March 26, 2009 MTA Rate Hike

For my NYC love muffins, as I’m sure you’re all aware, doomsday has arrived and the MTA has voted unanimously to raise one-way train fare fifty cents to $2.50, and to scrap the W and Z lines. This couldn’t come at a worse time for New Yorkers in this deepening recession as the price of living in this city goes up every day. The new monthly unlimited Metrocard will set you back $103, up from $81, and you will see Long Island Railroad and Metro North fares increase as much as 23%. NYC’s seven bridges and tunnels will not go unaffected – tolls will increase 30% for cash users, and 26% for EZ Pass users.
If this isn’t enough, the transit giant will eliminate 21 bus lines in NYC, and another 14 systemwide. What this translates to is paying more, and getting less: longer wait times and decreased service.
Lord hammercy! When will things get better? Jesus take the wheel…of the cab because that’s how I’ll be getting around the city!

There is always a good side to everything… Maybe this will encourage more people to walk to their destinations, and thus, lower obesity rates.

Yikes, one of the reasons why I’m so excited about moving to NYC is because of the train system. Now it looks like it’s declining.

This is one subject that just angers me. It angers me because I feel hopeless. It’s almost like our money isn’t green enough or something. For me it’s not so much the hike but the decline of service. I take the train and bus everyday and it’s hectic on a slow day so I know there will be more fights, pushing, shoving and just spats all over the place. I will say this whole ordeal has motivated me to learn how to drive. *sigh*

LOL AT THE DOLLAR VANS!!! I feel your pain. I remember the days when a DOLLAR VAN WAS $1, the bus and train were $1.25 and it was smooth sailing. Nowadays, I dont even know wtf is going on. I was home (in queens) this summer and trying to take that E train every morning during rush hour was the worst experience ever. And what makes it worse is people have nasty attitudes. I know with the fare hike subway etiquette will decline. When will it get better?
