Neo-soul singer, Erykah Badu has been named the face of Tom Ford’s new fragrance, still unnamed. With everyone putting their name on products these days makes you wonder if they are selling out? What do you think love muffins? Is Erykah Badu smart for cashing in on her fame or not staying true to herself?

BADU IS JUST PLAYING THE GAME LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE. HER ARTISTIC INTEGRITY SHOULD NOT BE ATTACKED FOR TAKING AN ENDORESEMENT. WHAT SHE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF IS THIS TERRIBLE PROMOTIONAL PIC WITH NO MAKEUP OR A STYLIST. YUCK!

jayhawk73 I guess you like the fake!

I would never have expected Erykah to fold and play this game. She’s so true with her music until I thought the trueness extended to every facet of her life.

But I can’t fault her for wanting to make money, so I understand.

She’s not selling out, she is trying to make money…If an artist only sticks to music, they are losing out on other revenue! Artist don’t get that much money from making their CDs alone - that’s why they do paid appearances, concerts, endorsements, etc. Too many people eat off one artist, and your money is not as plentiful as you think! Trust me, she is going to still be true to herself - but her and her son has to eat!

WHEN DID PUTTIN’ ON MAKEUP AND LOOKING GOOD MAKE YOU FAKE? HELL I GUESS NOBODY IS REAL THEN. GET REAL!

Erykah could never sell out. Some people are running around here with 50-11 endorsement deals….Ms. Badu gets ONE and she’s “selling out”. Go ‘head girl! Make that money!

I love erykah’s music but I really don’t think she can seel out. This is the same chick that wore fake dreds, extra padding in her head wrap..and let’s not even talk abotu a few of the contradictory ways she carried herself in her relationship with Andre Benjamin.

I think Erykah just tries to blend into whatever mood or persona she is feeling at the moment. I think when people choose to expect more from her, or anyone else for that matter, in terms of how they should represent themselves, they just end up being disappointed.

I do believe in sellouts and there are many out there. But Erykah is not neccessarily a soul singer in the business of simply making good soul music. She has decided to market herself as a pseudo individual in an effort to sell her brand to increase her worth.

People had the same reaction when they found out she was baldheaded under that headwrap and when they found out her dreds were fake extensions. It’s difficult to expect “trueness, as Dalia described, from a person who is in the business of selling their image to make money, I think we may be expecting to much of them when we expect them to remain “true”–true to what? True to themselves–who are they really? True to their label and those that pay their bills? or true to who they WANT to be?

Erykah is and has always been true to herself, and as an artistic person, that “self” can change from time to time. If a certain wig or weave expresses how she is feeling or the mood she’s in at that time, so be it…If she wants to look pretty and wear makeup sometimes, so be it…the greatest artists can express their creativity in many ways.

As for selling out, Erykah is such a beautiful creature that she NEEDS to be the face of a major campaign. The public needs to see her and embrace a different type of beauty, and I say MAKET THAT MONEY!

HELL YEAH! It’s about time she cashed in on something. She is so slept on and she deserves to prosper too

Perfectly fine with me. If I see her with a Naomi Campbell shoulder length Asian wig, I might change my mind.

mmm…I am going to see WHO this Tom Ford is. I know he is about SOMETHING because Erykah is very purposeful. He is for sure a BRIGHT man. My girl, Badu, is GORGEOUS. Why NOT have her as the face of your product?!!!?!!??

I don’t understand. How is she selling out? For venturing into other business opportunities? Trying to further her career? Diversifying her portfolio? Ensuring financial stability for herself and her children in the future? You of all people should understand that. Did you accuse Mariah of selling out when she put her face on that God awful perfume? You act like they asked her to remake “Oops I Did It Again” or something. I get so aggravated when folks are so quick to accuse others of “selling out” for doing something that you don’t feel she should be doing…If given the opportunity, you would do the same damn thing. Don’t be mad because they didn’t ask you.

Go for it. I’m certain it’ll be an earthy/organic scent. I can’t see her putting her name on trash.

  14. SexyBeautifulOne on February 19, 2008 at 12:39 pm #

As long as it smells GOOD, it’ll be cool with me! A lot of those celebrity fragrances smell like toilet water…literally!

Tom Ford is my boo. He was responsible for the creative resurgence of Gucci and YSL in the ’90s. It’s hard to believe but for some time Gucci was stagnant house. I haven’t seen his work since he went under his own name, but hopefully the budget will allow for one of his suits soon. He’s a genius.

  20. JCain on February 20, 2008 at 5:58 pm #

Will always have love for Erykah and support her in all that she does.

No selling out. (People said the same thing about Common/GAP.) This is just another avenue for her.

  21. BeautifulBoy on February 22, 2008 at 11:43 am #

Tom Ford was a mere simpleton that had great designers working under him for which their work he took credit for. Yeah he was good at hiring new talent and mentouring them, but as far as design he had very little to do with the evolution of Gucci’s design. The three head designers at Gucci now were the ones who helped catapult him into a new stratosphere. Anyway go Erykah, but I don’t think I’d be too apt to want to smell like her. Brand imaging is everything.
