December 19, 2007 Cover Wars: “Hello It’s Me”

Morning Love Muffins, I haven’t done a “Cover Wars” piece in a while so I thought I’d give you another one. I was listening to some of the bonus tracks from Mary J. Blige’s new album and one of them was “Hello, It’s Me” which is one of my favorite songs. “Hello, It’s Me” was originally recorded in the 70s by the rocker Todd Rundgren but since then has had a soul make-over by some great artists. So listen to the following versions and tell me which one you prefer.

Amel Larrieux – Hello It’s Me

John Legend – Hello It’s Me

Mary J. Blige – Hello It’s Me

P.S. I always like to play homage to the orginal so here is Todd Rundgren singing one of his classics. (That makeup and hair was FIERCE!)

  • between those three its kind of hard…i would say ummm I dont know, Im going with the Isley brothers! They were the best. period.

  • wow…three great GREAT covers! If I had to rank it’d be:
    1. Amel
    2. John
    3. Mary

Hmmmm looks like the same order they were posted in…you agree love muffin’??? Though I heard Amel before I knew it was the Isley Brothers version (yikes!) so I already determined her’s was the best ;)

  • Amel, hands down!

  • I’d say that John’s version was the best, because he was just right. Amel’s was too soft and shy, while Mary’s was too soulful and didn’t sound like the original at all. John’s version had originality plus it still stayed true to the actual song.

  • I say Amel’s. Her voice is just so smoothed out. If I still smoked, I’d light an L, dim the lights and just chill-lax to this…

Next it would be Mary’s and then John.

  • come on man…how are you NOT going to put the isley bros version up here…if we are going to do cover wars let’s do it right…isley bros version is one of the best songs ever…

    but i do like amel’s voice…she’s beautiful

  • Isley Brothers

  • come on people i would have 2 say mary version was hott!!! it still made u know it was a remake but it was fresh and new. mary took this song and made it her own just like every other remake she do.

    john was just lame.

amel was 2 close 2 da original. if ur goin 2 sing it da same way and not own da song why do it over?
