May 1, 2009 Jam It Or Slam It? Queen Latifah – Chains

The legendary Queen Latifah (also known as Dana Owens) is back in the studio recording for her 7th album, Persona. Her last project, Trav’lin’ Light, was a wonderful collection of classic jazz standards and earned the Queen two Grammy nominations. If this new song is any indication of where Miss Owens is headed musically, then we’re definitely in for a surprise.
Queen Latifah takes us to the dance floor with this newly leaked track called “Chains.” With its beat driven sound accompanied by rock-influenced electric guitar riffs, this is by far something I would have never expected from her.
Love muffins, do we jam It? Or slam it?

I’m not particularly into the song, but it’s got a nice beat.

OK the song isn’t bad… HOWEVER, the beat and all thats going on in the song is drowning out her voice, especially in the octave she is singing. I love Queen Latifah and have ABSOLUTELY no question about her vocal ability, but this song might not have been the best match for her voice.

I like it. But it’s one of those songs that will probably have to grow on me.

Slam it…it’s too pop and young sounding. I’m not trying to say she is too old to sing it…but she is up there.

Something kind of 80s about it. I love the song and I like she tried something different, vocally. I think because it sounds older, to me, that’s why I see a “veteran” doing it. I could easily see Kylie, Pat or Debbie doing it, with their own style.
