Why Nas?
December 28, 2007

As reported earlier this year, long time rapper, Nas next studio album is going to be titled Nigger! A potential album cover is surfacing on the Internet. Love muffins what are your thoughts? Has Nas taken it too far this time? Someone, PLEASE let me know!

Tonya Tunez on December 28, 2007 at 12:43 pm #
HATE IT! Is he trying to look like Malcolm X? Please say its not so. What point is Nas trying to prove? This is why other people don’t respect us as a race. We don’t even respect ourselves.
Ladyy on December 28, 2007 at 12:49 pm #
I think he’s taking freedom of artistic expression a little too far but maybe he’s trying to make a socially conscious statement that will reflect the musical content on this album.

I will have to say being a Southern African American Young Lady! It’s more a less a wake up call for Black America….Saying the word Nigger or Nigga hasn’t really been a big deal to the masses as long as it is dressed up in a good beat and some stupid lyrics…I think Nas Has hit us in the face…With the reality of it….I no longer say it…and Nigga was how i normally started all my sentences….It’s embarassing for us to want the world to pay us our due…when we do this to ourselves…and most black people say it a term of endearment….but why are so many of us are offended by it!

I must say that your ass is crazy B SCOTT….I just found out about you…..and guess what…you have been linked to my internationally known site!! And this NIGGER cover is on point and oh so Classic!!!
Assata on December 28, 2007 at 1:16 pm #
You know I’ve been thinking about Nas and this album quite a bit since it was announced. I am waiting for his official explanation.
I have been a Nas fan since the very first album. What I know is this: Nas has positioned himself as a thoughtful and political artist…he has a history of speaking on difficult subject matter.
I believe there has to be a reason, thought process behind his move to name this album “Nigger”….I doubt the decision was made out of ignorance…..rather a possible attempt to attract attention to a real issue(possibly the state of things in the black community).
What better way to garner attention…so that when you do speak on things your sentiments are heard!
Shak on December 28, 2007 at 1:19 pm #
Hopefully he took it far enough to the point where brothers and sisters will stop using the word as a form of greeting. I hope this really slaps some sense into people. I wish he didnt have to take it there, but I hope it works because we need to stop calling each other this word.
kori on December 28, 2007 at 1:24 pm #
This shit is OFFENSIVE and OVER THE FUCKING TOP. Just because he is a rapper does not give him the right to use the word “N*gger” and make money off of it. Does he know the meaning behind that word? I’m really pissed the fuck off. B Scott you need to make a video on this one! I’m a white male and this is even hard for me to look at. WHAT AN ASSHOLE!
Bird on December 28, 2007 at 1:28 pm #
While Nas is no intellectual genius, he does have social and cultural awareness. I’m assuming he is going to be responsible when it comes to this CD. Not to mention there have been several books written with the word Nigger in the title so he is really breaking new ground here.
Bird on December 28, 2007 at 1:29 pm #
I meant to say he isn’t breaking new ground.
MackMama on December 28, 2007 at 1:33 pm #
This is just a desperate publicity stunt. And it’s too bad he thinks he needs something like this for album sales. He shoulda just started beef with 50 or Jigga like er’body else!
Adeana on December 28, 2007 at 1:49 pm #
if you don’t know nas’ music or understand his message(s), then perhaps you would think this is a ploy for attention. nas is lyrically deep and i’m am willing to bet that the content of the album will be of a conscious nature. not party anthems, booty-shaking praises and foolishness of the like. and as someone else pointed out, there are books with the same EXACT title or similar and if you’ve READ THEM, you’d understand. please folks, stop crying foul before you even hear/read/understand the message. i will say kudos to nas for getting people’s attention…now let’s see how many will actually stayed tuned for the album. if you don’t, then don’t whine about the title.
Adeana on December 28, 2007 at 1:57 pm #
ASSATA, i second you!
Artemicon on December 28, 2007 at 2:19 pm #
his lyrics may be deep, but there are other titles he could have named the album that wouldn’t cause black people to be the center of negative attention again. You can’t compare a book or any other (classic) litterature to an album cover, especially in this day and age.
demisup on December 28, 2007 at 2:23 pm #
he’s a positive rapper i know he has a meaning behind this
JA on December 28, 2007 at 2:38 pm #
I just hope the lyrical content of this album is strong enough to back up such a powerful title. As a BLACK American, I think we have given this word so much power…TOO much power. We try to dress it up or dress it down to make it acceptable for our own use, while condemning others for using it. This word carries such a heavy history and I think it’s time it punches us in the face and makes us wake up as a society…and wise up as a black community. I HOPE that Nas does right by this album and makes his statement clear…and I hope that people listen. It will soon be 2008 and I hope that my young black community will wake up and get it together…will we continue to let this word define us, or will we turn around and define the word. The day my race stands up and proves that we are a race of creative, strong, intellectual, and powerful people…through ALL forms of media, I will be that NIGGER because we will prove that there is no word that can tear us down. Whatever anybody calls us will be positive because that is what we will show the world.
Ant on December 28, 2007 at 2:49 pm #
I said it over at OHNOTHEYDIDNT and I’ll say it here. I don’t think it is intended to be used offensive just as a word to describe what white society has made him and all black people.
ForeverCal on December 28, 2007 at 2:53 pm #
I say wait to hear what the album is talking about before you judge the title. I also say people put too much power behind that word, especially people who haven’t even been directly affected by the word. I can count on one hand how many people I know that have actually been called that word to their face. I think we should really focus on our continue growth as being respected as human beings then focused on a word that to me doesn’t carry any weight.
BLISS on December 28, 2007 at 3:54 pm #
oh my!
Nikki on December 28, 2007 at 4:58 pm #
I am sure Nas has a valid reason for naming his album the “N-Word”…Frankly I am tired of Black people being all offended when other people use it or its blatantly used by others when we call each other this word every day! Nothing has changed much in America for African Americans and we are too blind to see!
Wake the hell up and focus on how to improve the plight of the African American family and how to succeed in the capitalistic society. Don’t worry about Nas’ album title because I am positive he will explain once the CD comes out!
pinkladee3 on December 28, 2007 at 5:40 pm #
I honestly hate the word, but I am a huge fan of Nas. Nas is so intelligent and I know that he wouldn’t do this to disrespect his people. He probably has a great reason for naming his album the n-word, but I’m sure that songs on the album will explain it all.
I just found out about you B. Scott and I love you!!!
Lisa on December 28, 2007 at 6:08 pm #
It doesn’t bother me at all.
I love the cover.

He is being very bold
Brandon on December 28, 2007 at 6:43 pm #
I dont think that Nas is out of line for this. Im sick of these black people trying to ban black people from saying nigger, who gives a damn. Black people have turned the word around for their own good, its no longer a term of beratment but a term used to show friendship (that my nigga). We have taken a word usually used to down use and totally changed the meaning, why cant uppity black people understand that. I think a lot of black people are forgeting who they are and what they came from.
JA on December 28, 2007 at 7:52 pm #
I think it’s the young “that my nigga” generation that has forgotten who we are and where we come from. Our grandparents and great-grandparents dealt with a society that we would probably never be able to deal with, and all of their hard work to allow us equal opportunites for education, etc. is showing to be in vain. MY generation has not done right by our ancestors, and the ones running around toting “nigga this and nigga that” are the main ones feeding into society’s definition of “nigger”. We really need to grow up and wisen up. It’s not about uppity black people, sell-outs, uncle toms, or anything else…it’s about our race taking responsibility for the way society views us…the way we allow ourselves to be portrayed in the media. I’ll say it again, I support Nas in his use of the word for his album, I just hope he comes correct with it.
Adeana on December 28, 2007 at 9:24 pm #
well, i CAN and WILL compare literature and books to nas’ album cover because the word is the same damn word wherever it is. so because it’s a rapper on an album, he’s the single-handed downtrodden party responsible for black people being at the center of negative attention? so when patrick dillon, dick gregory and randal kennedy write (classic) LITERATURE, then it’s somehow more valid or less negative? that was still the title so WTF-ever!?!?! and just like he COULD have chosen a different title, so could others have…but they had a message. don’t like it? don’t buy the book. don’t like nas’ choice? don’t buy the cd. and black folks will prolly keep doing what they do regardless cuz how many folks have actually read the book “NIGGER”? but will be the first to cry out, fall on the floor, have a seizure cuz it was said
uh-huh, yeah right.
levity on December 29, 2007 at 12:38 am #
Obviously he’s trying to make a statement here. I don’t think I know what that statement is. I’m sure he did it to make people talk since he knew it would be controversial.
Andrea on December 29, 2007 at 2:07 am #
I’m scared! No for real if that busta has the audacity to name his CD Nigga and it turns out to be garbage. I’m scared…..For him!
Andrea on December 29, 2007 at 2:20 am #
I didn’t mean to call NAS a busta but if his CD turns out to be a flop then he is a busta. Yeah, I said busta, I’m old school.
ps. I love you B Scott!
mistybluema on December 29, 2007 at 1:26 pm #
It is obvious that NAS is igornant and have not read any African-American history books. If he knew his African-American history, he would not be using the “N” word. Just another dumb, stupid, ignorant rapper getting paid to be ignorant.

i would just like to say that anyone who isn’t a NaS fan wouldn’t understand why he would title his album as such. i feel really bad knowing that anyone who posted anything previously who was African American would think he would use this as a publicity stunt or to degrade us a a people in any way. NaS has already made an official statement about the subect:
The Queens rapper has responded to critics, and explained he initially wanted to use the title for his previous album, “Hip-Hop Is Dead.”
“I’m a street disciple; I’m talking to the streets,” Nas told MTV News.
“Stay out of our business. You ain’t got no business worrying about what the word ‘nigger’ is or acting like you know what my album is about without talking to me. Whether you in the NAACP or you Jesse Jackson. I respect all of them … I just want them to know. Never fall victim to Fox [News]. Never fall victim to the sh*t they do.”
“What they do is try to hurry up and get you on the phone and try to get you to talk about something you might know about yet. If Cornell West [activist and professor at Princeton University] was making an album called ‘Nigger,’ they would know he’s got something intellectual to say.”
“To think I’m gonna say something that’s not intellectual is calling me a ‘nigger,’ and to be called a ‘nigger’ by Jesse Jackson and the NAACP is counterproductive, counter-revolutionary.”
“We’re talking power from the word,” Nas added, explaining he wants to strip away its heavy connotation.
i will end by saying that its plain & simple just like NaS said himself: to think that he would name an album something so controversial & not have anything intelligent to say about it to back it up is just like slapping him in the face & calling him a “nigger”. hands down, NaS is one of the BEST most introspective, intelligent rappers of our time…hell, in history! do your research, take a listen to his last 2 albums (’steet’s disciple’ and ‘hip-hop is dead’). while people eat up the bullshit that 50 cent & all these other so-called ‘rappers’ put out, u take shots at someone who has mastered their craft and actually has a social message behind his art…saddens me.
