June 29, 2009 Beyonce At BET Awards & On Tour!

I was in the audience as Beyonce performed onstage at the 2009 BET Awards at the Shrine Auditorium on Sunday night in Los Angeles and let me tell you she worked it out! Even though I would have loved to see her do a more upbeat performance, her rendition of “Ava Maria’ was divine. In other Beyonce news: take a listen to Beyonce paying homage to the King Of Pop while she performed one of her favorite songs “I Can’t Help It” from his Off The Wall album during her stop Philadelphia on her I Am… tour along with pictures after the jump.

I truely appreciate Beyonce’s talent but that performance was strange and boring! She could have done a passionate version of Halo and for the mercy of Allah…that frock was awful! I guess, I was dissapointed the performance was neither here nor there…she could have done a Jackson five song….eitherway..zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Whackest performance at the BET AWARDS, she should’ve stayed ON TOUR and gave the people who paid to see her and stop boring those who didn’t with her nonsense. That performance was uncalled for the costume change and all that.

if only she wouldve made the tribute at the BET awards. For some reason it seemed like the performance was all about her and not in Michael’s memory. She’s getting tiring already. Everyone had a little bit of MJ in their performances but her. And why did she perform that song in what looks like a bathing suit with wings.

I understand that people wanted her to do a tribute to Michael but she’s a performer herself and there are fans that want to see her perform her own work. She sent out a wonderful statement about the impact that Michael had on her career and in her life as a child. The performance was more than likely to promote her tour seeing as though it’s staged exactly the same as the tour version of Ave Maria.

I have mixed feelings on this one, on one hand it was a tribute song to Micheal Jackson OBVIOUSLY but on the other hand……I guess Sasha took a seat to this one, and that dress makes her look like Glenda- the good witch of the north.

Beyonce looked so very crazy and out of place last night when she performed last night. The entire time I watched it I was wondering what the heck is this all about.

I’m sorry I like Beyonce but her rendition of Ave Maria was strange at the BET Awards. I think her rendition of it is beautifal but WTF to the leotard and wedding veil. I wish she would have performed Ego. I heart that song.

After reading the comments above, it’s funny how people will criticize her, while not knowing the origination of “Ave Maria” and what it means.
I’m a huge Beyonce fan, but what I’m about to say applies to everyone who works HARD. Beyonce has worked her way to the top and cares about her fans and others, but the ultimate decisions of what she does is up to her.
She can’t please everyone to do an upbeat song “every-time” she performs. “Ave Maria,” the song she performed, is one of her beautiful ballads on her “I Am… Sasha Fierce” Album and is pure lovely for those who previously listen to the song.
Lastly, I don’t comment when people have negative things to say. However, in the essence of the passing of Michael Jackson and her performance choice at the BET Awards, people could at least be more compassionate.

Beyonce’s performance was very odd…it was all about her & not about MJ. There were a million other songs she could have sang. The mega-tutu, the tiara & wedding veil….I didn’t know what the h*ll was going on! She probably would have lifted everyones spirit by doing single ladies/ego/diva!

I really think B’s performance would have been better at the grammy’s not BET. On her tour she sang one of Michael’s songs and I feel she should of did that, instead of that mess Ava Maria, which she butchered.

The people that are making these negative comments about Beyonce’s performance last night obviously don’t understand the concept. If you’ve ever heard “Angel” by Sarah McLaughlin, you’d know it’s a song about someone passing away! Therefore, that in itself was a beautiful tribute to Michael Jackson. She even sang a snippet of the original Ave Maria, which is a spiritual song! So people, before you hate, do your God damn research! Thank you very kindly!
I think it goes without saying that I thought her performance last night was splendiferously divine and I can’t WAIT to see her on Sunday night in Dallas!

Beyonce is an artist and it was the right choice she made to the song she did on BET! Futhermore, it was classy and right on point. Eveyone can“t be a mess as many things on BET are. Can we say good-bey to MJ in more than one way? I love him and love the song Beyonce sung. Sometime less is more and she gave us more and less and not a mess.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:
Beyonce’s “I am…” Tour costumes are the ugliest things I’ve ever seen.
That wedding lamp-shade dress is particularly horrible.
As for the performance, it was a great vocal but not terribly original or interesting, which is what I think of all her performances. She keeps saying she wants to be an icon, well then she’s in desperate need of originality…

I think anyone that calls Beyonce unoriginal is not truly a fan of hers. Bottomline. Case closed!

chriswell: YOU SAID IT BEST!!! If people would do their research first, then they would be able to criticize, but since they are ignorant about music, they don’t seem to understand it. If she is not shacking her ass or flipping her hair, then Beyonce is boring or she is out place…UMMM, HELL NO!!!
On the other hand, I wish she would have chosen a different ensemble, but that’s okay.
Her performance was amazing and it was on point! And singing the ORIGINAL Ave Maria was so perfect.
GO STUDY SOME MUSIC HISTORY AND THEN COME BACK AND CRITIQUE BEYONCE’S PERFORMANCE!!!

@ Brandon33, I totally agree…. not sure what Bey was going for on THIS particular tour, but the outfits are a hot mess AND I am a HUGE FAN…. however I did not purchase Sasha Fierce. I thought the vids were mediocre this time around.
****************************************************************************************
As for her “tribute” to MJ on the BET awards, a HOT MESS! The performance was about HER and LESS about MJ. I understand the song is about hail mary and prayer. But I believe she should have done a medley of MJ CLASSICS. SMH @ everything that was the BET awards except a few key performances!

I’m sorry but I know what the song meant and it is still a HOT MESS. She should have just stayed on tour. B= FAIL

I thought it was very clear that the song was supposed to show her preparing for her wedding and then finally in an overly dramatized wedding dress… and as I think she did a tribute to him by wearing her Balmain get-up every knows MJJ loves that designer!!!!!
PS… I thought it was a good song choice for her…. it lets people know that there is still talent and actually someone who puts more into their music than just dance moves….

ZZzzzzz….. Her performance was boring, I understand what the song was means and I think alot of people on here do, we were all just expecting more from her. It didn’t help she was wearing that “lamp shade,” as someone put it and that crown, it kinda weirded me out, I was like umm.. wtf?! The show was just a dud, I wish someone would’ve done a dance tribute to MJ

Beyonce’s performance was amazing, her voice was light years ahead of everyone elses.Like most, I did not agree with the outfit choice. However, you cannot deny the PURE TALENT this woman is drenched in.
In my opinion, if you didn’t think her vocals were on point then shame on YOU and your immaturity..

I just can’t take someone’s singing seriously when they are singing Ava Maria in an outfit that looks like a one-piece bathing suit.

As far as Beyonce goes…she definately needs to stop trying to be so outrageous and step her game up to looking more like a super star. Her performing outfits with the hips padding is a definate NO, NO. Her figure does not require any more padding…in fact she could stand to lose a few pounds-if you ask me. All those ugly ass 4 and 5 inch shoes need to go as well. Send some of them free shoes back to the designer with a note enclosed “HELL TO THE NAW”. Also, her weaves haven’t been on point lately…her roots have been looking dry and tired looking. Memo to Beyonce…you need to a good stylist on your team.

Okay, Beyonce is wrapping up a 115 date tour, I doubt she had time to put together and Michael Jackson tribute performance for the BET awards from the time he passed away (Thursday) until the Award show on Saturday. I think everyone was waiting to see what she was gonna do, so I understand the disappointment when she didn’t perform what was anticipated.. I think her performance was amazing she did a great job.. lets cut her a little slack

@ Ashley..how the hell did Beyonce “butcher” the song? Even if you didn’t like the song she performed…her vocals were ON POINT. Please point out to me any singer out there who could sing in another language at the BET awards and sing with such power and grace.
The songs she sang were VERY Appropriate and it was OBVIOUSLY a tribute to Michael. “Angel” was appropriate cause she is praying that his soul is in the arms on A FRIGGIN’ ANGEL!!! DUH!!! And secondly, Ave Maria is one of those songs that sometimes Catholics play at funerals or any type of service in general…
And she had a concert the next day, which I went to. I am 100% SURE that what she sang at the awards was NOT what she planned to sing. She changed her set just for the awards to pay tribute. That whole portion was apart of her tour, that’s why it was easy for her to do it there, costume and all.
You people with the negativity is NOT CULTURED at all. Step outside the norm and try to experience new things that is foreign to you. You’re stuck in the same ol’ not willing to learn new things…STFU. She SOUNDED great, not matter what the song choice was…

@my opinion matters
Have you ever heard AVE MARIA in its original form? If you believe Beyonce’ was ‘on point’ vocally, you obviously haven’t. She doesn’t have the octave range, for one. Take the time to find a true version of the song and then go back and listen. You’ll understand why it was a disappointment to most. It’s because you’re hearing the song, and just as you know the aria is about to begin, it falls flat. It leaves you with an empty feeling. As for Sarah McLachlan’s ‘Angel’, are you going to try to tell us that Beyonce’ sang it better? Sorry, that song IS Sarah. As for her ‘english’ version of Ave Maria, I hate it, I wanted her to do it in the Italian, until she actually did it. As for the lyrics, she didn’t write them. She doesn’t write the songs, she just adds her name to them. It’s common knowledge. Actually, you can just look up any one of her songs, and hers will not be the only name listed as ’songwirter’. I’m not talking ‘producer’ or ‘composer’, just ’songwriter’. This has been known about her for a few years, now. Yet, noone wants to believe it.
If you don’t already know, check out whom the true songwirter/lyricist for HER song ‘Irreplaceable’ really was. Yet, she told the world she wrote it.
She can’t even hold a candle to Aaliyah’s talent, and Aaliyah’s been gone for very close to 8 years. That’s why she wants to shove herself down our throats because she knows Aaliyah still outshines her and she is still trying to come out of her shadow. Too bad for her, the real talents exist: Keyshia Cole, Mary J Blige, Amerie, Ashanti, Monica, Jazmine Sullivan, Jennifer Hudson… she lacks the soul that these ladies embody. She’s too pop (white). She can fake the tears all she wants, but you can’t hear the emotion, and that’s where it counts. That’s what soul is.
As for everyone defending her wedding dress, etc. The whole bit with the robe and the silhouette lighting was really what ruined the routine. It was like she wanted provoke thoughts of nudity. That was what made the whole thing trashy. She couldn’t make up for it once it was trash, it was too late.
And for the Michael Jackson video tribute, why is she half-naked here, too. I think she tries to be Madonna, sometimes. Can’t she ever dress like a lady? Does she always have to come off as a prostitute? At least Madonna would dress in sexy-men’s attire from time to time back in her day. It made her bearable.
Atlhough her ‘wedding scene’ display was MUCH better than Beyonce’s and much more appropriate for the song she was singing.
I’m just saying, Bey’s ass and cooch must STANK from wearing those tight fitting girdle-like body suits she always wears. She never lets the girl breathe. You know she’s wearing a girdle underneath her dresses, too. There’s pics showing she does. After all, her booty never jiggles, so either it ain’t real or she wears a girdle. Fake ass sounds too odd, so I’ll go with the girdle (and a yeast infection or UTI and stankness).

Um I know the meaning behind Ave Maria & yet it was still inappropriate for BET!! If the song wasn’t inappropriate the outfits damn sure were. I do like beyonce but even I was offended. I saw her at this years Essence Festival & people were walking out on her. That might be why she wants people to fight for her. She’s a great entertainer but she needs to take a step back. People r tired of her.
