Our girl Beyonce is on another magazine cover. This time, she is the cover girl for Giant magazine’s December/January 2009 issue (which hits newsstands today). During a recent New Zealand press conference for his promotion of 808’s & Heartbreak album, Kanye West said some off-the-wall things about Beyonce being better than Tina Turner.
“Nobody really wants to recognize that Beyoncé is a f*cking living legend and that she is just as great, if not greater, than the artists that we had in the past…that she’s probably greater than Tina Turner.”
I love Beyonce, but without the likes of Tina Turner, Mariah Carey, or Aretha Franklin, she wouldn’t be able do what she does best – which is to sing and perform. Do you think Kanye was right in what he said? View the video and leave your thoughts after the jump –

yeh they paved the way for her to do what shes doing but it dont mean she cant be better. but shes a better performer than all of them and a better vocallist than tina and aretha, aretha is so overrated. she isnt a better vocalist than mariah was at her peak but mariah is a shit dancer.

I agree. They paved the way but that don’t automatically dismiss that an new artist can’t be better.
I look at it like how our parents want better for us so we can do better than them and we pass on what we’ve learned so our child can do better for us. If the craft or music or artists doesn’t get better then no one learning! and we’re not progressing!

I have to agree with you 100% B. Scott!! Without these people there would be no Beyonce. Her originality is…oh wait, she lacks originality!!! She does have a wonderful work ethic and she does, at times, give credit to those who came before her. But greater than Tina Turner??!! I’m not sure about that. But I still wish her only the best.

I don’t feel one way or another about the issue but just because Tina, Mariah, and the others came first doesn’t mean Beyonce didn’t PERFECT and expand on what they did. For the record, Tina didn’t write much of her material either.

People probably didn’t think Tina Turner was all that when she was younger. It usually takes time for people to recognize legend status. Not the millions and billions of records sold, shows sold out, or people inspired by the artist.
It’s like many great painters, composers, sculptors, and such: Their work is never really appreciated until they are gone. This could be death or retirement.
So Kanye may see something many people do not…yet.

Oh Aretha is not overated. Aretha you Are tha Queen! Mariah is fabulous, but not sure better than Aretha prime to prime. I love both of these ladies though. Beyonce is good, but prolly should not announce that she wants to be an icon. She should just do the work. Time will Tell. Kanye on meds and should stay out of other artist’s ish. He wants to be bigger than dead Elvis, when Mariah already surpassed him as the best selling artist with singles at number 1. Recognize.

well surely all these lovely women set the tone, and paved the way, however I think Kanye is right. because Beyonce’s voice is flawless, and she puts on an incredible show. Tina be tearing it up for her age, and people who were young and growing up while she was, that’s what THEY LOVE, and I’ve been growing up with beyonce so SHE’S WHAT I LOVE. Like I’m not gone say nothing about Aretha and Mariah, because both those ladies have phenomenal voices, however Tina’s was never really that great to me. She is however STILL a legend in her own right, and I think beyonce is about to tear it down. she’s making her own name, and she’s proving that anything she touches turns to gold, and PLATINUM lol I don’t know if her current album is platinum yet, but i know it will if it hasn’t already.

Honesty I believe that Kanye west was right. Yes Aretha Franklin,Tina Turner,Patti Labelle, Etta James,and Diana Ross to name a few paved the way for singers like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey,and last but not least Beyonce. is it a crime for a student to be better than their teacher or a daughter to be better then their mother? music is always evolving just like technology that is evolution. The future will always be better then the past. And that’s my opinion on this matter.

I honestly dont agree with Kanye….. Tina is a true performer that is performing in her late 60’s …… Beyonce would never perform that long…. Hell she said it hherself she wants to be done in her 30’s…. I love her to death but shes wont be a lifelong performer like Tina…. people would be playin Tinas songs long after she is dead…. I couldnt say the same about Beyonce when she stops performing!!!!

Okay, Mariah didn’t pave the way for anyone! Mariah came out back in 1992..Billie Holiday,Eartha Kitt, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Josephine Baker, Cher, Madonna, WHitney Houston, set the tone for Mariah to do what she is doing. She is still considered of the new age..
Beyonce has done one thing that a lot of other artist have yet to do…she embodied..

Beyonce has embodied the voice of Aretha and Whitney?? WTF?? I applaud Beyonce for her performance skill and I think she is defiantly one to watch, but to say she’s better than the greats is laughable. There called “greats” for a reason, there’s a lot of chicks that was singing back in the day but those women were called greats because the exuded something original, new, real, raw, and soulful. Beyonce has yet to bring out anything original, or raw, or soulful she just learned from them. How can you be better than somebody when you copied their answers?

Yeah beyonces talented, but she is not a living legend with only three albums, I don’t think so. Right now she is reigning on the charts and is one of the hottest artist, but as far as an Icon or legend baby girl has much work and albums to put out.

Lilbit, get your facts straight. Mariah came out in 1990 and therefoe she’s been in the game for near 20 years she is no longer considered of the “new age” as you say. And Whitney did not set the tone for Mariah, Aretha yes but Mariah has surpassed Whitney at this point in time.
