June 29, 2008 Say What? A Teenager Decapitated!

Update:”Some witnesses have stated that the individual was trying to retrieve something he had lost. Others reported that he was trying to touch the ride. This is merely speculation at this point, and we are working with park visitors and local police to learn more.” [CNN]

Love muffins, I am sorry to say that a family outing at Six Flags went wrong which south in the death of a 17-year-old boy on Saturday in Georgia. The Batman roller coaster removed the head of the teenager after he hopped two six-foot fences in a restricted area to retrieve a hat he lost.

Police said the ride was going full-speed when the teen was struck. The ride’s top speed is 50 mph, according to the Six Flags Web site. No one riding on the roller coaster was injured, Sheth said. The teen’s friend also entered the restricted area but was not injured, Pierce said. The teen and his parents were at the park with a group from the Oakey Spring Baptist Church near Springfield, S.C., police said.

My condolences go out to the family. Thoughts? [Source]

  • I am speechless, this is so sad. We never know when our time will come. They are in my prayers.

  • i hate to say it but its restricted for a reason(two fences), they should have notified someone

  • damn thats sad yo, but i live in georgia and this is the second time some shit like this has happened at that damn ride. the first time was acouple of years ago when a girl i believe hopped the fence to get a cell or something and got decapitated. and where both these incidences happened at is at a location where everyone can see that is waiting in line. its right before you go inside the building where the rollercoaster drops low to the ground. its a sad thing and i hope the family can get through this hard time.
i couldn’t of emagined seeing something like that while waiting in line.

  • that poor poor guy and his familiy, my condolences go out to them

  • Damn thats real F*cked up. But I mean like someone said a Restricted area is a Restricted area for a reason. But shit happens..I can understand maybe he was determined to get his hat back, I know when I lose sh!t at amusement parks I try my damnest to get them back as well. My thoughts are with them…

  • I really feel for the family and his friends.

  • His family is in my prayers and so is everyone that witnessed the incident

  • Ok what they hell, I hoping his family was not watching. All the boy had to do was ask the operators of the ride to retrieve the hat or simply when the ride stopped tell the people im going to run and get my hat so dont start the ride till im out the way. Stupid decision can take your life.

  • I just went CNN and there story is different than what B.scott posted. The boy and his friend snuck away from the church group they were with and left the park to get something to eat, when they came back, instead of entering through the front gates, they hopped three restricted fences and one got struck. When he was struck everyone in line witnessed his instant death.

  • What a gruesome way to go. Just another reminder to follow the laws of the land. My condolences to the family.

They need to put barbed wire on the top of the fences and install a camera.Yall know how it is when u drop/loose your cell or in this case hat,he wanted his hat back but did something soo stupid. RIP

  • to the children/young adults today; whatever material things that you lost, move on it can be replaced unlike your life. there is only one you but many hats, cars, and other percieved luxury items out there. that hat, car, or whatever fascinates you for the time based on how advertisment/media places extreme importance/value on,etc have absolutely nothing on the most precious thing in the world taken from you, life. For those who don’t understand, think about the consequences of your actions prior to doing them to retrieve anything materialistic.

  • poor guy….i dont understand there were signs that said off limits and dangerous to visitors yet he still proceeded. all for a hat. my condolences to the family and witnesses

  • I would just tell the person operating the ride that my hat is down there and ask if I can get it or even if they can.
I would not put my life at risk for a hat, I don’t care how much I paid for it or even how much it’s worth.
I do feel sorry for the family.
Like others have said, a sign was posted and everything.

  • This is just awful! I agree with Courtney. There is no object that would make me want to risk my life like that.

  • CNN does say that the teenager may have been trying to retrieve something..some say he wanted to touch the ride..it didn’t say anything about him sneaking off to get something to eat, it said nothing about the boy leaving the park and trying to sneak back in. At 17 years old he probably was free to hangout with friends and last I heard they sold food at the park.

whatever happened the boy paid with his life…no need to lie about what is on CNN. People make mistakes all of the time…he paid the ultimate price.

  • This is sad. I was just there with my youth group the day before (Friday). My mom told me that Saturday when she saw it on the news, and I was shocked.

R.I.P My condolences go out to the family.

  • I’m sorry for what happened, and my prayers go to the family. However, if someone bypasses TWO six foot tall fences then I have questions about that persons mental capacity. Is it possible that he may have been a little slow and didn’t understand the danger involved? I know kids do really dumb things without thinking but this story needs a lot of clarification. RIP young man.

  • And the nominees for the 2008 Darwin Awards are…
