May 19, 2008 Should Florida and Michigan Be Counted?!

Love Muffins, On May 31st, the Democratic National Committee will make the decision if the two million votes in Florida and Michigan will be counted. The decision is especially critical given the important role these states will play in the November election. Making these votes count can make or break this primary election for both Barack and Hillary. Do you all feel these votes should be counted or just left unnoticed? Two million people in these two states took time out of their lives to cast a vote for their chosen candidate. Is it the “American Way” to let their voices be heard? Please let me know! Thoughts?!

  • it should NOT be counted…they BOTH agreed that both states broke the rules and that both states should not be counted…BUT now that Hilary is losing, she wants to count them….

…which is stupid because Obama wasn’t even one of the state’s ballots and didnt campaign in both states because of the agreement they both made.

The fact that Hilary wants to count the votes now, going against her initial decision speaks of her character as a snake.

I honestly do not see how anybody votes for her after seeing her lie and manipulate time and time again. Trust me—the democratic party will not count michigan and florida—if they do all hell will break loose.

  • Hell yeah they should be counted! I live in Orlando, Fl and I voted just like everyone else in this country. Why can’t my vote count just like every other State in this country. I have been upset about this since this whole situation took place! I say YES! COUNT MY VOTE!

  • Because I live in Michigan than I say YES the votes should be counted. It sucks that our government decided to up our primary date to make us a contender in this race and it seems to have backfired and only screwed things up.

If they do count MI than they should find a way to split the delegates in as fair a way as possible. We had 46% (don’t quote me on that) uncommited votes which basically meant that ppl were voting for Obama since he wasn’t on the ballot. So I def think that he deserves some of the delegates. But the last two options taken to the table to see if there could be a mutual decision on how to split the delegates turned up nothing so it won’t be surprising if they just don’t count MI at all.

  • I agree! It’s ONLY the “American Way” Count all 2 million!

  • I live in Florida and I say YES! But we all knew what would happen if the primaries were held early and yet they decided to go ahead with the plan so that makes them a bunch of idiots. Either way I can care less whether they’re counted or not, I’m looking ahead to November.

  • While I feel bad for the 2 million people who did what they were supposed to do as American citizens and exercised their right to vote, I don’t think the votes should be counted. The heads of those two states went against party rules and decided to move their primaries up, and both states knew that it was possible that their votes would not be counted. Hillary and Barack both agreed that these votes wouldn’t count…they both need to honor their committment as well as honor the rules set forth by the DNC. The people of Florida and Michigan need to get hold of the powers that be that decided to make the “wise” decision of moving the dates up.

  • 2 MILLION VOTED PEOPLE! THIS IS AMERICA FOR GOD SAKE! WE MUST HONOR THEIR VOTES NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENED. THIS IS AMERICA. HOME OF THE FREE, LAND OF THE BRAVE. DAMN, THIS ELECTION IS CRAZY AS HELL.

  • I agree with CC.
It’s sad that people even voted in those states. It upsets me that Hillary kept her name on the ballot–which suggests she had in mind to count the votes now, even though she knows it’s not fair. For Hillary supporters you can call the votes being “let unnoticed,” but for obama supporters, the votes were never recognized in the first place!

  • CC definitely said it best.
….plus, honestly folks, we already know it’s Obama vs McCain now anyway lol

  • I live in Michigan and I believe the votes should not be counted. Both states violated conditions under the national party rules and have to suffer the consequences of their actions.

All candidates agreed that the votes would not count and it didn’t become an issue until Clinton lost on the original Super Tuesday.

I did not vote during our primary because 1. I knew it was for nothing and 2. my candidate wasn’t on the ballot and you you could not write him in or else your ballot would be thrown out.

It is unfortunate that the states decided to do this, and yes our primary/caucuses are unfair but rules are rules.

What they can do is change this in the future but not this year.

  • EVERYONE’s vote should count….period!

  • Everyones vote should count if the rules where followed. If they both agreed not to count them then they should not be counted.

  • Everyone’s vote should have counted from the start regardless of a deadline but… if they agreed to not count the votes, I don’t think it’s fair to reach back and count them now. If the rules keep switching to give certain people a leg up we will never get a good person in office.

  • Even if they count the votes Hillary still loses!!
So yes let them count them so she can see she lost fair and square!!! ANd as for Michigan how can you say you won when you were the only person on the ballot!! Illogical but its how she thinks!!!

  • COUNT THOSE VOTES! It’s the RIGHT thing to do and if you agree click on the link below to sign a petition that will be presented to the DNC on May 31.

    Hillary 2008!

  • well, as much as it sounds wonderful b, and others to say “america the free” or “america home of the brave,” the fact remains that voting isn’t a free-for-all. there are rules, and if you don’t abide by them, you may not be counted. it sucks, but its always been this way. if you have been convicted of a felony, you can’t vote. if your government i.d. isn’t valid, you can’t vote. if you vote during an election you have explicitly been told not to, the votes probably won’t count. it sucks, but it’s always been this way.
and for all the MI and FL people who are upset and blame the politicians or powers that be for their votes being at risk, what did you do up until the election to ensure you would be counted? or is it just now in retrospect you feel cheated? i would have felt cheated as soon as the state told me that they were moving the primary! where was the outcry then? i am not pointing fingers, b/c i am neither floridian or michiganian (lol, i have no idea), but tis a confusing thing that suddenly, these erroneous votes seem in such dire need of being counted, while the voters casted them with the knowledge they wouldn’t be. interesting…

  • I agree JY 2 fly and I am a Floridian. The only reason people want the vote counted is because their candidate is losing. Had Hillary been ahead and Barack had won MI and FL she would want the initial decision to stand. And the last time I checked even with the votes counted Hillary will still be down by 134 votes = a loss!!

  • In the words of Sheryl Crow.

“We’ll be the last country to recognize
Where there is shit there’s always flies”

This country is effed up right now if we don’t think two states that are on The US map should not be heard! If the DNC doesn’t count the votes this country is going to riot!

I vote YES count all 2 million of the votes. This is America people! Wake up!

  • If you or someone else has an issue with B Scott why don’t you email him? This forum is not the place to air yours or someone else’s grievances.

  • damn someone is trying to air B.Scott’s dirt.

  • No, plain and simple. They both agreed to not count the votes. It’s a done deal.

I agree with G, (the first post).

  • Why not just make them vote again? Wouldn’t that solve all the problems. Throw out the old votes and go vote again. If they really care so much about then no one should be upset about voting again. I would vote a thousand times for my candidate like.

  • No they should not count. They did not follow the rules as established by not only the DNC, but also the Republican party. Both states were penalized by both parties. The Democratic candidates agreed from the beginning these votes would not count,so they should not count.

Florida and Michigan’s votes should not be counted. point blank

  • what of the other 2-3 million people that did NOT go and vote because they told them THAT IT WOULD NOT COUNT.

who is speaking for those voters?

  • I’m from Michigan and I don’t believe that they should be counted. Both agreed that they wouldn’t count after the rules were broken. Now that Hilary won both she wants to boo hoo about the votes counting? Get outta here…

  • No, they should not be counted. The rules were not followed and one of the candidates wasn’t even on the ballot.

  • I agree Kissa, the votes shouldn’t be counted because Obama wasn’t even on the ballot there so how is it fair to the American people to count these votes, because any Obama supporters votes won’t be counted so there will still be people who votes wont be counted. The only way to fairly count them would be to split the delegtes evenly between the two. In which case Hillary still loses. So really, in the grand scheme of things counting them won’t change the outcome at all. What it will do is have other states thinking that they don’t have to follow DNC guidelines and that’s the bigger problem. That’s the bigger issue here. Unfortunately MI and FL are being made the examples of what happens when you don’t follow the rules. That to me is more important. If having these votes counted actually had the potential to change the outcome, I’d be all for it (even though I’m a Obama supporter because fair is fair) but since the writing is already on the wall for Clinton (especially with 75k going to hear Obama speak in a must win state for her). Its a wrap. The only thing admirable I can say about her is her “fighter” attitude but really she should throw in the towel if she doesn’t win tomorrow. Let it go already, you lost. Woman up and congratulate the man.

  • No those votes should not be counted and the citizens of Florida & Michagan can only be upset @ their state for not having all candidates on the ballots. If all the candidates were on the ballots then yes they should be counted like the other states but since they weren’t they shouldn’t be counted.

  • The votes should not be counted…, based on the fact the states knew that they were going against convention rules by holding the primaries early. I feet if these votes are counted that in of itself could set a precedent that we as the American people do not want to unlease. Our reputation with the world is on shaky ground as it is and to see rules set and changed as we go will only serve to make the rest of the world believe that if can’t play fair with each other how can we be trusted with others.

Maybe, this should be a wake up call to the people in those states that it is time to make some serious changes with the people who were elected to the state governments in MIchigan and Florida.

of course the ppl who reside in those states want their voices heard but its unjust that Obamas name wasnt even on the ballots. so i say how is that just to him? its not and thats one of the reasons y im not for hillary because she know damn well that those delegates she received in those states dont supposed to count, yet she campaigned in those states as well. i know politics are all fair but come on now its 2008 and some politicians are still acting up, when are we as the public will be able to say all politicians are telling the truth and not pulling one over on us.

i feel for the ppl in those states because their voices do deserve to be heard but in a just manner.

  • I don’t think they should count. I heard weeks in advance the penalty they faced for holding their primaries early so I know they heard it too. It is what it is. If they decide to count them how are they going to split the delegates? They can’t give the wins to Hillary because she was the only one cunning enough to go against the ruling of her party. The whole thing just seems like more dirty politics to me.

  • the votes should NOT be counted.

    1. they both agreed to the rules in the beginning.

    2. obama’s name wasn’t on the ballot in michigan.

    3. clinton wants to change the rules only cause she is losing. if it was the other way around she wouldn’t care.

  • Honestly I think that it’s very unfair that Mi and Fl’s votes aren’t being counted. But The fact remains that they knew it wasn’t going to count in the beginning, if it was that important why did they agree to the terms.

Although a lot of people voted, some did not knowing that their votes wouldn’t count. SO NO, THEY SHOULDN’T BE COUNTED.

If Hillary was in the lead, she wouldn’t give 2 thoughts about it, and when she had the super delegate lead, she was willing to allow them to over turn the majority vote and give her the nominee saying that the rules are the rules. (I guess that only applies when it’s in her favor)

We are too deep and too far into the election to turn back now, even if they went back to do a re vote Obama has too much a lead that it would have no effect. I

‘m sorry that Hillary supporters feel somewhat cheated and are looking for any excuse to divide the party more, but it’s not Obama’s fault nor Hillary, it’s actually the republican parties evil doing. So all we can do now is move on. And go by the rules that have been set.

  • i agree with some folks above. they (FL and MI) should NOT be counted. it was a conscious decision that they both agreed to and, in doing so, obama did not campaign there even though hillary did (and now she’s mad that she’s losing and losing money) so now she wants to bring it to the forefront. NO. bow out fair and square, darlin.

  • Why is it that whenever there is some election drama, somehow Florida is always in the mix? :-)
With that said, Hillary and Obama supporters alike should direct their anger to their state representatives. They essentially played Russian Roulette with their votes and I suggest that voters who feel disenfranchised should clean house in their state legislature this November.
