July 16, 2008 New Movie Review: Hellboy II, Journey To The Center Of The Earth, Meet Dave

Over the weekend, I decided to see Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Meet Dave. I couldn’t wait because the previews for Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Journey to the Center of the Earth were really good and I just made myself go see Meet Dave. However, I was actually quite surprised with all three movies.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army:
My friend begged me to go with her to see Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but I was extremely tired. However, I did what any good friend would do – I placed a hot towel over my face to wake me up and sipped on some tea. The lines were packed no doubt with kids screaming, “Mommy I want Gummy Bears”. I yawned several times while awaiting for my popcorn and drink, and when we finally made it to the room where the film was just starting to play, all the lights were dim. I could barely see when walking to an empty seat. Within fifteen minutes of the movie, I couldn’t help but nod off. Then I awoke abruptly when I heard some trollop snoring extremely loud making me feel all discombobulated! Then I realized that trollop was me. The action scenes were great, but some of the jokes were slightly off to me, but midway I truly began to like the movie. The main character that did it for me was Selma Blair – I loved her powers! To sum up the movie, a leader breaks a truce with the humans which caused the battle between good and evil. This movie however, should be seen as a rental and not in a theater, at least not after 6pm.

Journey to the Center of the Earth:
I got a few good laughs while watching Journey to the Center of the Earth. I believe it is a must see for all ages. Brendan’s character has agreed to watch his nephew for a week since the death of his beloved brother some years before. You already know tension is in the air since the child has not seen his uncle in about five years. However, Brendan’s character find’s something that belonged to his brother that causes him to take his nephew on a journey – a journey to the center of the earth. It’s quite reminiscence of Jurassic Park but a tad bit funnier. But don’t take my word for it, go see it with a family member or see it by yourself.

Meet Dave:
When I walked into the theater, I didn’t have much hope for Meet Dave, but I was easily turned around after seeing this cute little kid with curly hair being bullied. My first instinct was to mollywhop somebody, but I had to remind myself that this was only a movie. I enjoyed everyone’s character except for Eddie Murphy’s. He seemed so monotone. I didn’t see him as alien, but as a zombie with good skin. The meaning in the film is what really got me, not Eddie Murphy’s bad acting. It reminds me that you must never give up on yourself or your dreams. Others might try to hold you down and stomp you to the ground, but you have to remember that you are different for a reason and destined for greatness. However, I don’t see this movie making over $45 million at the box office. Thoughts?
