August 3, 2007 New Music: Carrie Underwood

I’ve been known to get into a country groove every now and then. Wait a minute, I should clarify that statement. By “country” I really mean “pop/country”. You know the country music that sounds like light rock with a little fiddle or banjo added to the track. Let’s just say I’m more into Leanne Rimes and Faith Hill than Toby Keith. I think the reason why I’m drawn to some of the women of country music is because its one of the few music genres that requires its artist to really be able to sing. Country music, like gospel music and R&B (before it became pop), won’t let you slide by with some half-ass vocals (Britney, J. Lo, Cassie etc.). That’s part of the reason I dig people like Martina McBride, Natalie Maines (Dixie Chicks), and Wynonna Judd; those girls can blow.

Anyway, let’s get back to the matter at hand. Carrie Underwood is back after her 6x platimum debut Some Hearts. I really liked her first album (“Wasted” and “Before He Cheats” were my jams). Her new single “So Small” has a great message but I don’t know if it has the catchiness that some of her other singles have had. Usually people tend to stay away from songs with uplifting or motivating messages but “Jesus Take The Wheel” proved to be a big hit for her so we’ll just have to see. After Kelly Clarkson’s album blunder, Ms. Underwood is now the #1 priority at the Sony BMG/RCA label and I’m sure Clive Davis will make sure her promotion reflects her value to the company. Enjoy love muffins.

Carrie Underwood – So Small

“Cause sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing is just a grain of sand
What you’ve been out there searching for forever is in your hand
When you figure out love is all that matters after all
It sure makes everything else seem so small”
