May 13, 2009 Michael Jackson Tour Details

MJ is about four weeks into tour rehearsals for his upcoming sold out, 50-date run at London’s O2 Arena beginning this July. Rehearsals are taking place in Burbank, CA, and are leading up to the legendary entertainer’s first live performances in 12 years. Production costs are reportedly $20 million, which promoter AEG Live is footing the bill for. The show was originally going to be capped at 90 minutes, but with the King of Pop’s ginormous song catalog, the show will be two-plus hours — something I’m sure his die-hard fans will not be unhappy about.
Randy Phillips, CEO of AEG Live promised the show will be a multi-media experience that will be “the most cutting edge ever employed on a tour. We’re using technology that’s never been used before in live entertainment.” Two sound stages are being used in the rehearsal process – one Michael works on with production designers, choreographers, the director and associate director, the other is used by the dancers and the band to rehearse the sets and practice choreography.
Dancer auditions were held in L.A. last month, with more than 700 dancers auditioning for the coveted spots.
Recently Jackson was sued by concert promoter AllGood Entertainment, claiming that he signed a contract to perform a reunion show with Janet and his brothers in July 2010. According to the claim, Jackson agreed to not perform any other show before then. The show was to be offered as an internet pay-per-view event, reportedly allowing MJ to make upwards of $30 million for the single event.
Phillips calls this deal “completely meritless and [has] not impacted rehearsals in any way. We have a bona fide contract, the deal’s in place, he’s performing, we’re performing.”
