Asia de Cuba: Revitalizing Fusion

The most intriguing thing about fusion food is that it brings together complete opposites that somehow manage to complement each other naturally. Asia de Cuba’s menu takes the flavors of Latin food with Asian cuisine to create various plates that open your mind and tingle your taste buds. Sweet and spicy, fruity and savory, crisp and creamy—these are just a few of the tastes and textures that make up the menu. A new world awaits…on your plate.

If atmosphere is a deciding factor when it comes to dining, then Asia de Cuba should be on your list for that reason alone. The vibrancy of the scene starkly contrasts with the colorful menu because the entire restaurant is lacking color. In fact, the interior is a monochromatic setting of bright white and creamy beiges designed by Philippe Starck. The outside patio with its lighted trellis, oversized terra cotta pots overflowing with trees and vines and views overlooking the city adds a splash of color to any outdoor dining or cocktails. The design is very much in line with the remainder of the Mondrian Hotel, which stands out from other Sunset hotels with its sleek, sophisticated interior. The restaurant is just a matching addition.

Serving breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner, Asia de Cuba dishes it out from early morning to late night. The prices may run high, but the presentation and quality of food make it worth the price. Breakfast, lunch and brunch are individually plated, but the dinner items are meant to be shared. Plates are served family-style, so everyone can fill their plate with whatever is on the table. The evening specialties include calamari salad with bananas and sesame orange dressing, spiced pork spare ribs with corn and avocado salad, hoisin roasted duck with papaya, cuban barbecue chicken with coconut sticky rice and the renowned miso cured butterfish, which is cured for at least four days and served with tempura shisito peppers. Several new menu items have been added including a coconut peppercorn sea bass, marinated rack of lamb and, for dessert, Mexican donuts with Cuban espresso. The dessert menu also boasts a mindblowing carrot cake with pineapples and rum, a rum flamed banana layer cake with dulce de leche ice cream and strawberry coconut sorbet with a spicy fruit dip in addition to a layered chocolate and coffee cake.

The cocktail menu is just as interesting if a night of beverages is on the agenda. A variety of mojitos—try the Portuguese Mojito—and mixed drinks are their specialty. The Mandarin Sunset is their newest concoction, and old favorites include the Mambo King, Gingerade and the Cuban Sunrise, but don’t feel limited to cocktails of only the sweet variety. They also offer a wide range of international wines and rums as well for any spirt connoisseur.

Most notably, the staff at Asia de Cuba stands out as one of the most serviceable crew in town. Never have we been treated with such “your wish is our demand” behavior in this city of angels. In a land where celebrity status speaks, it’s nice to know that you don’t have to be featured on TMZ.com daily to get what you deserve.

In our last edition of Work Your Weekend!, we mentioned the dineLA Restaurant Week event shaking up Los Angeles from January 27-February 1 and February 3-8. Asia de Cuba is a participating restaurant, and if you’re a bit overwhelmed by some of the menu’s higher prices, this is your time to go. The restaurant’s special three course prix fixe lunch menu for $22 (excluding beverages, tax and gratuity of course) has been created just for this event. This is the time to check out not only Asia de Cuba, but any other spots in the area that may strike your fancy. Go HERE for more information.

Take a trip from Asia to Cuba and beyond. Walk into the doors of the Mondrian Hotel and walk out with an international experience. It’s worth the trip.
