June 26, 2008 Blake Lewis Dropped From Record Label!

Blake Lewis joins Katharine Mcphee, Ruben Studdard, and Taylor Hicks by becoming the latest American Idol contestant dropped from their record labels after experiencing extreme popularity on the show. Beat-Boxing Blake, who came in 2nd place in season 6, had gotten signed with Arista Records, and released his debut album, Audio Day Dream this past December selling close to 300,000 copies. A representative from Arista records issued this statement:

“Arista Records will not be picking up Blake’s option and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

Love muffins, it seems like record labels are dropping ‘em quick and fast if they don’t go platinum straight out the gate. Whatever happened to the days when you got a second chance if your first album didn’t do as well as expected?

  • Jordan Sparks will be next

  • Clive Davis and the bunch are shooting themselves in the foot, by dropping winners and first runner up idols. People won’t watch and vote if winning doesn’t mean anything. Haven’t you noticed the Judges especially Simon act like the show is all about them. Viewership is down since they treated Taylor Hicks so badly. Simon went all over the place saying America got it wrong season 5. He was against putting Hicks and Daughtry thru to Hollywood, and he wasn’t to keen on David Cook, and he said Jennifer Hudson couldn’t make it. Someone brings him Leona Lewis and he claims he discovered her. Paula and Randy do know music. With all the money Clive, the producers and judges have made from AI, they should be ashamed to reject the voters wishes. If Jordan had not teamed up with Chris Brown she’d be given the boot next. How much longer will Fantasia be around. David Cook is creative like Taylor. Wait til he and Clive bash horns.

  • I don’t think we have to worry about Jordin or Fantasia for a while. Blake didn’t have a hit single, nor did Taylor Hicks. That combined with failing to sell many albums led to them being dropped. However, Jordin has 2 hits on her hands, and Fantasia had a huge hit with When I See U, so I think they’re safe for the time being.

  • After all the hype of AI calms down, fans just aren’t interested anymore. At least Fantasia found her own way, didn’t get caught up in the “pop” world. And the broadway gig definitely helped. Kelly also found her own style. As for Jordin, I see her lasting for a while.

  • I can understand a few of those, but Blake was what pop needs… I mean, how long has it been since a GOOD pop act came out? He’ll make it, one way or another. Whatever happened to Melinda Doolittle?

  • They should have dropped whoever was assigned to develop him as an artist.

The FAILURE was with the label, NOT the artist.

  • I heard Fantasia did get dropped from the label.
