July 13, 2007 XANADU: A Roller-Skating Good Time

The Broadway premiere of XANADU was this past Tuesday night and it was phenomenal! If you are not familiar with the film on which it’s based, it starred Olivia Newton John and Gene Kelly and was an enormous flop. However, the play pokes fun at itself (and the movie) and got great laughs from the audience—including Ms. John herself!

If you live in New York or are planning a trip there, make sure and buy tickets for this show. Kerry Butler stars as the sexy and hilarious muse, Clio, who poses as a human, Kira, to inspire uninspired artist Sonny Malone (Cheyenne Jackson). Her two jealous sisters Melpomene (Mary Testa) and Caliope (Jackie Hoffman) plot to cast a spell on her and Sonny to make them fall in love. When they do, Clio gets in trouble with her daddy, Zeus (Tony Roberts—he also plays Danny). But lucky for her, she was wearing leg warmers, so her ankles (gods and demi-gods weak spot) and her love is true love, not a spell. The comedy is priceless and the songs are catchy to boot.

James Carpinello was supposed to play the hunky Sonny Malone but, after he had a skating accident that left his ankle and leg fractured in three places, F.B.D Cheyenne Jackson took over.
