September 5, 2007 Love Muffin Request: “Read A Book” Controversy

One of my love muffins, A’deana, wrote in with this message:

what are your thoughts on this “read a book” controversy? take a looky…………………….

Well I have the same problem with this as I did with Alexyss Tylor; which is being disrespectful and tacky in regards to sensitive issues even if some of your points are valid causes your voice to become MUTE! BET should be super duper ashamed for demeaning their own demographic! But I do agree that something should be done but not in this manner, BET has the power not to play these offensive/questionable videos that they are parodying in the “Read A Book” video. If they really wanted to address the issue they could!

  • Totally Unacceptable!!!!!!!!
    A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT!!!!!

But the director of the video Tyree Dillihay is kinda cute though…….. lol

B.E.T should be holding the sheet over their heads right about now!!!!!!

  • the message is totally valid in the music video. Now BET has to be accountable for the kinds of images that are being shown on their network, once everyone (parents, executive, family, community) knows the kind of racist, sexist images on that BET are showing, we must do something to change the direction which we are going in, which is one of the points the video is trying to make.

  • This is just ignorant! BET makes a mockery of black people with all their shows! MTV keep up the good work!

  • Uhhmmm. AbsolutRaine is ON POINT.
every time I turn on 106&Park I think “why is soulja boy alive? why is hurricane chris poluting my eyes?” etc… BET itself is disrespectful to the urban community (note: it is not as much a black issue now that hip hop is so widespread culturally)

    ANNNNDDDD hold up, Mario.
Are you serious? “MTV keep up the good work!”? Uhmm… do you see the trash shows they put out on the daily portraying white people as rich, silly sluts? it’s just as offensive as BET.

Much Music (up here in Canada) on the other hand is way flyer than BOTH BET and MTV. at least their media awareness video was decent, educated and clean.

  • I have to disagree with you on this one B…I love this song and its message. I often find that people who don’t like the message are the people who the message is directed to.

  • What has happened to BET I remember back in the days when they put on positive messages. They are really slacking every since this new lady has taken over. They really need to sit back and look at the messages they are sending to the younger generations. They have the new show WE GOT TO DO BETTER They really eed to follow there own advice!!!

  • This is utterly crazy! For the poster who said those offended are the ones who need it you are beyond stupid. If a MTV ran this type of commercial with meth addicts and rock music there would be an uproar. BET is a disgrace and I’m calling my cable company to complain and have it removed from my services.

  • With all of the things being said about the video no one is stopping to really think about what the song is saying. I am a young parent who is within the demographic that BET is claiming they are trying to reach and i must say that when i heard this song i laughed and said this is crazy. The reality of it all is that sesame street and school house rock does not interest our children anymore we have to appeal to what they are interested in now. I agree with the Dj take away the cussing and the video and you have a positive message and beat that children would listen to.

  • This is crazy. BET has gone way down from what it use to be. But you if you think about it, it’s not black owned anymore. Viacom which owns MTV and other various stations has taken it over and made the network into a disgrace.

  • @Kim, perhaps you are beyond stupid because you are missing the point of the song. I no longer subscribe to cable and BET, MTV and VH1 show no programming that I am remotely interested in. I don’t see how anyone who is even the slightest bit interested in positivity watches BET. BET has been setting the black race back since the late 90s and that’s REAL TALK. However, the message of the song is what needs to be heard…Also, this song has been around for a LONG time and the BET audience is the primary target of this song. People (especially black people) need to read a book, raise their kids, etc. etc. All these are messages in the song and they need to be heard. Maybe you don’t agree with the delivery but the message is on point. Only the truly stupid still judge books by their covers.
