British sensation Leona Lewis covers the July issue of Blender magazine and I love the cover. However, I hate when people compare her to Mariah Carey, saying ’she is the next Mariah’. I only mention Mariah in this post only because of the cover tag ‘Look out Mariah, Leona is Pop’s Next Megastar’. Just because Leona can hit notes in the whistle register doesn’t mean she is the next Mariah. Both women have their own style.

I notice that when many singers come on the scene, they embrace the girl next door look, but then years later they shed that image for a more sexed up image. But then again, there are some that don’t shed it, but embrace it with a little sex appeal, i.e. Mandy Moore and Hilary Duff. Thoughts?

B i agree with everything you said. even though i’m not into her music , i think leona has a beautiful voice, but her and mariah are two different people and they don’t even sound alike ( i’m comparing leona’s voice to mariah’s voice back in the day) .
i also believe it’s unfair for leona to have to spend her whole career being compared to anyone. what’s wrong with her just being leona instead of leona the next so and so?that’s a alot of pressure for any new artist to have to live up to.

Leona would be lucky if she has a quarter the popularity that Mariah has. Hey I dont particularly care for her voice, but Mariah has paid her dues in blood, sweat and tears, and for some newby to come on the scene talking about the way she dresses gets a big fat “ho sit down,” from me.

Leona is only new, we will see how big she will get in couple of years, I’m predicting that she can go as far as mariah went but I hope leona won’t attract listeners by showing off parts of her body like Mariah did, and keep her songs original. Sorry I think that the “new” mariah is just average and she could do much better so leona is saying truth about Mariah!

Even though she can really blow, Leona Lewis is kinda boring. Unless she can sing songs that can really touch peoples hearts, her label might make her change her style. We’ve all seen it before. Mariah as paved the way, when she came out she wasn’t calling herself the next aretha or whitney or anybody else. In order to be a success you have to be YOU! This is Leona’s prblem is she lets the media compare her but REAL stars (aretha, tina turner, mariah) never compared themselves to others or copied them. Plus you need star quality (which LL lacks, shes soo boring).
I don’t know who she thinks she is dissing Mariah, Mariah has a 5 octave vocal range, Leona has 3. Even vocally Leona cannot touch Mariah! She should respect MC and shut the feck up.
I remember years ago when they were calling Joss Stone the white Aretha Franklin, and where is Joss Stone now??? Noone cares for her, because she was no Aretha. We must respect the GREATS for paving the way, its unfair that people like MC and Aretha worked for years to make it and some little girls come along and try and claim to be them!!!
Leona isn’t even on Christina Aguilera’s level, she needs to prove herself 1st and then she maybe worthy of respect. As of now she isn’t!

She has a nice voice – but honestly speaking I think her reworked contract is a backdoor deal between Clive Davis and Simon Cowell. There aren’t very many established singers signing multimillion dollar record contracts – let alone someone new on the scene w/o a record (at the time) signing for a $100 mln contract. This screams of a Clive Davis scam (he has been indicted previously for fraud) so again Leona is good – but not worth $100 mln when cd sales and everything else is in a slump.

I love Mariah…but she dissed Leona first…a few months ago when Bleeding Love went to the #1 spot on the charts, even though Mariah said “She can’t be the next me, can she do what I do, can she be my double? And I’m not talking about this girl LEona Specifically….” in other words she was talkin bout her..and im sure word got around to Leona who looked up to MAriah as an artist is now lashing back at her…good for Leona..

I listened to Leona’s album (I didn’t buy it lol). She has NOTHING on Mariah. Mc’s first album is a classic from top to bottom, Leona’s album is hella boring.

Erm why are people so keen to judge Leona Lewis so soon? People, she’s just a debut artist! Personally I love Leona Lewis myself, and in my opinion if somebody asked me who was better, it would be Leona Lewis rather than Mariah Carey but thats just MY opinion. Who says Leona is boring? Watching some of her interviews she is actually very funny! I read in an interview somewhere that she said she thinks women who have the confidence and style to wear skirts and low tops are fantastic and she says thats great but she’s just saying she isnt that type of girl. Leona Lewis is in no way dependant on Mariah Carey. Leona has achieved what she had through her own hard work and determination and leona has even stated “she has a lot of hard work to do before reaching the greats” and that it was “unfair for the likes of mariah to be compared to”. Leona doesn’t want what mariah has, but leona will be around for a very long time. End of the day say what you wnat but you all know lEONA has got a voice worthy of mariah.

A little surprised by this sour grapes comment by Lewis. After seeing the HIGHLY unflattering bikini pics of her that recently surfaced online (which Lewis herself calls “embarrassing”) one has to wonder if she avoids revealing clothing not as a matter of choice, but rather because she couldn’t pull it off even if she wanted to. The gentle modesty that is so central to Lewis’ image seems a bit fake in light of this sneaky put-down towards other talented singers with great bodies who choose to dress provocatively (Mariah, Christina, Beyonce). Didn’t Lewis recently hire Mariah Carey’s personal trainer? Sounds like envy to me…

Ok “L” you make a valuable and highly intellegent point. If only evidence hadn’t suggested the complete opposite!
First off, like I’ve stated, Leona did say she doesn’t wear low tops and skirts (mainly because she hasn’t the confidence) but I recall her saying somewhere that she thought people who did wear low tops and short skirts were amazing and looked great.
Secondly, no. Leona Lewis did not hire Mariah Carey’s trainer. Apparently she was supposed to have, but she denied this. Her team think it stemmed from mariah’s trainers camp, to give her more exposure and hopefully more celebs would hire her too.
And lastly, you mariah fans need to get over yourself. The only reason this Leona vs Mariah war is happening is because you mimi fans took it the wrong way when people compared Leona to Mariah and got your back up. Why? Because you feel threatened by her. Already there have been comparisons between Alex Burke and Leona Lewis both from the X Factor yet Leona fans aren’t hating alex and we don’t feel threatened. Mariah is great, she could release an album 2mro and head straight to number 1, but that doesn’t mean to say other singers can’t be as good as her. Leona Lewis doesn’t want to be Mariah, Im sure. Maybe she would like the success and longetivity of her career yes, but become her? No.

I don’t think Mariah or fans feel threatened by Leona. I think it’s disrespectful for people to compare a newbie to a veteran and not respect that Mariah is an Icon. That is not okay. In every field, accomplishments are honored and remembered. The same goes in music…or should. A few notes does not a comparison make. Like it or not, God has blessed Mariah with her career. Leona is a completely different person and will have a career of her own. You can’t covet and just step into someone else’s career when God has given that career to them. It may look like that will work, but only for a minute.
