March 9, 2009 Box Office: ‘Watchmen’ Disappoints

Love muffins, Watchmen crowned this weekend’s box office with $55.7 million – far lower than industry expectations. Director Zack Snyder’s 300 opened with $70.0 million in March 2007 – a number Watchmen was expected to surpass. What’s more disappointing is that Watchmen opened in 3,611 theaters – the largest number for an R-rated move, ever!
In the number two spot is Terry Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail with $8.8 million and $76.5 million, total. Love muffins, this is Tyler Perry’s biggest-grossing movie to date and it’s for good reason – it’s funny! Go see it and get your laugh on.
Liam Neeson’s Taken rang up $7.5 million over the weekend, bringing it to $118 million. In the fourth spot is Slumdog Millionaire, still riding high after the Oscars with $6.9 million and $125.4 million domestically. Rounding out the top five was Paul Blart: Mall Cop with $4.2 million, and $133.6 total.
Here’s a look at the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

IDK who this disappointed because I knew it wasn’t going to be a good movie. The trailer was boring…
Did Madea gross more then Batman??? If so, wow! It was funny, but not that funny! Or maybe I can just be biased because I am a HUGE Batman fan!!

I went to see it and I thought it was pretty good. Just WAY too long and the long “sex” scene wasn’t needed. But it was still pretty good overall.
