March 31, 2009 Cover War! “Hey Girl (Patron Tequila)”

Okay Love Muffins, its time for a Cover War! A few days ago I posted the Keri Hilson version of “Hey Girl” ft. T-Pain and Lil Jon. I talked a bit about the controversy surrounding the song and mentioned how the song was scrapped from Keri’s album and given to up-and-coming girl group, The Paradiso Girls. Earlier today, The Paradiso Girls’ version of the song (renamed “Patron Tequila”) hit the net. It’s pretty much the same, except for T-Pain is no longer featured. Personally, I enjoyed Keri’s version better – her vocals are stronger and I think fit the song better. The Paradiso Girls sound too over-processed and don’t seem to have any real vocal skill.
Love muffins, tell me who you think did a better job with the song!

Im gunna go out on a ledge and say that Keri’s version sounds like it was recorded intentionally as a demo for these girls because she’s singing in a way that is waaaay more commercial than a lot of her other stuff (not in the main versus though)- mostly backing vocals and such. I enjoy Keri’s version more as well. In the Paradiso version – it’s definately a girl group type song where no one really stands out strong. The songs are alomost identical but there is something about the beat or pace that is slightly, very slightly different – you can hear it from the start of the song. Thanks B!

I like The Paradiso Girls’s version. It’s very catchy, sazzy, and flavorful. Keri Hilson’s made me take a 10 min nap.

The girls version sounds better only because that’s what it sounds like it’s made for, a more poppy/girl group feeling. Keri’s version is missing what a group of singers sound like… sounds like a demo to me. You can tell someone thought it better with a group instead of solo.

keri’s version. Both tracks sound autotuned till infinity, but the keri hilson-tpain-lil john elements fit better i think. Plus the fact that the paradiso girls look like a PuttyTat Dawls knock off has me leaning towards Keri as well.

I like Paradisio Girls version better, but seriously; DROP THE VOCORDER! I hate the way T-Pain has infected the industry with the persistent use of the vocorder, and now everyones doing it! I HATE IT! If you can’t sing, sit your ass down! Don’t continue to put out music and ruin the song with the effing vocorder!

Keri’s version rocks wayyyy more, and T-Pain’s vocoder, even though over-used, fits this song much better. Paradise girls’ vocals are so campy, and keri’s gangster vocal when she shouts ’so F***ed up!’ rocks!!

The song was originally made for Keri Hilson’s album, but was scrapped due to that it didnt flow well with the rest of the album. My opinion.. they should’ve just left it on there or just made it a bonus track because the Paradiso girls horribly fucked up the song by making it more poppish than crunk. This song definitely calls for a better crunk sound which Keri and T-Pain do add effortlessly.
