVE WHIT…
BUT WTF IS WRONG with all you “kids” thinking ANY jordin sparks song or vocalization could be better than ANYTHING ms. houston has EVER done.
first of all, jordin, jonas bros, miley and all of those other kids that are only popular because they attract, tweens and teens are NOT realy artists…second, this is WHITNEY HOUSTON…
get over yourselves and give her some credit, classic music is NOT T-Pain, or TI or even taylor swift…
THIS IS WHITNEY…AND IF SHE NEEDS MORE TIME TO COMEBACK…THEN LET HER BRING IT ON!

Although I love Whitney, this song is not a good representation of this awesome artist regardless of her voice. I truly belive that choosing Diane Warren was a mistake. This woman is a proven good writer but is obviously out of touch with contemporary music. there are so many great writers out there who could have created a better song than this. I really do not care if Whitney never makes another album or sings like she did for us in her prime. My concern is that she is healthy, alive, and looking toward the future as a functioning human being. She is the best and always will be! I love you Whitney!!

Whitney, I am so proud of you. I like Jordan Sparks, but she will never be a Whitney Houston. Whitney has surpassed insurmountable odds to get where she is today. Not many people in her industry could do it. However, Natalie Cole did. Kudos to them both. I love you Whitney.

I Didn’t Know My Own Strength…. a beautiful and moving song. Especially owing to what we all know regarding the things she’s gone through. And we probably don’t know the half of it. The stirring words were rendered perfectly and she didn’t sacrifice the meaning of the words to over-singing.
Diane Warren is a true wordsmith…and Whitney did her words perfect justice.
This song made me listen more closely to the rest of the album.
Beautiful song.

It is a beautiful song. Whitney still has a decent voice but I kept waiting for the range. It wasn’t there on this one. I could, also, hear the raspiness in her vocal chords; sort of like a smokers voice. Though, I was a little disappointed, I believe her next album will be better.
The thing I was disappointed in was this quote, ” Instead of Jay-Z rapping about death to Autotune, there are a lot of things he could have talked about death too. One, should be death to OLD ass artist who don’t know when to stop”. I will be so glad when chivalry is reborn and respect for women returns. Female artist or male artist, regardless of their age, regardless of what they may have lost in their ability to preform (and this is only in a person’s opinion), should never be referred to in theses disrespectful terms. Just as all of us have a right to give our opinions and make our comments, every artist has the right to return to their profession whether they make it or not. That is the chance they take. Whitney has the backing. So, someone believed in her and she believes in herself. For that, I commend her, especially, after all she has been through. If for only that and that alone, I say, “Go girl!!!!!!!”

No maam. I don’t like the song at all…it is bland and boring…everyone knows her past situations were hard, but does every song on the album have to be about her drub abuse and how she survived. Booh, no one put you in that situation..you did it to yourself…you took a gift God gave you and didn’t appreciate it. You buried your talent and now its gone. Her range, her tonations…we all knew her for her runs and rifts. Nothing…its gone…I used to be a huge Whitney fan..I know all of her songs…everyone…But, I will not be buying this CD.

I LOVE Whitney Houston. Her voice carries the abuse she has suffered at her own and her ex-husband’s hand.
I’m glad she is singing again… I guess it’s naive to expect her to sound as free as is did 20 years ago. But, Congrats to the NEW Whitney. I still miss the pre-Bobby Brown Whitney.

In my opinion, this is the kind of song that would make me back my car out of the garage after arriving home to drive around the block to hear it in its entirety. I agree with an earlier comment which states that Whitney isn’t interpreting the lyrics…she is delivering what she has lived. That’s right…the HBIC is back dammit and I’m glad.

I was going to suggest Whitney come back with a strong version of BEAUTIFUL but this is very nice because it’s more original. You go girl–welcome back. However (there’s always an honest butt). Her voice sounds worn–It does not have the purity it did. But her voice was so great to begin with ANYone can overlook slight flaws that come with age and abuse. If we didn’t know what she has been through we would think she still sounds better than many young singers out there. My prayers are with Whitney to recover!

My mom always told me, “when someone gives you a GIFT you accept graciously and tell them thank you.” Ms. Houston your music is a GIFT to me and I say “thank you.” You sing any song you want, whenever you want, however you want. You own the song! and if anyone else thinks they can sing it better, well let them sing it!
The public does not own you. You don’t owe us anything! Ms. Houston, you have done your 40 days and 40 nights and are here to sing about it. Any gift of song you want to share I am willing to accept. My heart is elated that you made it through and have come back to us a whole woman, a whole human being. Go on and tell us about it! xo Scott

He who is without sin cast the first stone.. this is for all of you who are pointing fingers at whitney… and i am very sure none of you can sing as she was singing then and defenitely not now. when she was up and running everybody was behind her.. she made mistakes and suddenly people convert into god passing judgement.. put yourself in her shoes how would you feel .. won’t you want the support from the fans that once loved you? come on humans!!!! give her a break.. at least she had the courage to stand up and admit she made mistakes … how much you are that honest to yourself. god is is the only judge and jury… leave that up to him. Most of us to relate to her songs at some point in our life… it is motivating.. and no matter what mistakes we make(big or small) a mistake is a mistake. so whitney you go girl.. i will always love… you have been and inspiration to me from small and you continue to be.. another legend.. Are we gonna wait till she is no more like what we did michael to appreciate her and the music she produced? Don’t let mistakes destroy the good she brought to us in the past and what she is bringing now
