Girlfriends: CANCELLED!

February 12, 2008

gf-canceled-feb12.jpg

Girlfriends has officially been cancelled and the network is not even planning to shoot a finale episode. The show was in the process of brining back Jill Marie Jones (Toni Childs) for the year’s season/series finale. The show is one year short of being being the longest running African American sitcom in television history. Longer than Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, Martin, A Different World, The Jeffersons, etc. It is currently tied for longest running African American sitcom of all time with The Cosby Show. And the source says that ninth year was something Mara Brock Akil (the show’s creator and executive producer) really wanted to accomplish and something that the team feels they should have been given an opportunity to do. This is tragic! Love Muffins will you miss the ladies of Girlfriends?!

WOW I AM Truly shock that they ended the show with out given at least a final. Girlfriend was one the really good show that actually keep me watching tv. I really this show truly has to have some resolution to it at least a final show. I really do which some else could pick the show up.

  5. blu on February 12, 2008 at 1:03 pm #

I’m not at all shocked. Let’s be real…the show was greatness when ALLLLLLLL the girls were on it. I’m sorry, but it wasnt the same after Toni Childs left, and it got to a point where I just stopped watching. It would be nice to see all of them together again………

  6. junior on February 12, 2008 at 1:04 pm #

IT IS AWFUL and EXTREMELY disrespectful for the CW to cancel a show that has been running for 9 years without a final episode! I am in shock they will do that to a show that brought them so many ratings…but in the real, i stipped watching as soon as Toni left the show…

  7. jai on February 12, 2008 at 1:04 pm #

i think the ratings went down when they moved to the CW…i liked that show….i would have liked to see toni childs come back with her stuck up ass…lol

  8. MissBrandi on February 12, 2008 at 1:30 pm #

I’ll be honest..the show really did change when Jill left. And these past 2 seasons without her were not good. But I think having a proper finale would be good and not just leave us in the dark about what’s going to happen.

  9. GossipChick on February 12, 2008 at 1:34 pm #

i understand that the show wasnt what it used to be but the ladies DESERVED a series/season finale. NINE SEASONS of work to go out like that???? its disrespectful to say the least

  10. BabyBrown on February 12, 2008 at 1:36 pm #

i mean DAMN AT LEAST GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO WRAP IT UP AND BRING JILL FOR ONE MORE EPISODE!!! but when Jill left i did stop watching because she was my favorite girlfriend, but the years they were on tv and that legacy CAN THEY GET A SERIES FINALE, DON’T ‘WAYANS BROS.’ them, shit!

  11. meems2 on February 12, 2008 at 1:45 pm #

I would like to see the show have a finale. I did lose interest in the show. But I did watch. If they get rid of “The Game”…Im gonna be upset

  12. keke on February 12, 2008 at 1:54 pm #

This is so disrespectful,I get so tired of these networks doing “urban” shows like this, they did the same thing to Living Single and Half and Half, this is ridiculous at least give them the opportunity to wrap the series up. GEEZ!

  13. ladyrazor on February 12, 2008 at 2:09 pm #

Im beyond PISSED!!!!!!!!!!! i feel just like keke do…why is it always the urban shows that get kicked to the dam curb…it makes no sense…i cant stand these dam networks doing this…there is other shows they need to be cancelled not this. expecially since this is a show that brought so many years to this network and made a lot of network people rich…..but now i see how it is…..use us and abuse our talents….Triflin TROLLOPPPS!!!!

  14. Koolaid on February 12, 2008 at 2:14 pm #

I truely enjoyed Girlfriends and am sad to see it go. I wonder what really happened?

  15. Bird on February 12, 2008 at 2:32 pm #

I didn’t see the show surviving the strike. I really didn’t. Still I have not gotten any official word on this yet. I have only seen it on two blogs neither of which site their sources for the info.

  16. Bird on February 12, 2008 at 2:36 pm #

    From TVGuide.com

    Girlfriends
Two pre-strike episodes remain. No additional episodes expected, although a special one-hour series finale is being discussed.

  17. jay on February 12, 2008 at 3:03 pm #

After Jill left the show sucked. I’m glad it’s gone. It seemed like the episodes had no plot.

  18. Much2much41 on February 12, 2008 at 3:26 pm #

I already sent an email to CW’s feedback email about this. It would be different if this wasn’t a show that got off the ground, but after 8 years, the cast and the viewers deserve the respect of a finale. They already left us hanging with Half & Half when they didn’t bother to bring that show to CW, and left us with a cliffhanger, but then not to even give us THAT much? That is SO foul!

  19. Diva on February 12, 2008 at 3:38 pm #

Now that is just not right! It’s bad enough we don’t have enough black women on t.v. pertraying a positive representation. I will truly miss this show!

  20. Chance on February 12, 2008 at 3:41 pm #

Whatever the issue was they still deserved the respect of a season finale. That was a slap in the face to just cancel them like that. Black actors get NO respect! CW better make this right or I will block them permanently from every TV in my house.

    I want answers!
    &
    …a season finale.

  21. KR on February 12, 2008 at 4:56 pm #

Honestly the show was getting tired and I barely caught the episodes of the past two seasons. I felt the same way about the Cosby Show and other shows. I would like to see a proper finale though, it’s only right for the fans who stuck with them.

  22. SAY WHAT :0 on February 12, 2008 at 5:02 pm #

i used to be a Girlfriend junkie, never missed an episode but after a while the show wasn’t my top priority anymore (yes priorty)! like #21-i just stopped lookin at it.

  23. SAKETA on February 12, 2008 at 5:36 pm #

I have to agree with some of the other people’s comments. When Jill left the show, it just wasn’t the same. Still, where else are modern black women going to find a show that represents sisters in such a way? Young, black, intelligent, career oriented, sometimes single, and in and out of love. It was the black Sex in the City. The black Cashmere Mafia, so, to me, the show will be greatly missed. I love you B SCOTT!! Double kisses! MUAH! MUAH!

    You are so SPLENDIFEROUS!
    SAKETA

  24. Melissa on February 12, 2008 at 6:03 pm #

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS SO SAD! OMG! I LIVE FOR GIRLFRIENDS. =( WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY??????????????? THIS IS SO NOT FAIR.

  25. shay2shaymd on February 12, 2008 at 6:05 pm #

i’ve watched one episode since they got rid of the Toni Childs character.. she was a huge asset to the show.. i’m surprised it lasted this long without her.

  26. TJ on February 12, 2008 at 6:23 pm #

Yeah when Jill left, I left. It just didn’t seem right. But something aint right for only a few shows to make it that long. It’s a bit disrepsectful to cancel a series without a proper finale, it’s like saying you (everyone involved in creating & viewers) aren’t worth it. Maybe it’s me? Anyway they should be proud of 8 years.

  27. DJ on February 12, 2008 at 7:02 pm #

I am absolutely devastated. I admit that the show changed after Toni left but it was still one of my favorites. It is foul to cut it off like that and not to give us dedicated fans a proper closing!!!!

  28. angelamaria1858 on February 12, 2008 at 7:47 pm #

I am truely upset because that show was my drug. I would like it if they brought back Toni. We need to write people who can change this. Maybe TV Land will take the show and BET.

  29. 1234567890 on February 12, 2008 at 8:12 pm #

why did jill leave in the first place?

  30. Cody on February 13, 2008 at 9:29 am #

I think I watched one episode after Toni Child’s left. When Toni left, the show DIED for me. Not sure why she left, but they should of done everything to keep her. Oh well.

  31. Bird on February 13, 2008 at 10:55 am #

Toni claims she left to pursue a movie career which I don’t believe. Her acting career has not taken off yet and it’s been two or three years since she left. The producers have been trying to get her back, but up until now she has not returned for whatever reason.

  32. V on February 13, 2008 at 3:19 pm #

Damn what a shame i really like show so many good black shows are being CANCELLED first Martin now this

  33. Simoen on February 13, 2008 at 3:51 pm #

Isn’t there anything that people can do? I loved this show, i’ve watched in from the very beginning it was the only good black UPN had

  34. Mahogany on February 13, 2008 at 7:34 pm #

This is yet again a case of discrimination and industry sabotage. We must send letters to the CW and DEMAND a finale. I did it many years ago on behalf of “Living Single” and they responded with said finale, but had the nerve to air it on a time that most fans missed. i am still demanding that they release all seasons of that show! I am not surprised by this continuous lack of respect for shows that reflect a well-rounded and uplifting side of the Black woman. In a word, this is classic racism. Do something, send a letter, otherwise, it will happen again. Go to the CW website, and get the address.

  35. dee on February 14, 2008 at 1:38 pm #

what? this show has been on THAT long? woooowwwww….

  36. Hchop on February 14, 2008 at 3:51 pm #

I am pissed about this because they didnt even give a reason why. This show was teh best thing yet.

  37. Jameika on February 14, 2008 at 5:36 pm #

Damn….and I was barely getting over the cancellation of Half & Half from 2 yrs ago. All I want to know is who did Mona choose? Now I’ll be wondering if Joan’s crazy ass ever got married!!!!!!

  38. ljassi on February 14, 2008 at 7:47 pm #

BET Bring Girlfriends back with the full cast!

  39. Kimmie on February 14, 2008 at 9:09 pm #

I’m soooo disappointed…I loved that show…I still watched even after Jill left..We are constantly losing great african american shows…what’s the problem?

  40. Desiree on February 15, 2008 at 1:29 pm #

WTF!?!?! They could have at least let Joan get married! I’m so upset!

  41. Tam on February 15, 2008 at 5:07 pm #

We need to write letters like the fans of Jericho did to get the show back for a proper conclusion! This is some bullsh*t! Lets write!!!!!!

  42. Tam on February 15, 2008 at 6:52 pm #

I don’t think its true. I just went to the CW website and it said original episodes of Girlfriends will be airing on Sundays, along w/the Game, Everybody Hates Chris and Girlicious.

But just in case this is true, I’m going to write down these numbers posted up top cause my a** will be steaming mad if its canceled w/out an ending!!!!!!!

  43. Dre on February 17, 2008 at 8:34 pm #

Girlfriends was a great show! Even though this last year was a little slow, it should be given a proper ending. I’ve watched this show from the beginning. I set my DVR to replay them. They were going to bring Toni back. This is so unfair and hurtful. It should be given a series finale, at least.

  44. Karen on February 18, 2008 at 5:49 am #

This is so sad. If they did not want to renew the season the network should have at least given the fans the respect to give us a finale. Especially when we were forced not to watch new episodes as a result of the writing strike!! Is there any way another network can pick them up? :(

  45. Chanita on February 19, 2008 at 9:04 am #

I am terrible upset to hear they have cancelled the show. I was a faithful watcher even when Toni left the show. It is the only show that I make sure I am home for (Monday nights). I can’t believe that CW would not even have the decency to at least let the season play out. They have completely robbed these wonderful actors and writers of the priviledge of being the longest running sitcome. This show needs to picked up by another network and be permitted to finish their season. I mean dag, these actors received a phone call last Sunday (2/10) that it was cancelled. Does that make any sense??

  46. Arma and April on February 19, 2008 at 10:41 am #

My daughter and I have been watching that show since it’s conception. It was nice to be albe to discuss our intergenerational ideas about some of the issues the show dealt with early on; HIV, adultery, casual sex ect. We have missed “Toni” and were hoping she would return. We are disappointed that there no finale. Even the “Parkers” had a finale episode, what’s up with that? We will miss our Girl Friends.

  47. mary on February 19, 2008 at 10:51 am #

I am really upset that cw decided to cancel girlfriends. it really seems as though they want to loose all african american viewers. we are to biggest group of consumers, but yet we always get the short end of the stick. Let’s put our money where our mouth is!!! Let BOYCOTT CW!!!!! Hitting them in their pocket will hurt more than anything.

  48. Jackie on February 19, 2008 at 10:51 am #

We didn’t even get to see William and Monica’s baby…Toni’s return,Maya and Darnell adopting a baby, Joans crazy but getting married, Lyn finding the love of her life ( would have been nice if it ended with her getting engaged to Kadeem Hardison)The show deserved a great ending. As loyal viewers, we deserved better and I will be writing to CW, for what it worth, to express my feelings.

Are you kidding me? They cancel this wonderful show, but have nonsense like “Bullish and the geek, and that girlicious nonsense? What is wrong with these people. CW doesnt have any shows I like on it besides Girlfriends and the Game. I will not be the only one to leave that stupid channel alone!

I’m truly gonna miss this show! I loved it! I will say it did take a turn downward when Toni left. She was really a prime ingrediant on the show. REALLY GONNA MISS THOSE BEAUTIFUL LADIES!

  57. H harris on November 16, 2008 at 9:23 pm #

Thats what they do to all black shows it’s nothing new. All we see on T.V. is FRIENDS,SEINFIELD,DESPERATE,HOUSEWIVES,etc….. “Shows with the cast thats mostly black probably doesn’t bring in a lot ratings so they cancel them. I’m not going lie some black shows stereotype us and showing us acting like complete idiots.Until we own networks and have a audience its always going to be this way.”

  58. theshoppinglady on November 25, 2008 at 1:38 pm #

Hate that this show ended, wish it got picked up by another network. B Scott I enjoy your youtube broadcast and website. Keep up the great work!
