May 17, 2009 Box Office: ‘Angels & Demons’ #1

Tom Hanks-driven Angels & Demons placed first at the North American box office this weekend, taking in an estimated $48 million – a bit on the lukewarm side of industry expectations. Internationally, the film fared well, accumulating $104.3 million from 96 territories, for a total worldwide cume of $152.3 million. The film is based on Dan Brown’s book of the same name that introduces the character Robert Langdon, who rose to fame in the film and movie also starring Hanks, 2006’s The Da Vinci Code.
In second place was last week’s top-grosser, the amaaazing Star Trek. As I’ve said before, if you haven’t seen it already, make sure you check out this entertaining summer blockbuster – and splurge on the buttered and salted popcorn. It picked up $43 million for a gross of $147.6 million.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine finished third with $14.8 million and $151.1 nationwide. Matthew McConoughey’s Ghosts of Girlfriends Past placed fourth with $6.9 million, and Beyonce’s profitable Obsessed rounds out the top five with $4.6 million for a tally of $62.6 million – impressive considering the budged for the movie was $20 million.
Of note is Next Day Air starring Donald Faison and Mos Def with a less-than-stellar $2.3 million and $7.6 million – expect to catch this one on DVD real soon.
Next week look out for Terminator Salvation on the 21st.

This Movie wasn’t all that for someone who had read the book (took me less than 3 days to consume it 2 years ago!!) The book allows ones imagination to go crazy as the author is good with details that the movie could not have captured. For those of you who havent read the book, it’s perfect!!!!!

i thought the movie was really entertaining and it had a lot of good action.
I’m not surprised that some people think it’s not as good as the book, books are almost always better because of the detail they go into…

I enjoyed the movie a lot and as Lauren said “books are almost always better”. To me however, it was money well spent considering I never read the book.
