September 25, 2007 Is Being Skinny Worth It?
Italian fashion brand Nolita’s new ad campaign features 27-year-old Isabelle Caro and are being displayed all over fashion week in Milan. Isabella weighs 641bs and has been suffering from anorexia since the age of 13. She has decided to appear naked in the campaign because she wants to show young people the dangers of anorexia.
“to use the naked body to show everyone the reality of this illness, caused in most cases by the stereotypes imposed by the world of fashion.”
Giorgio Armani has spoken out about the ad by saying: “Anorexia has reasons which are not linked to fashion. Even people who take no notice of fashion get anorexic.”
Well I was very shocked when I first saw the ad but I guess that’s the point right? I’m kinda torn about this one. What do you think love muffins?

To answer Armani’s statement yes the medical definition of anorexia has nothing to do with fashion, but in today’s age of oversaturated materialism fashion and the media contribute to the non-traditional cases of anorexia. This disease has begun to infiltrate sectors of the population through society’s interpretation of beauty, that otherwise would have never been exposed to the disease. So yes, fashion does play a part in today’s outbreak of the disease in all cultures.

Anorexia is bad and definitely seen in the world of fashion and in Hollywood but it does not seem to plague the vast majority of the population either here in the USA or in Italy. There are better messages we can send young people like giving up cars or smoking. How many anorexic people do you know versus people who ought to give up eating Big Macs? Exactly.

How did the world get so twisted that starving yourself to death was the way to become beautiful?
