Diva Battle Round 1: Aretha vs. Tina Turner

February 12, 2008

aretha-vs-tinaturner.jpg

First Natalie Cole slammed the Grammy’s for awarding Amy Winehouse and now Aretha Franklin is pissed that the Grammy Writers for referring to Tina Turner as “the queen” during her performance with Beyonce. Here is what Aretha had to say.

“I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyoncé, however I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy. In addition to that, I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love to Beyoncé anyway.”

Did anyone ever sit Aretha down and let her know that she isn’t really a queen. That’s the problem with Hollywood, you start to believe the crap people tell you. I think sometimes it’s better to sit down quietly or else you end up looking dumb and insecure…and that includes Aretha. Besides I wouldn’t go picking fights with Tina Turner, anyway. She may be 68 but I have no doubt she could kick me all up and down the stage with minimal effort. We all saw what she did to Ike Turner in that limo scene from “What’s Love Got To Do With It”.

Thoughts?

Tina is as much of a queen as Aretha is, that’s something Aretha should grasp, yes she’s the queen but she’s not the queen of all the genres of music. What aretha did for gospel, soul, and r&b Tina Turner did for Rock & Roll and r&b…like the Queen of the North and Queen of the South

Please tell me this is a joke. Is she serious? Is she really arrogant enough to believe that someone would take time out of their day to think of a way to piss her off? Hasn’t Tina been referred to as the Queen of something or other before? Should we not refer to Elizabeth of England as the queen either? Miss Aretha, no ma’am. First of all she showed up wearing a set of curtains that she’s previously been seen in and then brings her own food (HOT DOGS) into the after party. I respect her legacy and all but she needs a big dose of STFU - real quick! I don’t necessarily agree with Natalie Cole either but at least I understand her point of view.

By the way B., I hear that 2 other blogs were shut down for posting the Mariah song. Please be careful…

  3. fatblkboy on February 12, 2008 at 4:16 pm #

ADDENDUM - obviously she’s delusional. She thinks Halle Berry is a perfect fit to portray her in her autobiography. Let me go somewhere and call down.

    Aretha IS the Queen!

  6. xclnt_choice on February 12, 2008 at 4:34 pm #

Aretha is the Queen of Soul and Tina is the Queen of Rock n Roll Soul….big difference other than weight.

  7. cjjada2001 on February 12, 2008 at 4:40 pm #

is she mad because bee didn’t name check her in the intro wit all the other divas? or maybe she mad cuz tina look better at 68 than she looked at 40. fat ass.

  8. devnel on February 12, 2008 at 4:42 pm #

Aretha better watch herself…she looked like a straight up manatee.

  9. KR on February 12, 2008 at 4:45 pm #

She is taking the term Diva literally. I can’t stand the arrogance.

  10. nOva on February 12, 2008 at 4:46 pm #

Does Beyonce even know who Aretha Franklin is? Just askin’…..

  11. levity on February 12, 2008 at 4:46 pm #

Aretha needs to get over herself. Beyonce was speaking from her perspective. To Beyonce, Tina is the queen since Tina abides in her performances.

  12. Tiffany on February 12, 2008 at 4:51 pm #

I was very mad at Nat Cole for saying that BS about Amy Winehouse not being a good example and Rihanna or Beyonce should’ve gotten it? PUHLEEZE! I love some B! But c’mon, her entire, NO ENTIRE CD was about her body, touching, bodying it, feeling it, grinding on it, etc…and Rihanna? The Dance CD? NO Way! A role model? B? Rihanna? Amy? No! However, it’s not the NAACP Awards for community involvement, it’s quality of music! Amy was classic! That cd was bound to win, her voice is amazing and her entire being is refreshing besides the smoking rocks! OK I’m done LOL!

  13. Tiffany on February 12, 2008 at 4:52 pm #

Oh and Aretha, you looked TERRIBLE HONEY!!! Ur straps were looking pretty feeble dear! Can we say new image or stylist and no bright ass colours?

  14. BeautifulBoy on February 12, 2008 at 4:57 pm #

I love Aretha but even more love Tina’s class. Tina wins this one. Because as soon as she was done with the Grammys she jumped on her private jet to perform at a private party in Russia… Why? Because that’s what Queens do. I am so glad that the QUEEN of ROCK n’ Roll - R&B & Soul had no comment for arsonist Aretha. Now you know Aretha is most famous for her song ‘Respect’ but watch Tina turn it out nearly forty years ago!

two different styles, they are both queens, CEASE THIS DRAMA!!!

  16. Bird on February 12, 2008 at 5:49 pm #

Aretha is commonly referred to as the Queen of Soul. Tina doesn’t have a title like that, but I don’t see what is wrong with B referring to as the queen. She didn’t call her the Queen of Soul or the Queen of Hip Hop and R&B (Mary). I don’t understand what Aretha’s problem is with it. Be just called her that queen.

  17. Marshall on February 12, 2008 at 5:59 pm #

    I agree with y’all!
    They are different queens!
Gospel and Rock… So much drama involved!

  18. Yo on February 12, 2008 at 6:43 pm #

Aretha is THE QUEEN of Soul.. you better ask somebody GROWN about it! RESPECT is what The QUEEN is talkn’ bout. Oh, by the way beautiful one.. what’s up with your canidate?
Your energy is sooooo much fun, I really enjoy your videos.

  19. seven2 on February 12, 2008 at 6:56 pm #

TWO Queens!! WELL WHAT’S HAPPENIN’ WITH THE ELECTION?!! ANYBODY KNOW?!!

  20. Keena on February 12, 2008 at 7:04 pm #

I can see why Aretha would get upset because when Beyonce said it I thought that same thing. Aretha is the queen of soul period. Don’t get me wrong, I think Tina is phenomenal as a matter of fact she completely outshined Beyonce on the stage to the point where I keep forgetting she was on there. But the fact is Aretha is the Queen of Soul, has been for over 40 years. That’s HERS!You don’t have to disrespect her, in order to give Tina props. They’re both ultimate divas but Aretha was right to check that and Beyonce should’ve known better.

Also, it’s not about thinking she is A QUEEN but she is undoubtly THE QUEEN. Give respect where respect is due. When you hear that name you know exactly who the person is talking about. She could’ve just as easily called Tina the ultimate diva or something else. But then again, that may be Diana Ross. Oh well, to bad the rock n roll community didn’t coin a name for her. Maybe she just thought she would borrow Aretha’s LOL.

  21. Keena on February 12, 2008 at 7:21 pm #

As for the election, Barack Obama is beating Hillary so bad I almost feel sorry for her, NOT. He swept the primaries this weekend and has already won 2 of the 3 primaries tonight. The third (Maryland) isn’t confirmed because the polls had to stay open late due to the weather. Right now, Hillary’s only hope is to win Texas and Ohio in March. If she loses either of them, she may have to throw in the towel. Also, her campaign team is in disarray. 2 of the key people have been replaced. At this stage of the game doesn’t look good. If she can’t run a campaign, how is she going to run a country? Anyway, we’ll have to wait until March before we’ll know for sure.

What’s funny, previously when asked if she’d consider being Obama’s VP she wouldn’t answer the question, but tonight she called him her friend. So maybe she’s making backup plans. She’s going to get back in that White House one way or the other. However, I really hope he doesn’t choose her. I can so see her running against him again and exploiting any inside knowledge she may have. She’s just that shady.

  22. Chance on February 12, 2008 at 7:21 pm #

Aretha is known as the Queen of Soul. Its been said many times. So to crown Tina during the Grammy was tacky.
I feel Aretha on this one.

  23. bee4real on February 12, 2008 at 7:31 pm #

I’m still waiting for a response from Aretha’s fashion stylist…then i will respond to what Aretha had to say….

  24. angelamaria1858 on February 12, 2008 at 7:37 pm #

Natlie Cole needs to remember that she was a druggie too!!

  25. HH on February 12, 2008 at 8:29 pm #

…Aretha needs to get on the Biggest Loser! She looks like she’s about to blow! Look out!

  26. HH on February 12, 2008 at 8:46 pm #

…Retha look she just grabbed some curtains and rolled up on stage…too much pork for one fork!

  27. junior on February 12, 2008 at 9:03 pm #

Natalia Cole and Aretha both need to shut up! Aretha you can sing…amazing singer but please dont let that go to your head! u are the queen of soul…but Tina is the Queen of Rock and Roll!

  28. Avisjay on February 13, 2008 at 2:33 am #

Given more attention than it should be, BUT, with Aretha’s Hit list against Tina’s, Aretha kills her several times over. Tina’s career is mostly 2 songs “Proud Mary” and “What’s Love got to do with it” (with “Private Dancer” as a back up). I have no room to write Aretha’s hit list!

But Aretha should of chilled and let Tina have her day.

  29. Tonya on February 13, 2008 at 4:24 am #

I love Tina and Aretha, but that night, TINA was the Queen, I wanna be like Tina when I am 68, her and Beyonces performance was the best perfomance of the night to me.

  30. Much2much41 on February 13, 2008 at 4:46 am #

Why doesn’t Aretha have fits about Mary being called Queen of HipHop/R&B? Is it only those SHE deems worthy of the title? Tina might be the Queen to BEYONCE, and that’s her right to feel that way. I’m sorry, but believing your own hype doesn’t make it true for everybody. Plus, in my opinion, Aretha lost her pipes years ago, so she needs to go somewhere and hit a treadmill and be glad people are still humoring her with the title AT ALL.

  31. Divab on February 13, 2008 at 6:55 am #

I dont think Aretha should have taken that to heart.
But last time I checked ARETHA IS STILL the QUEEN of R&B. Tina Turner.. never was!

  32. SexyBeautifulOne on February 13, 2008 at 8:40 am #

Personally, I don’t think the slip up was the fault of the writers.

Musically speaking, when someone says “The Queen!” they are usually referring to Aretha. She’s earned that title and deserves the R E S P E C T that goes along with it!

Don’t get me wrong, I love the hell out of Tina Turner but who really calls her the Queen of Rock and Roll?

  33. BeautifulBoy on February 13, 2008 at 10:17 am #

thanks for that link tina kicked ass on that aretha song definitely less pop than aretha’s version and dare we say soulful?

xclnt_choice, the perfect explanation, it was the same thing I was thinking, Aretha needs to stop it and leave miss Tina alone, Beyonce did nothing wrong

  35. Ms.NeeCee on February 13, 2008 at 2:09 pm #

I agree also. All of them know how to do there thing in there own different way. All that talent and money who gives a shi*. I think they are all divas, and if anyones ego should be bruised it should be Aretha’s for wearing those damn embelished parachutes! I am on the healthy side but that’s a bit too much for me. Keep it covered and classy! And if you are going to show some skin sweetie, keep it tight. Don’t have that mess flappin’ and swingin’. Lord have mercy! I’m sorry she needs to stop it though. There is a queen for each castle, trust there is enough room for all.

  36. Charisma on February 13, 2008 at 4:34 pm #

Did Aretha ever stop to think that the performance wasn’t about her?? Damn I think she did her ownself justice wearing that yellow ass dress looking like a big ass LEMON!!!!Aretha needs to be more worried about her health then somebody referring to someone else as QUEEN!! As I tell my friends in life “GIRL BYE!!!”

  37. Charisma on February 13, 2008 at 4:42 pm #

Natalie Cole got some damn nerve talking about Amy is not a good role model..trick you used to snort cocaine back in the day so who you are to judge! Amy is getting it together and it is her time to SHINE!!!

  38. thejuanstar on February 13, 2008 at 5:01 pm #

Aretha has and always will be the Queen of Soul. In the beginning of the Tina Turner’s intro, B did mention Aretha Franklin. Since Beyonce is young she didn’t see it as an insult to call Tina the Queen but trust me the writers did. B had nothing to do with what was written, she was just reading the teleprompter.

  43. Sell_ah_one on February 14, 2008 at 7:16 am #

Oh yeah and secondly I don’t know who Aretha’s stylist is but whomever it is hates her because everytime I see Aretha on T.V. she looks sloppily dressed. Her publicist and stylist should be fired.

  44. 1blackQT on February 14, 2008 at 10:35 am #

Aretha, Aretha, know who you are boo, and stop the mess! I mean seriously, does it really matter. Black women R-E-S-P-E-C-T each other, you’re all QUEENS!

  45. P.DELGADO on February 14, 2008 at 1:05 pm #

Divas are oparatic sopranos; not these self-centered, arrogant, over-hyped bimbos. If they don’t sing opera, stop calling them “divas!”

  46. BeautifulBoy on February 14, 2008 at 9:48 pm #

Oh I’ve been to many opera’s and I am a season ticket holder to the Met, and the Met has just as provocative operas with characters that dress and albeit act in away that some may deem inappropriate for the masses to see as some of these ladies outfits may suggest. Whether you agree with it or not, like opera, pop music is an art form as well. A way to express ones self through dance and song is a beautiful gift to people. These ladies in my mind do it very tastefully and teasingly. There is nothing over sexual about the performances but they are sexy! Be open minded P. Delgado

Tina is known for 2 songs? What a joke!
Tina Turner has had a lot of popular singles throughout her career. Especially in the 1980s.

    *Better Be Good
    *Back where you started
    *Thunderdome
    *Typical Male
*Let’s stay together, to name but a few and not forgetting the 1966 masterpiece River Deep. She obviously hasn’t had as many hits as Aretha. Not a lot of people have but she has an attractive list too and she’s way more popular than a lot of American singers the whole world through and Aretha won’t beat that record. I saw Tina twice here in South Africa and she’s exceptional…………
