Fox News is reporting that presidential candidate, Barack Obama and his wife Michelle made a combined earning of 1.4 million between the years of 2000-2004 and donated 1% to charity. This total is surprising because compared to the average conservative who donates 30% a year, liberals are known for giving back more. My question is will you vote for a candidate who doesn’t give back to the needy? Please let me know!

so you factor in what that 1.4 is AFTER taxes and then the fact that 14k a year for 4 years is $3500 a year. i don’t think that’s so bad. i mean, it’s two people who how grossed TOGETHER 1.4mil in four years. it’s not like they make 1.4mil A YEAR. i wasn’t really disturbed by it. the one thing i did question was him saying he doesn’t agree with his pastor but gave contributions to him/ the church…… that’s one i’d have to have explained to me. and then the other thing is, if he’s only given 14k to charity then what about the check he gave to his old church for $27,500? i think the resources are a little off. like maybe the source of this info is coming from the intelligent workers at the L.A. Actually I saw a tv special that showed conservatives give more to charity. Liberals feel that there tax dollars support programs in the community that will provide for the needy. Nearly half of the family income came from his book. Has anyone researched when his publishers paid? What if all or nearly all that half million came at the end of the year? Did any of you ever consider that maybe Obama had been planning to run for president for some time now and was making provisions for his family so that they weren’t starving while he was on the campaign trail? This is an interesting question, however, we should also ask ourselves if giving to charities is the most important form of giving back. I just think it is a bit ironic that so many wealthy and conservative people love to throw money at charities while simultaneously voting for and helping to perpetuate many of things they are donating money to end. These actions contradict. With this being the case, is it not more important that we look at what a person has donated of their time and energy to support a cause versus what someone claims to support through funding? I am not at all claiming that funding is not important, but sometimes you can have all the materials needed to make something happen and it still not be carried out if no one puts in the work. The Obamas’ life work seems to be committed to making true change and progress. In my eyes, this is the most important form of giving back.

Obviously like so many American’s a lot of us here aren’t familiar with finance in anyway – I am glad it’s my fulltime job as a consultant and I can offer brief insight. NOIR hit it on the nose – debt. In reading I know that Senator Obama and Mrs. Obama had significant college debt. Being Harvard and Princeton graduaes I can understand why. They only recently paid those debts off. Add mortgages and car notes to that and I don’t think they’re doing too bad. Their actual combined income was about $250,000 with a little over $700,000 coming from book royalties. Y’all know about paying taxes right? Yeah include that in there and they did pretty well.
I give between 10% and 13% of my income to charity but in reality most of that comes back – and I don’t have kids either – they have two. Now can we review Senator Clinton’s records?
I like how most of you are willing to forget that Bill Clinton was disbared from the Supreme Court bar in 2001 for perjury. That Hillary negotiated illegal funds from the Republic of China to influence U. S.policies or that it was THEIR administration that instituded the horrible “DON’T ASK/DON’T TELL” policy against GAYS. But y’all love em. Oh yeah and that they also excepted money for pardons….hmmmm Like Aretha said, “YOU BETTER THINK!”

#1 – That’s $350,000/year, 1% is better than nothing. He ain’t have to give that.
#2 – There is people who make $20,000/year and don’t even “think” about giving 1% of that, which is only $200
#3 – And last but certainly not least, donating to “the needy” is a personal decision. It is not mandatory, nor a responsibility.

That’s only 350K a year between the two of them. They don’t make millions and millions of dollars a year like most of their political counterparts most of whom are married to housewives which Michelle is not. I doubt very seriously if they could afford to give 30% to charity. Not to mention Barack has been a hands on community servant dedicating his time to charitable causes rather than throwing money at it. I’m sure that when they start making millions a year they will give more.

Fox news will report anything to do more damage to democrats than republicans so I rarely listen to what they have to say. More importantly, I’m not worried about how much a candidate is donating to charities I’m more worried about what they can do for the country. To hear he donated something at all is a good thing to know because I don’t know what Hillary has donated since she still hasn’t released her tax returns, but all of this is besides the point. Considering the fact that Obama WILL be the democratic nominee (unless superdelegates go against the vote of the people causing all Hell to erupt across the country), all of the democrats (including myself) should stop tearing each candidate apart because it is only giving the republicans ammo against us for the general election. We need the Independent “swing votes” to win and tearing Obama down is the last thing we need the swing voters to see.

I remember not too long ago Barack and Michelle were on the Oprah show and she joked that thanks to Barack’s books they were able to finally pay off their student loans. Considering where they went to school you can only imagine how much that was. Anyway, we have this view that all politicians are filthy rich and the truth is most are. More often than not they have money coming in from outside sources. Some above the table some below. Here’s Barack, who has made some money from writing books and it’s finally getting some paper in his pocket and now we’re going to get on his case about the amount he’s donated. Um, I don’t know about you but it’s too early in the game for Barack to start switching his style up. If he’s made 1 mil in the last year that’s not enough to go throwing it away. Please, the people who said that he should be donating more, give me a break. The man has kids and a family. While he’s pulling in the paper now, he’d be really foolish if he wasn’t investing and saving this newfound money of his. That’s what I’d do and I imagine what the rest of you would do as well. Sounds like he’s spending his money wisely to me.
