May 26, 2009 Boxoffice: ‘Smithsonian’ At #1

In what proved to be the interesting winner of the #1 slot at this weekend’s boxoffice, Ben Stiller-driven Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian conquered pole position, finishing the super-sized holiday weekend with an estimated $70 million. Smithsonian marks Stiller’s biggest live-action opening, topping the $46.1 million earned opening weekend for 2004’s Meet The Fockers (this movie is too funny – you must catch if you haven’t already). The first installment of Museum opened in December 2006 with $30.4 million, going on to gross an enviable $251 million domestically.
Sci-fi actioner and fourth installment in the Terminator series, Terminator Salvation didn’t have the gusto to win the top slot, apparently, earning $53.8 million over the three-day frame, $67.2 million in total. The film opened on the lower side of industry expectations, leading some to wonder if Christian Bale’s much-publicized verbal rant may have damaged audience’s predisposed perseptions of the film.
The amazing Star Trek (go check it out!!) was third with $29 million in its third week, good for $191 million. The 11th installment in the franchise is expected to cross the $200 million mark, becoming the year’s biggest film after Monsters Vs. Aliens. Next is Tom Hanks-driven Angels & Demons, bringing home $27.7 million and $89 million in total. Rounding out the top five is Wayans spawn’s Dance Flick, debuting with $13 million.
Any love muffins get a chance to check out Dance Flick? It looks like one of those movies you see when you’re really in the mood to laugh – definitely a good thing.
