May 21, 2009 Billboard: Green Day Breaks Into Top Slot

Love muffins, when I wrote about Enimem returning to the number one spot on the Billboard 200 with Relapse, I meant on next week’s charts, not this week’s – sorry I didn’t make that clearer.
Green Day returns to the top slot with 21st Century Breakdown, selling 215,000 units. What’s significant about this is that the amount sold only reflects sales over a three-day period – the band wanted to have the U.S. release closer to its international release. This is the Berkeley, California-bred band’s second chart topper after 2004’s smash, American Idiot.
The Miley Cyrus machine keeps on goin’ at No. 2 with the Hannah Montana Sountrack selling 68,000 copies. Cam’Ron’s latest debuts in the No. 3 spot with Crime Pays and 43,000, Lady Gaga’s Fame proves it has “legs” by continuing its sales climb at No. 4 and 41,000, at No. 5 is Rascal Flatts’ Unstoppable with 33,000. No. 6 belongs to Bob Dylan’s Together Through Life with 31,000, next is Taylor Swift’s Fearless with 30,000 at No. 7. Last week’s surprise No. 1, Chrisette Michelle’s Epiphany, takes a tumble to No. 8 with 29,000 (down from 83,000…ouch). Rick Ross’ Deeper Than Rap holds down No. 9 with 26,000.
Another big ouch on the Billboard 200 is Ciara’s Fantasy Ride which sees a large 68% decrease with 26,000, down from 81,000 last week.

I had no idea they were had a new album out – I will be spending my money on them. There lyrics are heartfelt – sensible – patriotic – and outspoken.
